Taking the boat Augusta

Hey guys,

Heading to Augusta soon, and with the rains this week looks like an awesome time fish.

**Looking for some suggestions for how to structure the day on the water?**

The primary goal is to catch a mulloway.

My thoughts are...

Fish the morning for Bream, mid-day for whiting and bread and butter fish and fish the sunset for tailor..

And finally anchor up near the mouth or narrow river sections for mulloway!

What fish would you target? And at what times of the day? River mouth, up stream?

cheers

Squid in Mandurah

 Hi

Have 4 nights mid June in Port Bouvard Marina. Taking a small ali boat and hoping to catch some squid. Can anyone advise if there are weed banks banks out from the cut that could produce squid. Happy to also try for whiting and KG's if there are any in this area. I guess there wont be much chance of crabs at this time of the year.

Thanks for any suggestions

Cheers

Furuno 587

 Hey guys,

got a furuno 587 and it has been a pain to turn on lately / sometimes dosent power up without removing and reinserting power cord. Have noticed a bit of corrosion on the head unit terminals, have sprayed them with contact cleaner but it still continues to be a problem. Anyone had this issue with sounders before? I was thinking maybe getting a small wire brush to scrub them but it's arkward to get in there.

Minn Kota 55lb battery usage?

 Hey all

Bit of a curly question which I know has a lot of variables involved, but Ive bought a 2nd smaller boat and it has a minn kota fitted and Im wondering how long the battery will actually last using the spot lock (will mainly be using that feature to hold on deeper spots etc as its too small and I cant be bothered with a electric winch at this point!)

Stats:

Hull: 5.35 Sea jay centre console with a 100hp Honda

Elec motor: Minn Kota 55lb

Current battery: 100ah AGM (not connected to motor or solar for charging at this point)

I will only ever be getting to the spots I have in mind in good/ fair weather so dont anticipate too much swell/ current for it to have to work overly hard

Guess the question Im asking is how long realistically should I expect the current battery to last on spot lock? I do have a couple of larger batteries I can plug into it but hoping to avoid that if neccisary due to the nice and tidy battery boxes and set up of the current one!

Cheers in advance

Garmin info

Are there any electronics gurus out there?

I'm going a full new electronics fitout for my new to me boat and looking for a bit of advise, I'm thinking of going all garmin which is very new to me as I have always run furuno sounders but I'm liking what I'm seeing with the garmin stuff, will be getting a couple of multi function displays, radar, autopilot and I'm trying to figure out what transducer/transducers I should get as I need to fit them before the boat goes back in the water. Would be keen to have a chat if anyone is happy to give some advise.

Cheers

Quick Gnaraloo report 2024

Well it's once again just like a dream now, the anticipation and build up all gone like tears in the rain :P

Was certainly a different trip with the wind blowing up the first 3 days and a lot of sitting around, bullshitting and drinking.

That said there's nothing like wallowing in the bay with a beer in hand and 8 scantily clad lasses in their G string bikinis close by makes you kinda forget your not out on the briney trying to slay fish.

The bite itself once we did get out was very slow when the tidal almanac said it was meant to be a peak midday bite....BS

Anyway we fed the sharks well on a diet of bottom meats and jigs, a lot of them out there now with some nice jewelry.

Many spots and depths were tried even my sacred spot in 100m produced one Goldband before being smashed with sharks, I lost one particular fish I reckon was no doubt a stonker red about a 3rd of the way up and was ready to throw my rod overboard in utter frustration. That particular spot has produced heaps of fish in the past so it consolidated my theory on the bite time being off.

Thankfully the next day we tried more north of the bay out in 60m and finally came accross some big bommies which held good fish, each drift producing something good.

The Coronation when hooked darted for his hidey hole and nearly bricked me before I gave him/her/they/them  plenty of slack and it  poked it's  head out finally and got him/her/they/them upwith high fives all round.

The Estuary I took for a shark and was pissed off for a bit before somthing twigged it wasn't and first sighting of colour had me yelling spittle for the net, it went 13.4kg nice stocking filler that one.

My PB Cobia at 16.1kg was pretty stoked with that. The Cobia actually saved our bag for the trip, there were plenty about  although we did get Some good Rankin, big Redthroat and Spangled.

The Mackies were good on the troll as well as a nice Yellowfin where we had excellent Sashimi one night.

