Swan river Alien

A DESTRUCTIVE feral fish has been discovered in the Swan River, sparking a Department of Fisheries survey.

The Department of Fisheries has initiated surveys of the Swan River, near Eden Hill and Caversham, for feral pearl cichlids, after a member of the public found several of the unwanted species in the river last week.

Subsequent surveys by researchers have not yet located any further samples, but the find has raised concerns that pearl cichlids may have already established in the Swan River.

Director of Aquatic Management Greg Paust said the species was first located in Bennett Brook in 2006 and action was taken in a bid to control their spread.

“We fear that the freshwater aquarium species, which was probably dumped in a local waterway that  feeds into Bennett Brook, could end up impacting on the native fish species that currently inhabit the  upper reaches of the Swan River,” Mr Paust said.

“This common aquarium fish, which is a prolific breeder and can survive in saline waters, could impact on the local ecosystem, but the extent of its impact is unknown at this stage.”

Mr Paust said, when the cichlids were first discovered in March of 2006, steps were taken to limit their  spread through various control techniques in a range of water bodies – at Altone Park, the Altone Park Golf Course irrigation ponds, drainage systems and natural streams like Bennett Brook.

“The Department of Fisheries has spent approximately $300,000 over the last three years on the difficult  and challenging control program,” he said. “As recently as last year the fish poison rotenone was applied in Bennett Brook, to try and limit downstream movement of cichlids, but unfortunately, it appears that this may not have successfully contained the feral population.”

Mr Paust said the Department of Fisheries would continue to monitor the Swan River in the area where the cichlids were found to confirm whether the species has become established, but action to eradicate them was not considered a viable option.

“Likely impacts on the Swan River ecosystem are unknown because, while the cichlids could dominate native species in freshwater environments, their ability to reproduce, spread and compete in the more saline sections of the river is unknown,” he said.

“The Department of Fisheries is working closely with the Swan River Trust in respect to this recent
development and meeting key stakeholders again this week to discuss the issue. The Swan River Trust has also provided $12,500 funding for research on cichlids, since they were found in Bennett Brook.

“This incident highlights the major problems, costs and environmental impacts that can occur when people dispose of exotic species into our aquatic ecosystems.”

Mr Paust urged aquarium owners to never release exotic fish, algae or other aquatic life in our waterways as, in most cases, it was impossible to eradicate these unwanted species once they had been established.

"Shorter" Popper Rods

For the GT Fishermen out there,

Can anyone recommend a Popper rod, that is shorter than the normal GT rods... I am looking for a rod to be used to throw poppers at GT's from a boat while up north later this year.

Problem is that I don't want a 8 foot type rod (ie Saltiga, Shimano GT Special etc) as I need to find a use for it locally (ie jigging - note I already have a jig setup and this would act as a second combo).

I will be running a Saragosa 18000 on which ever rod I go for...

Any thoughts?

My New Luvias 3000

Gday all, received my new Luvias 3000 just before the weekend and love it, out of the box anyway. Plan on changing the handle and replacing the washers soon, should I wait and see if the original washers stuff up or just straight in with the replacements for peace of mind? Can't wait to get out and use it, hopefully can test the drag on some hard running fish.

OLD FARTS PLUS STU HIT THE SOUTH WEST

With much anticipation, Sherbs, Tackleshack Doug, Uncle Stu and myself left Perth last Friday to hit the south west in the search for salmon.
With reports that salmon schools were marauding a number of different beaches in the south west corner, we squeezed ourselves into the two 4WDs.
As you can imagine, the two vehicles were packed to the rafters with fishing rods, tackle boxes and eskys, but somehow we managed to all fit in and survive the 4 hour drive to our first destination - Uncle Stu’s “Southern Hideaway”.

I won’t give away the final location, but I will say the “old farts” were pleasantly surprised to find that Uncle Stu’s family holiday house was a beautiful home, fit with all the mod cons, including a great fire place, three fridges - and more than enough bed rooms so that we didn’t have to put up with each others “night noises”.

With the enthusiasm of a bunch of youngsters on our first trip away, we were up until 12.30pm checking our gear, making new rigs and deciding which of our many rods and reels we would be taking with us for our first soiree in the hunt for salmon in the morning.
The next morning, we were up and at them when Uncle Stu woke us at 5am with the smell of a delicious full breakfast.
A quick re-check of our gear and we all piled into the two wagons and headed off to Salmon Beach with hopes high. With a name like that, it just had to be good.
Unfortunately, we arrived to find the beach was being pounded by massive swells, and the low tide meant that the gutter we were going to be targeting was not available to us.
Nevertheless, we made our way onto what is a beautiful looking beach and set to work casting mulies into what little “green water” was available.
A heap of weed washing around in the big waves wasn’t helping - and after four hours we had one herring between us.
Time for a new plan.
This time we headed for nearby Windy Harbour where we ran into a south west local fishing near the boat ramp. He suggested we hit the sand in our 4WDs and head to a spot where a reef was located close to the beach.
The conditions at Windy Harbour couldn’t have been more different. Hardly any swell and not much wind. But with the tide rising, we would only have a short amount of time to test out this spot.
While we only managed a small whiting in the limited time available, this did look like a very promising spot, which we decided we would try the following morning.

