Ramp Trouble - Ocean Reef
Submitted by Belly Fish on Mon, 2012-10-01 23:12Came back in to Ocean Reef around 2:30pm on Sunday. Probably around 12 boats idling around waiting their turn to get onto the ramp. Being Ocean Reef, normally doesn’t take too long.
Some bloke in an 18-19 foot boat drives past us all, ignoring the glares, and drops his mate off…presumably to go get the car/trailer and get his boat out before the others that are dutifully queuing.
Just as I pull into the jetty, he’s backing his car/trailer down the centre of the ramps. Of course, they are not really wide enough to do that, so he effectively blocks one ramp. The guy being blocked just looks on….pretty peeved that this joker has more or less just got to the marina, yet is blocking him from getting his boat out when he’s done the right thing and queued like everyone else.
Credit due, the fellow drives the boat up on the trailer with no fuss. Now, anyone who launched at Ocean Reef on the weekend will know there was a lot of weed on the ramps. This is where his trouble started. Try as he may, he couldn’t get any traction on the weed. Even pulling it away didn’t work, as by now it was ground in and slimy.
I now walk up to get my car/trailer, and drive down. He’s still sending blue smoke off the tyres, despite his mate jumping all over the back of the car…..nobody’s helping. The guy being blocked just looks on. I reverse down and winch the boat up….he’s still not going anywhere. Guy being blocked now visibly cheesed.
At this stage the guy being blocked realises that he isn’t going anywhere while this dill is wearing out a set of back tyres. He eventually hooks a rope from his trailer to his car, as I drive off. I heard that he eventually got out.
I can’t help feeling there’s a lesson here. This bloke thought he could short cut an orderly queue, and instead blocked up a ramp for what must have been 15-20 minutes, plus probably ruined a set of back tyres.

Must visit tacklestores
Submitted by Yewiefish85 on Mon, 2012-10-01 17:46Hi guys, having just returned from Brisbane and having the oportunity to visit "Fishhead" it got me thinking, in different towns or cities what is your must visit tackle store?, i'm talking interstate and overseas, not online tackle stores but walk in stores and why is it on your must visit list, be it level of service, local information or variety of different toys to play with.
not meaning to offend any site sponsors just wanting to know what stores others recomend and why?
if offending to any site sponsors then moderators please delete, if not lets hear what stores you guys recomend is worth a visit.
Cheers Yewie

Becoming a SW fisho again
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2012-10-01 13:55Well moving back to our own home in Mandurah, with me becoming a FIFO.
So days off will be down there again.
Just a couple of points I am confused with. Is the closure for the sound only, or is this the start off the full demersal ban.
Can you fish for Kg's, whiting, skippy etc.
I can look this up but thought I would ask.
Cheers

Big baits for big fish
Submitted by docmattskin on Mon, 2012-10-01 13:16I am relatively new to boat fishing, based in Bunbury. I most enjoy the time out on the water with my sons ( aged 10 ans 13 - good experiences shared together!) We have made several trips out as far as 20 miles and have only once come back in with an empty esky - so we are happy wiht that.
However we have not been able to land a better than "just - size" fish apart form a few sambos and skippy.
Our rigs mostly have 2/0 snelled circle hooks and usually a whole squid ( Lund's type, approx 15 cm length) and I'm beginning to think that bigger baits are needed to attract bigger fish. I am not asking for trade secrets but any advise or tips on hook / bait size and presentation would be appreciated.
Thanks guys,
dms

Ramp Karma - Mindarie 30/09/12
Submitted by Andy Mac on Mon, 2012-10-01 11:54Witnessed a bit of ramp Karma yesterday. Not that I would wish this on anybody...but....
As we were coming into port from the west a brand new seafarer was at (what looked like) WOT running along the face of the rockwall heading North seemingly to cut us off and get to the ramp before us. He would have been 10m away from the rocks all the way as he swung tight around the groin and proceeded at about 15knots all the way in.
"Look at that idiot" I said to my deckie, "where are the speed cameras when you need them?"
He shot all the way in probably busting heaps of lines from the guys fishing the rock wall.
Anyway we get inside the marina and sure enought this guy is in front of us as several boats wait in line for an open spot to get out. He finds his spot then we head to ours next to him. I think nothing more of it until while I am winching the boat up I hear this almighty "THUD" as this guy drops his huge glass boat onto the concrete. Apparently his cable had snapped but you have to ask with a boat that size why didn't he have a solid turnbuckle on it.
God knows how he got it back on the trailer as aparently he was trying to use a little skinny rope to get it on (no chance) that thing would have weighed 2 tonnes. No doubt there would have been a massive delay getting boats out after that as he was across two lanes, leaving only one retrieve lane until he got it out of there.
There was a heap of bystanders offering advice and helping him out so I reasoned the best thing for me to do was get my boat out of there and leave some room for the next guy to get out. Though the next driver would have to have used some pretty neat reversing skills to get a trailer back in around this guys car and boat.
Anyone know if he got it back up on the trailer and how he did it? (Crane job is what I was thinking).

