HDS sounder photos

Still trying to get used to my HDS 8 and I'm having trouble identifying fish on the sounder.

I'm using palette 13 and the sensitivity is around 60 and the colourline around 70. The transducer is transom mount 50/200khz and this was taken on the 200khz setting.

This photo was taken when I was catching fish

and this when I thought there was fish (there was fish on the surface but I thought there would be some on the bottom but nothing? It showed what I thought was a school on the bottom and these were here the hole time I was fishing.

Also what speed can I go before the reading become inaccurate? What palette do people use? what kind of sensitivity for what waters?

Cheers

Try find that with a recreational sounder

Cray pot. The camera was struggling to focus, but you get the picture...

Graphite 12" rod

This might be crazy, but I'm looking for a 12" rod primarily to suit an 8000 baitrunner with #20 mono, but also keen to slap the Stella 20k on it when sharks are around (average whalers). The Stella runs #50 braid. Can you think of a rod preferably under $200?

GPS/SOUNDER Lowrance HDS7-Gen2 or Furono GP1870F

Last sounder died the other weekend. I have looked at the two mentioned and both look good to me, any suggestions?

Trout lures and flies

Hi Crew, i have been asked by some members what lures i use for trout fishing in the dams. So i thought i would post up some pictures of the lures and flies i like the most . Some lures are quite expensive but i asure you lots of the cheeper types work just as well and in fact when it gets windy i usualy go for the cheep spinners with a bit of weight in them so i can cast into the wind.

Theses are a few of my spinners that have all caught fish in Harvey dam . The orange and black wipp is the one i bought yesterday at the servo and caught a nice rainbow on it. All of theses lures are quite cheep to buy but work well.

This group of lures are also cheep to buy ( compared to other brands ) but all have worked well with good swiming action. Lots of cheeper lure don't swim very well and are a waste of money. These few in the picture have impressed me for the price .

Here are some clasic RMG lures and some other types of lures that work well.

Now to my favorite minnow lures. Cheep lures can work but sometimes you need to trick fussy trout with floating, sinking and suspending type lures. There are a lot of new brands out now that probaly are better but i'm a bit old school and cant resist the classic Rapala minnow and others. The XRaps are a new addition for me and i'm very impressed with the way you can finness the action to temp very fussy trout.

For the fly fishers these are the main flies i use. The Wooly Bugger has to be the go to fly for the dams down south and i have had all of the variations work for me .

Close up of a Black Wooly Bugger and the Olive Green variation

Wooly Bugger variations with bead heads and tinsell bodys + larger colour patterns

Mr's Simpsons also catch fish when worked very slow in the water

Craigs Night time , can tempt the trout if they are being fussy.

I hope this helps some of you who would like to try trout and redfin fishing with lures. I am no expert, but after a few years chasing freshwater fish these are the lures i take and use. As i said a lot of the time i throw the cheeper spinners around during long days on the dam. They cast well, are cheep enough to throw close to trees and snags and you can work them at different depths to find fish. You don't have to spend a fortune to catch trout and redfin, but let me warn you, after catching a big rainbow or brown the addiction sets in and you will find your wallet emptied on just a handfull of expensive tiny lures. lol

Cheers Grant .

PM problems.. Sorted

Anyone else having problems with PMs lately?

It looks like everytime I send one, it doesnt go through and doenst show up in my sent box. it tells me the message has been sent, but must be getting lost in the post somewhere along the way...

If I reply to someone or continue on an old message string, it works OK, but trying to send a new one doesnt have much luck...

Tonic Sunglasses, High Contrast Copper Bronze Photochromic?

Has anyone got a pair of these? Is the colour transition visually obvious? I can't tell if they are changing colour and I'm worried I got a polycarbonate pair instead of a glass photochromic...

Is there any other way I can tell if they are glass photochromic lens?

Mackerel Island off Onslow - Reason for closure

I thought I read a few months ago that the resort was closing because Chevron bought out the lease.

In today's West Australian paper (page 1 of West Business) it states that the Mackerel Island's is seeking to lease 80% of its accommodation to Chevron. Good news is that they will keep 20% for us fisherman.

Looks more like a business decision rather than their hand been forced.

Busselton, Bunbury, Augusta charters? Or we pay you? :)

Hey guys,

Looking at taking the missus south in 2 wks for a couple days and we are keen to do some boat based fishing whilst we are there. Can anyone tell me from personal experiance which companies were worth the money and which arent? I can only find legends on the internet do any others exist?