With tummies rumbling it was time to head back to camp and to try the local pubs famed “counter” lunches.
Of course we had to see if the beer was okay and if the pool table still worked (watch out for Sherbs) he is a bit of a pool shark).
Stomachs full, it was time to return home to sort out our gear for the planned afternoon hunt for Redfin in the local river.
With Uncle Stu leading the way we made the short trip the beautiful local river and soon began making our way up and down the banks throwing a variety of lures. After I hooked a small Redfin in the first five minutes on a small vibe, we were pretty hopeful. But that was to be it for the afternoon.
Back to camp we headed to fill our boots and to get ready for another salmon hunt in the morning.

With Sherbs itching to get back into the action, we were up and 4.30 to partake of another massive breakfast before hitting the road to Windy Harbour to try out the reef spot we had tested the day before.
After a quick drive along the beach we hit our chosen location in what looked to be fantastic conditions.
Out went the baits and it was soon clear there were some good fish around, if we could get our baits away from the swarms of small whiting and a big school of herring.
I still had a whiting from the day before and no sooner than it hit the water than it was monstered by a nice tailor.
Doug soon hooked onto something decent, but after a quick jump and a big splash the fish was off. We called that for a salmon.
Doug had another good hit, with the fish again throwing the hooks, and then the herring moved in and began monstering our baits.
Sherbs (also known as “Stingray Steve”) soon hooked up to a pretty sizeable stingray, which thankfully broke off in the shore wash. He then landed a smaller Eagle Ray and I hooked onto another big ray, which thankfully threw the hooks before it took my braid around the reef.
After that it was a matter of catching our fill of herring, while hoping the salmon would turn up.
Uncle Stu managed a “mini” salmon, but unfortunately that was the only one we landed.
With the tide rising and a long trip back to Perth in front of us, we reluctantly made our way back to the camp to clean up and pack the rest of our gear.

While the salmon didn’t turn up - we had a fantastic time. A great host, great company, beautiful countryside, lots of laughs, some good fishing. You couldn’t ask for more.

I will post a few more pics when I get my camera back from the back of Doug’s wagon.

CVT Transmission - Any good?

Hi All,

Just want an opinion regarding CVT transmissions.

Are they any good for towing?

the car in question is the new Murano with 6 speed in manual mode.

191KW and 330 or something torque.

Will be towing a 5M ali centre console!

Woodies

Took a mate fishing out in the sound yesterday afternoon out from woodies boat ramp and noticed lots of window glass where people park their trailers, spoke to the caretaker from the power boat club and he mentioned that car's are getting broken in to more often and that he has seen one bloke but has not managed to get his rego yet he drives a white toyota corolla,Its a real shame as you used to be able to park your car there overnight go for a fish and not have to worry, this bloke mainly seems to target Saturday,Sunday and Tuesday nights.

Anyway went to have a fish but ended up getting harrased by junior snappers, the largest being 38cm they are in plague proportions couldnt even catch a herring without a little snapper jumping on the line all released without harm with words go foward grow large and I will catch you next time.

Yeagarup Salmon

Fished Yeagarup on the weekend. Fished hard all day Saturday for no result apart from Herring. Talked to other people on the beach and no one caught Salmon. Sunday was different with most catching fish up to about 9.30am. All Salmon kept were not wasted.

albany bream (thanks Colin)

finally i got out for a fish today.
being new to albany i was grateful for colin (dreamweaver) to show me around.
we put the boat in at around 9am, then out again around 9.02am to empty the water from the hull and put the bungs in that i had previously forgot :-)
colin was catching fish from the start and had around 10 good sized bream to his name before i had any :-(
after colin kindly re rigged me with flourocarbon leader i started to catch a few and had a great mornings fishing.
Final count was well in excess of 40 bream (mostly colins)

Thank you colin for putting up with me and getting me into some fish,I'm looking forward to next time
cheers
Dave

Shimano Tiralejo

Hi Guys,

My wife requested i go and buy a new rod so she can use my old one and come out fishing with me (BOOYAH!), so i've been eyeing off the Tiralejo rods which look really nice.

Has anyone had any experience with these rods for beach fishing and what sizes would you recommend?

Also, since i'm going a new rod, i need to get a new reel :) Any suggestions on what you would recommend to pair with the Tiralejo?

BTW, it'll mostly be used for fishing and Hillarys, Floreat Basin and Dawesville

10 Foot Beach Rod Required

Last week I was unfortunate enough to lose my 10ft Ugly stick combo. (Long story so let's not go there). I am left with a 9ft Ugly I use with light braid and my 12ft Ugly stick for serious beach work. It's like a missing spanner not having that middle of the road option for Tailor, Salmon and Mulloway in lighter conditions.

Rather than rush out and buy a new stick I was woundering if any of you have a good condition spare lying around that you may want to part with for a reasonable sum.

Can any of you guys help out here?

Cheers,