those that got out yesterday (sun)
Submitted by grayzeee on Mon, 2012-10-01 11:11Just wondering how everyone else did on yesterdays full moon.
It was a fair day personally , and while I did get my two demersals , they were at opposite ends of the trip.
Managed a 50cm bb in the morning and a 60cm baldie nigh on last drop , but inbetween those came heaps of small to just size dhu's , small snapper and sgt bakers , rock cod's and footballers. (lot's of shit fish basically)
Jig's did very well but bait also got the baldie.
On a side note , copped a parking infringement from OR after the bloody ticket machines roobed me of $9 and left me without a ticket. What do you do?

denham report
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sun, 2012-09-30 16:02hi guys
we just got back from a week in denham, heres a few pics from the week.
myself and the boys went out squidding as much as possible with the biggest squid i have ever got caught from the jettys on most nights, blake also got a couple of nice flatheads at 45cm and his mate zac got some small pinkys to 40cm and a nice wobegong all from the jetty at night.
not alot of fishing done due the the winds, but it was supposed to be a family holiday anyway.
but there was no way i was going up there without a go on the charter!!
we went out with unreal charters, 7.20am start and did the long 2hr chug out to turtle bay, bit of a late start for my liking but worth it when we got there.
started of slow for me with only small fish coming in while the others were pulling in some nice blackies.
finnaly i get a good hit and come up with a 90cm cobia

a few more drops resulted in a few smaller blackies, redthroats, rankins, honneycombe trout and alot of grassys, then i get another solid hook up and i pull in good size baldy, very nice but i get them in perth so i wanted a bit more.
ten minutes later, im on again, bigger than the baldy for sure, got to see some color and then the taxmen said i owed them one.... *#@%$(), skipper called it for a very large rankin cod, i was not happy jan!!!
with the taxmen taking a few fish it was time to head to another spot, 5min chug and we drop down again, i had changed over to my pe1with 5000 stradic in the travel and first drop down..... BANG, instant hook up, it feels good but its the first decent fish i have hooked up on the new rod so im a bit unsure, a few minutes later i pull in my first and pb coral trout at 75cm....boy am i happy and all the boat knows about it.

alot of dribbling went on for the rest of the day with some good fish coming onboard, without being to much up myself, i think i did the best for the day out of 7 onboard, i only missed out on one of the big blackies, i still got a couple but.
this was the ended catch back at shore.

now to some not so important pics as it was not all about fishing, but for those who know me, fishing rules my life!!
our setup parked up for a smoke brake(wifes not aloud to smoke in the car) at the entry to shark bay, i hated having to stop and being a reformed smoker for 10+years im always on her case about quiting.....one day hopefully.

our camp set up next to our very good freinds in the caravan
our watch dog for the trip....DIGGER.....such a sook with us but to anybody not in our camp....he wants to rip your arm off!!
had a couple of complaints about his chain being to long? he could get to the edge of the shadow (in the prvious camp pic), dont invade our privacy and there is no problem, most people were aware of this and would only come to the car to chat.

couple of pics from the outdoor aquirium, defo worth the look, the wife loved it.
she was facinated with the scorpion and stone fish, but loved bob the turtle the most.
there were so many fish to look at, with the best for me being the big barras.
couple of good size red empeor having a feed...ohhhh i wish i had a rod so bad!!!

this blue bone kept swimming sideways with his eye out of the water looking at us, want a feed i reckon.

back at camp it was getting a bit boring at night time with only drinking to keep whitey and myself busy, so it was off to the shops to get some games.
this one being the best for getting drunk...you knock em down...you get a straight shot of sambooka, makers mark, southern comfort, canandian club or jim beam, we tried to cover all bases!! and you had to restack them.
the good old uno was the next best when the kids are playing

we got ourselfs in trouble the night before so it was do the righty and take the wives out to dinner.
great night with alot of laughs and a few drinks with out the kids for a change.
the old shell resturant, nice food at a resonable cost.
whitey and rossie up the back with myself and my wife kellie up front.

but nothing last too long...
it was along 5min walk back to camp with a few sambooka shots along the way for whitey and myself, back to the bad books again!!

the next morning it was time to pack up and leave, so it was done to the beach to feed the seagulls so old leftovers, with hundreds of gulls around it was throw food at jake and see how many birds would attck him....the pic dose not do it justice, there was that many birds above his head just out of the pic.... one of the funniest things i have seen.

on the way out of town the wife made me stop for this pic, she wanted to take one home.

all up we had a great week even though it was a bit windy for 90% of the stay, some great company with long time freinds with a bit of fishing thrown on top.
as we headed home troy was on his way to exmouth for a week with the tinny and his mates, got a pic on the phone this morning of a 120cm+ dollie for the first fish out of the tinny.
wish i was there with him!!
cheers guys

GARMIN GSD24
Submitted by Cruise Control on Sat, 2012-09-29 10:25Does anyone have any experience or exposure to the Garmin GSD24 ?
Apparently comes highly recommended from Gil Travis of Semperfi Fishing who is a regular contributor to the US Forum The Hull Truth. He claims one of his favourites to be the Furuno FCV585 with 1KW transducer but he believes the Garmin to be a bit better. I've seen several screen shots one of which was tracking solid bottom in 1600 ft at 27 mph. There is also a good slideshow at this link -http://www.planetseafishing.com/catchreports/read/garmin-gsd-24-testing
Anyone used or seen this "black box" which hooks up to their MFD units ?
thanks
