Not just whales
Submitted by Big Frank on Sun, 2006-03-05 08:32Apart from slaughtering whales in the name of scientific research, Japanese fishermen admit that they took 1500 tonnes of illegal southern bluefin tuna in addition to their allowed 6000 tonnes last year and expect the illegal figure to rise furthur this year (Sunday Times, 5 March, page20).
While the governemnt has promised to be more protective of our coastline against subsistence Indonesian fishermen who risk their lives in crappy (but getting better) boats to feed thier families, why do the authorities seemingly do nothing against modern boats fishing for profit?

Livey Brews!
Submitted by SHizz on Sat, 2006-03-04 16:38After buying a new pump to put on a bucket as a livey one i saw that article in wangler the other week and decided that my old home brew kit is perfect!
Screwed a clip on the side of it , mounted the pump - Might put velcro on tho as its easier to to take off.
Went to city farmers and bought an extra aerator stone and a splitter. Joined it all up and voila!
Good thing is i can tell the water temp, and the tap means its easier to drain the water out at the end. The 2 aerator stones seem to keep the fish pretty healthy too.
Edit - Tryin to post a picture but server isnt workin properlly (Adam....!):P

Sustainable Fishing
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-03-03 13:12What is sustainable fishing? How are we able to maintain a balance in a marine environment which is encountering increased pressure from a water orientated populace. It seems the Governments answer is to bring in Marine Parks and restricted fishing areas all the way along the Western Australian coastline. The problem seems to be that there is a great divide amongst the fishing community as to how to move foward and ensure we don't over fish our resource. Several mentalities of fishermen I have identified are:
Catch and Release (don't eat them at all)
Catch enough for a feed (release what you don't need)
Fish for the freezer (take what you can)
These are sub components of the main fishing bodies, recreationals and professionals.
When there are opponents to fishing, such as the greens and calm, it is extremely important for us as individuals to pool together to protect our rights as fishermen. I don't necessarily disagree with the idea's of marine parks, but want to know more about the process that they use to decide which area's should be closed and how they measure the success of that specific area being repopulated from being a no fishing zone. I have heard talk about a tag lottery system for category 1 demersels and am worried about how this will impact on fishing for our kids or fishing in general.
How the government deals with the increasing pressure on fish stocks will be very interesting. I do believe that areas such as the Cockburn Snapper Spawn, Rottnest Samsonfish Aggregation or areas which are known to be fish spawning grounds should be protected. These area's need to be regulated to ensure the generations of fish aren't wiped out by greedy fisherman looking to fill their freezer or by the guys that are making big $$$ out of killing fish.
So how do we go about protecting the fish? And how can we do it when there are so many vested interest groups. I want to be able to catch fish, put some back, keep a couple for dinner every now and then and ensure that my kids, and then their kids will still be able to go for a fish in the future. I don't want the next generation blaming us for wiping out so many species of fish as a result of greed or in some cases, neglecting to realise the impact we (commercials and rec's) have on the system.

FFR
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-03-03 10:01There was a lot of talk when FWA created the Friday Fishing Report (FFR), well, news through the grapevine is that its no longer. No more bikini clad babes holding rods anymore, bit of a shame, can't say I bought one but the content looked ok. Other news is it looks like series 7 is also up for some change, bring on the new FWA.

Hello from your newest member
Submitted by Kasey L. on Thu, 2006-03-02 19:10Hello all,
I've just signed up, and as my first post, I thought I'd share a bit of the collection of photos I have at home (some of you may have already seen a few of them).
As the samsonfish aggregation season is pretty much over (I'd still go out and fish for them, but probably not on a charter at this time of year), I thought I'd share my joy of experiencing the season that was (05-06).
My only regret is that I failed to break the 100lb mark.
THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!!!
[img_assist|fid=16146|thumb=1|alt=6 and 7kg skippy]
Anyway, at the start, there were many welcome non-samsonfish catches. Large 6-8kg Skipjack Trevally were fun to warm up on.
And I'd still trade in 8 Samsonfish for 1 Amberjack (quality not quantity ;))
although they were not the easiest fish to find.
[img_assist|fid=16140|thumb=1|alt=aj and herring]
Here's a funny little picture I took just before a barbeque of an amberjack with a herring :)
[img_assist|fid=16167|thumb=1|alt=smith under load]
And my 2 months away from Perth were not spent in vain, however, money to pay for tackle most certainly was.
[img_assist|fid=16164|thumb=1|alt=on deanos boat]
Anyway, this was what it was all about.
See ya out on the water!

Your Pride and Joy
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2006-02-28 12:53Wondering what rod/reel combo is your favourite, the one that gets that extra little bit of attention over the others. Landed that extra special fish or just stood the test of time.
Mine would have to be my little ambassador 6500c4 matched with an abu morrum 6kg stick. It has landed some fish that I though were going to destroy me and has to come with wherever I go. Got a special combo that is your pride and joy?

Your favourite lure
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2006-02-23 14:26Just wondering what everyone's favourite lure is, be it for bream, trolling for big stuff, poppers etc.. The one that's caught that fish of a lifetime or one that you think will in the future..
Mine would have to be the jnr tornado lures or hockzheads - favourites would have to be the ones with the little metal heads and brightly coloured skirts.
Whats yours?