Alternatively if any of you are from down that way and may be heading out on the 16th or 17th of october could sort you out a couple hundred to take us out. We have all out own gear and the missus is easy on the eyes haha..

Rankin Cod

We were given some rankin cod fillets by some guys who had just got back from the monty's and being a chef i was looking forward to cooking it, when i seared it on the hot plate i got all the skin crispy seasoned nice then we all went to try it for lunch and the flesh was inedible the flesh was just like mush and floury can any 1 tell me why this is? the fish had been frozen but shouldnt have affected the fish that much

Anyone fish metro sunday?

We did a short stint on the 3 mile.....everything against us, tide, middle of the day, extremely green and turbid water. Fished soft plastics for a few hours till the sea breeze stormed in for a rather predictable very average day, just a few Bakers released.

Interested to hear if anyone else went out and if they had any success in the dirty post storm water, bait or artificials?

Exmouth Deckis available

A mate of mine is heading up this Saturday for 2 weeks and is keen to do some boat fishing. He loves his fishing but has had little exposure to boat fishing or catching big fish. His experience does not go much beyond chasing tailor off the rocks.

He is up there with a mate so if anyone wants someone to split costs with then please message me and I will send you his number. He is a top bloke.

Exmouth Landbase Advice

I have a buddy heading up on Saturday for 2 weeks. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a few good land base spots besides the jetties, boat ramps and marina.

Brownie points replinished!

Daughter's bedroom renovated.  Check.

Ikea furniture assembled and in position.  Check.

Run to the tip.  Check.

Garden weeded and mulched.  Check.

Brownie points replinished? Too right they are!

Freezer needs a top up.  Check.

Watch out fish!  Next weekend can't come quick enough.  Long range forecast looking good.  Moon / sun positioning looking good.  Unfortunately Freo have the week off playing, so I won't be watching the footy!

Better go fishing instead!

Reel service in Perth?

Am heading down to the big smoke in a couple weeks and need to get my TLD30A 2speed serviced- getting a bit stiff n creaky...

Any advice on who and where (preferably north of river) can do a good job without too much turn around time? I used to go and see Jim Head years ago and heard hes still going around, but that was only for simpler spinners etc.

Cheers

Fishermen winched from water

Reported in the West Breaking News  http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/breaking/14933442/fishermen-winched-from-water/

"Three adults and a teenager have been winched from the water by the rescue helicopter after their boat overturned when it was hit by a wave near Garden Island this morning.

The stricken dinghy set off an EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority just after 7am and the RAC rescue helicopter was sent to the scene.

All four of the men, who were uninjured, were winched to safety and are being taken to Jandakot Airport where they will be met by family."

Big swells today, so hopefully nobody else got caught out by the conditions.

furuno 585 help and advice please

Finally looking at getting a 585 with a transom mount transducer for the tub and was after a bit of advice from anyone who has had some expereince with them plz... I havent been seriously looking at them for long but have been doing a fair bit of reading but have some rookie questions:

-Tranny: will a 1kw make much of a difference in terms of speed I will be able to do while still getting a decent read? Or does it only really help in deeper water etc?

-Tranny: I have noticed there are 2 1kw models that get regularly mentioned: the TM258 and TM260. Whats the main differences between these? Im prepared to pay the extra for the 260 if people recommend it being worthwhile?

-If set up properly, what sort of speed can I realistically expect to be able to do while still getting a decent bottom read? I understand that a lot of variables come into play (correct mounting/ settings etc) but what is the usual results with a decent installation and set up? I know it should read alright at trolling speed (correct me if Im wrong, but it should be able to still not just read the bottom but also pick up fish etc at 8-11knts?) but will it be able to do 20-30knts and still give a decent read?

No doubt I will be asking more questions when I get it (waiting on the tax return to hopefully be able to afford it!) but any basic advice on what sort of settings etc to use for this type of searching would be much appreciated as well

Cheers in advance, i know its a heap of questions, but any help n advice would be much appreciated

Anyone know where to get an old pneumatic speargun serviced?

Hi, I have on old speargun from the late 1970s. My dad gave it to me a while back. It is a Mares Pnuematic gun but it leaks and doesnt hold pressure. I tried contacting Mares but they were not much help. Ended up emailing some lady from Italy that said there probably not any service kits available for it. Does anyone know if there are any dive stores or anywhere I can send it to have it repaired? It is an awsome gun with the two chambers and the handle in the centre like a bazooka. Took it into Karratha and they told me it couldnt be fixed and then tried to sell me a WAY overpriced new gun. Best gun Ive used and dont want to see it go to waste. Cheers.
