No one gets anything good at the mole.
Submitted by till on Sat, 2008-05-17 12:20
As usual I turn up at the mole to see the action, but not get any. I was going to get up at 5am, but decided to sleep in till 5:20am. Dammit, it always happens like this.
A school of them was just passing through about 6:05 - 6:15, there were three hookups but only one landed. My scales are only marked to 12kg, and they pulled them out about a third as much again, so perhaps 18kg, this was after it had spent a few hours on the rocks and had been bled as well!
Apart from that fish, all I saw landed was a few herring, a squid and I jagged a few pathetic garfish. I was probably there 6am till about 11 perhaps.

Went woodies...it sucked
Submitted by flangies on Sat, 2008-05-17 11:56Went woodies point jetty , hoping for something big, saw a couple tuna suprisingly right off the end... Grabbed a lure, Too late :(
Ended up spending bout 1 hour catching a mix of mackeral, skippy and yellowtail.
Stuck the big baits out, First rod went off (my beast of a rod) fought like a snapper, i was hell excited but when it came up it was a shovelnose :(
About 4-5kg
Then got a port jackson about 3kg
Then went home, stopped at servo to get a pie, $4 for this little crappy size of half my fist pie.
It sucked.

Baitball strategies
Submitted by eddie on Fri, 2008-05-16 15:13Ok, now remember that I am new to saltwater fishing, and relatively new to Australia, so that pretty much makes me a noob all around.
So a few times now while out fishing, we've come upon an active baitball. Problem is, we can't ever seem to cath anything around them. I understand that just bc fish are actively feeding on bait, does not 100% guarantee, but I think I could use some tips on how to attack them.
So give me your best shot!
How do you approach one?
Are there ways to tell what is feeding?
Do you cast or troll?
What lures? or do you baitcast?
any and all help is much appreciated! Thanks!

On the local scene again.
Submitted by Howz60 on Fri, 2008-05-16 14:35G'day all,
I just dropped in to to say hi after joining this site the other day.
First chance I've had to log on.
Tho I'm new here, I am no stranger to WA and Perth fishing as I have been around since late 1973 - ex US and NZ
I have been away since the end of 2004 and recently returned. So I have a lot of unfished hours to catch up on.
With no boat except 12' tinnie without motor things will be a bit restricted for a while.
I hope to run into some of you great people on fishing outings around this fair town and afar and look forward to many hours online here at Fishwrecked.
Broke my draught with this fine little specimen at Hilarys Marina south end last week. Went 3.43kg and made for 4 delicious meals.
Cheers, Howz60

WA Fishing Initiatives
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-05-15 13:14Hi chaps
These are the 2007-2008 WA Fisheries Department Major Initiatives For Management of the State’s Recreational Fisheries as outlined in the WA Budget papers.
• Commence a major research project into the sustainability of blue swimmer crabs on the West Coast.
• Implement new management arrangements to protect crab stocks in the West Coast region.
• Commence Integrated Fisheries Management planning for demersal finfish in the West Coast region to determine future allocations between the recreational and commercial fishing sectors.
• Finalise Integrated Fisheries Management allocations between the commercial and recreational fishing sectors for the rock lobster and abalone resource.
• Review fishing consultative structures to ensure effective communication and consultation with recreational and commercial fishers and their peak representative bodies under an Integrated Fisheries Management framework.
• Review freshwater finfish fisheries in the Southwest, including the interaction between trout and other native fish to ensure the protection of native fish whilst promoting a viable recreational trout fishery.
• Review State-wide possession limits for recreational finfish to ensure long-term sustainability.
• Review management arrangements for key demersal species in the West Coast region.
Estimated budget outlay for 2007-08
Just over 10.2 million (That makes the $2 million the Federal Government has budgeted for the whole of Australia look pretty poor).

Sea Anchor ( Drift Sock )
Submitted by Big Kev on Tue, 2008-05-13 18:52Hello all, I'm curious to know where on your boat do you attach your Sea Anchor while drift fishing. I always attach it to the Skippers side of the boat about mid-ship so the boat drifts sideways causing more drag to help slow the boat down and also allows you to fish comfortably out the back. Does anyone attach their Sea Anchor to the rear or any other area of the boat and for what reasons?
Cheers Kev

Barra threatened by 'cane toad' fish
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2008-05-13 16:48Also courtesy of the ABC
The Northern Territory Fisheries Department fears a foreign species of fish is heading to the Territory and says it should strike fear into fisherman.
The tilapia fish reproduces in huge numbers and eats the food sources of native fish like barramundi.
Fisheries' aquatic pest management coordinator Helen Cribb compares the fish to another well known pest marching across north Australia - the cane toad.
"They'll basically take over a habitat. They're a stronger competitor, reproduce in larger numbers, able to tolerate a broader variety of conditions with a much wider food source.
"They're effective competitors and they're also a very aggressive species, so they will push other species out of the way."
She says the aggressive fish has recently been spotted in Queensland's river systems which drain into the Gulf of Carpentaria, and are now posing a major threat to the Top End's freshwater ecosystems.
The tilapia fish is about 30 centimetres long, either dark grey or dark olive green in colour and has a pointed dorsal fin.
Anyone who spots the fish is urged to contact the department.

Submitted by Carolyn on Tue, 2008-05-13 16:18I need a good Reel Servicer.. My Penn Accord is crap. Stuffed up my fishing weekend.. I put it in for repairs to get the Bail arm roller fixed as it was shredding the line.. Got it back from repairer with new line on it used it once and shredded line again.. I will have to take it back to the shop i had it repaired at.. My husband has given me his Okuma but it feels like its grinding its not smooth to wind anymore.. So i was looking at getting it serviced somewhere but definaitly not where i took the Penn.

New Aust record for the biggest snapper caught on video
Submitted by Snappersthego on Tue, 2008-05-13 11:50It could be a new Australian record for the biggest snapper caught in South Australia at Arno Bay area but caught by a victoria sadly..20kg its still being verifyed..
the guy said..."The initial weight of this fish was at 42lb but after checking the scales used to weigh it against 2 sets of salter scales & also doing a comparison with buckets of water at the local butcher shop with scales certified for trade use this fish weighed 44lb, yes 20kg. It is going to be mounted for all to see & once done will live on the wall at Hotel Arno for all to see.""
Just waiting for the link..all the best..