Last troll of the trip saw us hook up to a Billfish in 30m just out of the bay, my son saw it jump but couldn't make it species wise. I did see it thrash about on the surface before it knifed through the leader FFS

Plenty of good laughs, banter at the filleting shed and a great steak night with a bottle of Grange put the icing on the cake.

Will be back for more punishment next year

Hey guys... so just arrived in Denham after leaving Exy but only here for 2 possibly 3 nights and have never fished out of here before so I'm basically throwing out a scared schoolboy cry for help on any info that might help me find anything (preferably top water) that might bend a coupla rods? I have no clue where to go or how to fish the area so any help will be sick! Cheers again f wreckers!

Sea Rescue

So, out fishing about 5nm south of Rotto about level with West End at lunchtime and radio goes off with a Pan call.  Epirb gone off about 14 miles west of us, Coast radio asking for assistance.  There were about 5 boats out further than us but no one responded, so we thought stuff it, we will go and help.  Were told the epirb coordinates were only accurate within about 4 miles, so we headed to that point.  Nearly there and caught a flash off  windscreen about 2 miles south and headed for it, found 2 guys in about a 16 to 17 ft boat with original rego in the 76000, so I guess built about early 80s or earlier.  They could only get there motor into gear in reverse, perhaps they should have taken the lid off and tried to select forward manually.  The interesting thing was that there was no radio aerial on the boat, and if they had a handheld there was no sign of it, nor did they try and call on 16 as we got nearer.  I asked where the radio was and they said they had also lost power to the front, but when I asked where the aerial was they had no answer.  Anyway, waited with then for half an hour while the cop boat arrived, then headed back.  All in all we travelled nearly 28nm, wasted 1 and a half hours, as did 2 other private boats that were also heading out.  I understand that we all need assistance at some time, but FFS, at least have a radio and an Epirb with GPS on it if you are going out 30nm from Fremantle.

Exmouth mackies???

Gday, Up in Exmouth at the moment until Wednesday and was wondering if anyone has any idea where the Spaniards are hanging around at the moment? Have put in some serious hours trolling along the back of the reef from northwest reef all the way down to around turquoise Bay Area with not even a single hit on any of the hard bodies, laser pros, samaki pacemakers, nomad Dtx minnows. So just wondering if anyone could point me in a general direction of where they have had any success recently? There's a carton in it for someone if they point me to the goods ;)

Cheers!

Furuno FCV627 issue

Last time out the Furuno FCV627 failed to power up. Took head unit to Furuno/Taylor Marine in Henderson & they put in on their power cable and they tell me it powered up no problems so therefore the cable was the issue. Bought (~$150) & installed new cable. Head unit still wouldn't power up.
Multi-metered cables at fuses 12.77V, fuses fine, cut some small wire and inserted into cable end connection points (see diagram 7+ & 8-) still 12.77V. Contact cleaned the head unit connection pins, & they all appear to be fine. Anyone experienced this or can offer some fault finding I ain't already done?

Catching Occys in Reef

After advice about any techniques/tools that people use for pulling occys out of their holes in the reef?

I have always just used a cheap aluminium gidgee which for the most part does the trick, but I am sick of breaking the flimsy things!

I typically try and lever them out with the gidgee so not sure I want to try this with a fibreglass gidgee.... Thiking something more along the lines of a hook fixed to the end of a pole to pull them out.

warhoo and sharks

My mates sons where out fishing in the 150 meter mark out from safety bay. Hooked some snapper and decided to have a troll. The reel was screaming and line peeling off at a hundred mila an hour with the spool getting empty prety quickly so they started chasing what was on the end of the line. After finally landing the fish they were suprised to find it was a 20 kilo wahoo. my mate said they gave him some to try and he said it was nice on the tooth.

They went out yesterday morning behind the F/F near coventry and hooked in to some salmon. While pulling one into the boat a 3 meter white pointer came up and smashed into the side of the baot with its head out the water and took the salmon. One of the men in the boat was knocked to the other side of the boat and luckily fell on his arse instead of over the side. They didn't manage to get a whole fish into the boat after that. Plenty of salmon out there at the moment.

Removing rust from trailer

 G'day,

I'm about to pull the boat off the trailer (box section) and attack some rust on my trailer. Not sureof the best way to go about it.

I'm thinking of just grinding/sanding rust where possible and once back to bare steel just primer and then paint.

What are best tools to sand/grind in the hard to get to spots?

What are the best options to coat the bare steel?

I'm not sure how to go about treating the insides of the box section so I'm guessing she'll have to rust from the inside out.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers
