my recent new boat has a furnuo 600L sounder which I'm having difficulty setting up/reading, it appears to be reading the depth/bottom ok but does not apper to pick up schools/fish, I have adjusted/set bottom lock etc to no avail I know its not showing anything as a huge ray went under the boat and although the fish alarm goes off there is no indication on the screen of the ray also the pic attached displays a lost of rubish and there is only a small distance on sounder from the top to the bottom of the screen, does anyone have this sounder that can shed some light on what I'm doing wrong? I've looked at the demo and this sounder look like it has great capability.....

just wondering what everyones predictions are for pelagics in metro waters this season.

i am chasing my first YFT and spaniard from perth waters.

noticed while on the boat last trip out , the temp was registering at nearly 23 degrees out in the 30's. hopefully a good sign.

just need to sort out a good spread of lures as will be running 3 rods , and get a couple of teasers to up the chances.  can't wait.

plan so far is to troll the south/west side of rotto early morning around the drop offs , keeping an eye on bait balls and birds .

nice hot sunny day, decided to take the kids out from woodys to get some squid and hopefully some KG then end up at canarc for a swim and a couple of beers,,,,,,,sounds great, lets goooo.

2 klms out from woodys i here a strange noise comming from my 200 yammy 2st,,, what the,,,, then she locked up,,,,,,,,,,, she has sized, no warning whatsoever. Yes before anyone ask, my temp/oil alarms do work and the mator was cold. i think it has spun a big end bearing.

one good point, while at anchor waiting to be rescued we had a fish, 15-20 baby snapper all returned good except for 1 that floated away, swallowed the hook a bit to deep.

G'day fellas, where would be a good place to drop some crabs pots this evening?

So we were out scooping for crabs down in mandurah a couple weeks back and in our travels we came across a large sand whiting, floating along without a tail, but still alive! What the!?!? A quick scan around with the light didn't reveal any large predators so we were pretty clueless as to what could have taken its tail off. Any ideas? I would have thought that if it was a shark or mulloway they wouldn't have left anything to float away alive. Could a crab have chopped its tail off? Maybe it was attacked by the hordes of blowies that were around... poor little guy.

Most of us know it comes into effect in March. It is also common knowledge that although only one "FBL" is required to be on the vessel, only one individual bag limit can be taken per licence. So, for example, three fishers + 1 licence = 1 snapper and 1 dhufish.

My question is, how many times have you and your mates, over a cold one, have suddenly decided to go fishing the next day, but you've only got the one "FBL"? Post office/fisheries is closed, and yes, it is quite possible that not everyone has access to a PC/Internet/Credit Card in order to obtain a licence online.

Would it be possible for the skipper to buy 3 or 4 "FBL's" in his/her name so therefore anyone who comes out on the boat "spur of the moment" is covered? Obviously reimbursement for bait/fuel/etc could also be made to cover the extra cost.

I was in a fisheries office the other day and meant to ask then but forgot so I thought I'd run it past you mob and see if anyone's got to the bottom of this.

the past few weekends ive been lucky enough to go fishing in my boat with friends and family. In particular my grandfather was over from brisbane for christmas. For years as a child i tagged along fishing with him as offen as possible  so i finally returned the favour and took him out. He is 85 now and is showing it. He was always laughing, joking, quick and witty, and to see him now hes a shadow of his former self. We also had my sisters boyfirend from scotland (over for a 2 week holiday) and i really wanted to sell perth and our lifestyle so theyd move to perth. I had gathered the troops at Mindarie marina by 6am. The weather was great36C and by the end of the day it was a pond . After an hour of travel we finally reached our destination at Direction bank. It was the first good weather day since the closure reopened so i had gut feeling all the fish would be ready to fire. Ok first drift and my scottish friend hooks up for 20mins, but hooks pulled, probably sambo. second drift he hooks up again and after a short fight he had a 5kg balchin. 3rd drift i pull up a baldie 3kg, 4th drift my grandfather pulls a Queen snapper, ok size. After no action we head to another spot and after pulling up bits and pieces my grandfather hooks up big time. keeping in mind he is struggling with the heat, could not get out of his chair (balance issues) also fishing the lightest Daiwa  saltist 20 and a 8kg silstar rod 20lb braid. After fighting the fish for 30mins he pulls up a 10kg dhuie. I couldnt believe my eyes, i didnt know he had it in him. he was so week after i had to help him hold the fish up for the photo. Its a day ill never forget. After getting close to our limit i decide to head in. On the way in i noticed birds working. no one else was around so i decided to have a closer look. Ive never seen a bait ball in perth but there is a first for everything. as i got closer i noticed Tuna working and within 2 mins i was with my 70grm metal slice rod in hand guiding my deckie turn driver. First cast and staight into the action,,,reel screaming.  Got the fish on board and it was a 5-6kg longtail tuna. i had my fun now the scotish guys turn. Gave him quick instructions on how to cast and how to work the lure....bang he hooked up.. all on board had a go and when the reel screams like that you cant help but laugh and smile. I was going to head in but my grandpar said whens my go. Not long after i handed him the rod he had a tuna on. i couldnt believe he got it in but he did. we released all the tuna but we could have chased them all day. at times the tuna would be under  the boat and there were thousands. ive never seen anything like it in perth. Can you eat longtail tuna?

coming back in i realised i couldnt have scripted a better day. I might not ever see grandad ever again but these memories will be with me for life.

so heres the proof about the tuna, the pics arent too crash hot because its done with a camera phone. Also there are some random photos taken during december. Check out the double header breaksea cod, big one was 55cms, caught in 87mtrs.

Where is the best place to catch kg whiting and best bait.  Im talking land based around rockingham. This is what i use a paternoster rig with one really tiny hook on top and a long shank hook on bottom and bait just prawn or fresh squid and the spot just near point peron but there all to small - any help on places to go guy?

Ever since recieving a back injury I cant cast anywhere near as far as I could before the injury.

Ive been told the Breakaway Impact clips are good for a bit more distance.

Whilst searching online for the Imp clips I found another casting aid from the same people,the Breakaway Cannon or Bionic finger.

Anybody use either of the products and do they help as they claim too???

Planning on putting 50 pound braid on my shimano Tyrnos 30. Want to put loads on for deep, deep sea fishing. Usually use fireline but I'm sure there are other brands out there. Am looking for a quality braid at a reasonable price.

Any suggestions on what sort and what it might be worth? Also where I can pick it up?

I dont think anyone will be fishing in Exxy today. Bloody hot when we left at 7.30. Temp up to 48.4 C and I feel for all those in Exxy, because I am sure that shatters all previous records, at least since 1977.

just wondering whats the best way to defrost baits such as mulies + pilchards + whitebait ????

i've just recently went up north, travelled outta carnarvon to red bluff and tragically my bait went to shit. bought a 2.5kg bag of pilchards from caltex, n put them in the esky with ice straight away. 1hr and a 1/2 later i finally reached red bluff. went down to the beach, put the whole bag in a bucket filled with salt water. 5-10 minutes later went to grab a pilchard to put on the gangs n it fell apart in my hands. so any tips so this doesnt happen again ?

I'm going to to Woodmans Pt on Monday night. Trying to catch a stingray or something big. What rig do I use? I've got a 12" Surf rod with 25lb mono on it. Just need to to know what sort of hook/sinker rigs needed.

hi im new to fishing in perth (from bathurst) i have bought nyself a basic 12 foot surf rod and have been up to lancelin and caught some nice tailor and herring .went to iluka foreshore the other night just for some fun and ended up landing a 10kg 1.1m wobbygong on a tailor rig  any spots around perth super good at the moment or are they all fairly decent?when and where do the salmon start?

ive noticed a lot of talk and critiscisim of ppl keeping sambos, as most ppl think they taste like sh#t.

Samson fish are prone to having a perasite in their flesh (kidoa). this perasite is not something you can see when filleting. (not this particular perasite anyways. which is reasponsible for the bad taste/texture)

some fish have the perasite and some dont. from my expierience fish under 10 kg have a 50/50(+ or -) chance of having it and as the fish get bigger,it is more likly to have it. i would say that fish over 20kg are highly likly to have this perasite.

the perasite makes the flesh of the fish go mushy texture.. once cooked (the enzymes released by the paracite brake down the protein i.e. flesh). only after cooking the fish can you conclude it has it..often ppl would say that its bad eating and in the particular case of a fish with a perasite i tend to agree.

 Having said that fish that dont have the perasite cook up really well, by that i mean really good texture and flavour and when bread crumbed and deep fried very similar to dhufish and pinks. (others may disagree however i can gurantee a fish without this perasite taste a thousand times better then one with the perasite). we have caught a 21kg sambo that didnt have it, so it is possible however unlikly. i tend to think sambos around the 8kg mark are worthy of keeping as a lot of em cook up well (really well).

We try and release all the sambos 10kg plus, however if they not swimming backdown may aswell cook them and hope they dont have the perasite. and as for spearing i must be honest i will shoot a sambo of 20kg BUT ONLY when our freezer is empty and im not catchn anything else. (every sambo we ever speared seemd to be good, im not sure if thats luck, or due to the area and depth the fish where shot)

To conclude Sambos can be very good eating fish, i reckon a fish with no perasite and cooked properly is a 8-9/10. having said that with really big sambos the odds of coming across a good one arnt very high. I totally agree with giving people shit if they catch sambos for competition purposes only to put them in the bin later without even cooking them. However aslong as fishing rules are obided by and commen sense is applied and the intention of eating the fish is there, then those people shud not cop shit for keeping sambos.

Anyone know of any choppers being caught in the swan lately? Was thinking of chucking some baits or slices around sunday avo with a couple of beers from the boat.

My 1st BARRA. Got it up in a Pilbra Creek on Monday evening on a dead mullet. It measured 85cms. Was a case of 3rd time lucky as the 1st two smashed me into THE SNAGS. All three jumped when hooked OH what a feeling.

CAnt wait ti get into some more BARRA ACTION.