Bait schools
Submitted by looking4mulloway on Wed, 2006-02-22 11:33Hey all well yesterday i went out with Flywest out from Mandurah
We put ALOT of time in to trying for mac's only managed to hook a few tuna which were lost right beside the boat :(. There was alot of smaller baitfish schools out wide but not many birds working them to point us in the right direction. It seems the birds must have found a better feed elsewhere. Well on the way back thru the cut on the south side was the biggest school of baitfish i have ever seen. Was truely amazing 11m deep water was just full wall to wall of little whitebait we saw sharks and dol[phines holding them in the shallows and would you believe about 5-8 kids on boogie boards were swimming in the middle of this bait school. They must have thought it was weed or something, would have thought the amount of birds diving would have said to them maybe we should get out. Will be listening closely to see if any limbs were lost yesterday down here lol
Thanx Flywest for a great day will have to do it again soon

Weekend's Fishing - 18th-19th Feb
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-02-17 11:31Friday until midnight: S/SE winds 10/15 knots tending S/SW 15/20 knots by noon and increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots during the afternoon. Seas 1.0m rising to 2.0m. Swell 1.8m, easing.
Swell at Cottesloe: 0.6m easing.
Winds on Melville Water: Similar.
Saturday: S/SE winds 15/20 knots shifting S/SW 18/23 knots by midday and increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots during the afternoon. Seas 1.5m to 2.0m. Swell 1.0m rising to 3.0m by the evening.
Sunday: E/SE winds 15/20 knots grading to 20/25 knots offshore. No seabreeze expected.
Weather isn't predicted to be too special this weekend. But reading today's forecast they have that well and truly wrong. The river and ocean were an absolute millpond this morning and they predicted 15 knots or more which still hasn't blown in. Might be worth sticking in close on Sunday on the 3 mile to try and find some of Shizz's sambo schools or give some trolling lures a bit of a workout. Just hope they have the forecast wrong again for Sunday, especially as it is going to be a really hot day. I would expect it to be a nice one, here's hoping.
Let us know if you manage to get out and amongst them.

Volunteer Sea Rescue Groups
Submitted by Big Frank on Fri, 2006-02-17 08:29I spent 2 weeks at Rottnest around Christmas and had the 27 meg radio on whenever I was out fishing. I heard 7 seperate calls for assistance made to Volunteer Sea Resuce from people who had broken down, run out of fuel or other similar problems. Of these seven callers, only two were members of a Sea Rescue organisation. The other 5 knew the call signs to use to ask for help but were only able to give a Dep. of Transport rego number to identify themselves as they were not members.
Membership costs $35 per year which is not much to pay for your safety. I bet the guys drifting around Gage Roads in rising swell without power would happily have paid their subscription at that time.
Come on boaties - the sea rescue groups are volunteers and underfunded by the government which is why they conduct raffles in shopping centres to raise needed funds to save other peoples lives. Pay your way.

Weekend Fishing - 4-5th of Feb
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-02-03 11:44Forecasts:
Friday until midnight: S/SW winds 15/20 knots increasing to 18/23 knots late afternoon and evening. Seas to 1.5m. Swell to 1.0m.
Swell at Cottesloe: to 0.4m.
Winds on Melville Water: Similar, although up to 5 knots lighter late afternoon and evening.
Saturday: E/NE winds 10/15 knots becoming S/SW 10/15 knots early afternoon and reaching 15/20 knots late afternoon and evening. Seas to 1.5m. Swell to 1.5m.
Sunday: S/SE winds 15/20 knots increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots during the afternoon.
Looks like Saturday is going to be the day. It has been magic for the last 3 days with nearly no wind in the morning and it coming in around 10am. Today it came in a little earlier around 7.30, but was very weak and would have been great to be out on the water.
Need to make a few decisions about what sort of fishing to do tomorrow, some want more sambo jigging and to explore for spots, some want to head to the grounds short of and around Direction Bank as it's been quite a while since we've been bottom bouncing and caught a decent feed. So much to do, one way or another I just want to get out there fishing. If you manage to get out, let us know how you go.

Weekend Fishing - Sat/Sun 28/29th Jan
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-01-27 16:12Saturday: S/SE winds 20/25 knots increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots in the afternoon and reaching 25/35 knots offshore. Seas to 2.0m reaching 3.0m offshore. Swell 1.0m.
Sunday: S/SE winds 20/30 knots increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots in the afternoon and reaching 25/35 knots offshore.
With those winds I dont think Saturday is going to be any good. Pretty average on Sunday too. Maybe crabbing might have to be the go again this weekend if its going to be pretty blowy. Its been quite a while since we've been able out fishing, hopefully Sunday won't be as bad as forecasted and we might be able to get out for a few hours and catch a few from the inclose spots. :)

Weekends fishing - 14-15th January
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2006-01-12 09:41Looks like Sunday is the day to go fishing.. Medium south easterlies early dying by lunchtime with a late weak seabreeze.. Thats my prediction from a mid-week standpoint..
Not sure what sort of fishing we are planning to do, the sambo's have been great fun, but it might be time to target something else... Fads are a maybe, or a bottom bounce out on direction.. So many possibilities, what to do, what to do...
Motorvation is also this weekend, prob going down saturday night, will try and get some footage for all you rev-heads out there..
Getting down to Mandurah for a crab is definately on the cards too, been some great reports of big bluies coming out of there lately.. and with this bit of rain we are having, won't be long before they start sizing up and filling out..

Leader Preferences
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2005-12-19 17:05Just wondering what your preference of leader is..?
I tried some 100 pound Jinkai on the weekend for my snelled rigs and ended up snapping 3 out of the 7 rigs i made by testing their strength.. Without exerting lots of pressure i found that they snapped half way between the swivel and the hook, has anyone else had this?
I have been told that Jinkai is only really game leader, but I'm even questioning this after witnessing the line break on several different rigs..
Has anyone got a leader that they think leaves the rest for dead? considering the price you pay as well..
