rod and reel advice needed
Submitted by papasmurf on Wed, 2008-10-01 13:31hey guys,
im looking at getting a new outfit for flicking soft plastics and lightly weighted baits in 20-40m of water. i will be using it to target pink snapper, harlies, baldies, etc. i was thinking of maybe a Penn Slammer 560L. has anyone had any experience with this reel? also, what rod would go well with it? im looking for something that has enough grunt to pull a demersal out of its cave but also have enough feel to cast soft plastics. i would probably spool it with 15-20kg braid.
thanks in advance.

Kayaker lucky to be alive
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2008-10-01 12:01Courtesy of the ABC
Police say a 48-year-old man is lucky to be alive after being swept away from Rottnest Island in a kayak.
They say the man, from West Leederville, left the main jetty at Thomsons Bay at 1.00pm yesterday to paddle to Longreach Bay.
When he failed to return his wife raised the alarm sparking a search involving police, water police, marine rangers, boats and a helicopter.
Police say the man was located at Floreat Beach in Perth, by a member of the public, suffering from hypothermia and cramps.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Police believe a combination of his large, heavy kayak and strong south-west winds combined with a large swell pushed him towards Perth.
They say he was lucky he was blown to the mainland and not out to sea.
Water Police say the incident is a timely reminder of the importance of informing family and authorities about journeys at sea.

New fishing rules
Submitted by Blackbetty-50 on Tue, 2008-09-30 13:32I've just received an e-mail saying Norman More is going to ignore the promise Colin Barnett and Troy Buswell made in the last few weeks of the election about doing a review of this policy before it was implemented. The e-mail said our new Fisheries minister was going to sign off on the Labour party's new rules without any changes for the Recreational fisher people, this stinks, actually it smells just like labour. It looks like another load of lies from these wankers, once a polly always a liar.

Fish finder - advice needed
Submitted by tango and cash on Tue, 2008-09-30 13:01I am looking at buying a fish finder and have found a couple of Hummingbird Pirahna Max units at a good price.
There are two models available, the 210 and the 215. They are both the same price so I was wondering if anyone owned one and could let me know what they think and what the difference is as I can't see much??
Cheers

Furuno or Lowrance, What to buy
Submitted by Justin Poole on Mon, 2008-09-29 21:02HI
I am in dire need of a 1kw sounder for fishing deep the furuno 585 or lowrance LCX 27 that is where i am at, both have a bit of sex apeal.
a 585 furuno is the first option although for similar dollars the LCX 27 or 37 comes with a plotter and my nave man ploter does not hace the same coverage using C map as the navionics card.

Tagged Pinky Recapture
Submitted by Andy Mac on Mon, 2008-09-29 19:53Had the interesting experience of re-capturing a fish on Saturday that I had tagged with Tim back in November last year. A little Pinky opf 43cm, had grown 2cm in that time and moved about 2nm west.
I didn't realise it was a tagged fish until I had it in the esky. The tag was well and truly covered in slime and was on the other side of the fish as we landed it. Will be giving the guys at fisheries a ring in the morning.
Has anyone else recaptured their own tagged fish as yet?
Just waiting for the 70 odd cm Dhuie I tagged the same day to show up again in a few years, once its had a chance to put on a few extra kilo's.

Sambos in the swan
Submitted by flangies on Mon, 2008-09-29 18:30Hey all went fishing today with original teenage, was at e shed when nothing was really going on so we left to go to that bridge just round the corner, the one with the really fast current. Dunno what its called but it goes under all the trafic. Anyway, when we were walking along the bridge we looked down into the water and wtf! sambos?! no shorter than a meter long, tried everything but it just turned its nose at us. Squid,Mulie, Lures, Plastics, wasnt interested in a thing! then we noticed another 3 more just cruising around the shallows of the bridge. Got photos here in my mobile but cant find my cord to the computer, original teenage has some photos that he could post.
Beautiful fish just to watch cruise around effortlesly in the shallows, tried to hook up to one for a bit of a pull but they didnt want to play ball.
Oh well didnt catch a thing or i woulda tried a livie infront of it, still a good day out just to see one at the river mouth.

Custom made Sea Anchor, took me a while!
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2008-09-29 13:50Over the years of bottom bouncing i've never been really happy with the sea anchors i've used. I tried the cheap tarp material type, the parachute material type and the very expense ones also with average performance. Some didn't last long and well some just didn't work well. This recently has changed when i told my sea anchor supplier that i'm still not happy with what i've been using so he came up with a suggestion.
He said "how about i make up one that is made of strong material, opens up all the time, slows the boat down just nicely and you test it out and let me know your thoughts".... that sounds sweet i said!
I've been using this prototype/sample for sometime now (in all conditions) and i'm completely impressed with it. It opens up all the time, slows my boat speed down and isn't a big bulky thing. I gave him the nod and he's now made them up for me to sell.
They're suitable for 6-10 metre boats, has two swivels, a dump/retrieve cord and a carry bag. They normally sell for $199 but i'm doing a " limited special " Only $149 but whilst stocks last. I can get more but they'll be at the normal price however. If your in the market for one or you've had issues like i've had then check them out!
PM me for any more enquiries!
Cheers
Ryan

Saturday Mako
Submitted by Simon C on Sun, 2008-09-28 08:29Showed either my complete lack of picking weather, or tragic addiction to fishing and put in at Hillaries at 5.30 saturday morning. Afters shortening my spine by a few inches arrived west of rotto to chase some Kingies and ambers 2 hours later. Nothing much exciting to report on the fishing front, but for the first ten minutes we had about a 12ft mako going nuts 50m from the boat launching up in the air obviously chasing bait - was impressive to say the least.
