Manic Crab
Submitted by C.P on Tue, 2015-06-16 15:54I dont go to BCF often but dropped in today. They had some plastic crabs lures on display with a video loop, Jig heads that sit the crab up at 45 degrees. Probably have been around for a while but i hadnt seen them before. Looked very interesting but that doesnt always mean they work. I think they were called Manic Crabs.
Has any one used them?

Cockburn sound advice
Submitted by sea-kem on Sun, 2015-06-14 20:27ok guys, looking to take the boys and one of their mate's out next Sat for a Snapper and Squid bash. The trip has two elements as the boat's just been serviced and new steering cable so want to give her a run before Gnaraloo in August. So just looking for some Pinky tips area wise, I've heard a lot of you head to the back of the five fathom bank? So what sort of depth, time of day etc. Even better if someone's heading out for a run on Sat would love to tag along and help you berley up, be good to meet some local crew and this will be a novelty fishing metro for me. We'll probably head to Parmelia bank afterwards for some Squid.
Cheers

Johnson outboard troubleshoot
Submitted by Super peg on Sat, 2015-06-13 13:02Hey guys,
recently I've been foolish a buggered up my helm and steering cables so the boat has been out of action for a while now as I gather the funds to fix her, been a bit hard with my new roster/building a house and so forth anyways......
normally I would start my outboard every time I'm home, ( every second week) and she was sweet, she is a 1994 Johnson 40hp with oil injection,
after i buggered the steering I gave my fuel to a friend and when home and washing her I let it run dry( out of fuel) as I knew it would be a while before I could get it on the water again,
After three weeks of sitting in the shed I have gone to start it and it would fire and run for maybe 3-5 seconds
then die out, I tried this about ten times with similar results, checking the spark plugs and they seemed fine and I checked the fuel lines from tank to filter and that all seems fine any ways I had placed to be and had to pack her away again until today, so today with fresh 98 fuel I once again tried to get it running,
same problem, runs for 3-5 seconds then dies, sound like its possibly starving, So a few curses and looking for small faults with limited mech exp, I discovered now that I'm leaking oil out of the prop and skeg , it looks like motor oil and not leg oil all though I cannot be too sure,
I've also noticed that one of the spark plugs rubber bracket ( for lack of a better word) wiring seemed bit dodge and when removing it it actually stayed on the spark plug itself but after a bit of fumbling I got it back in but I know I'll need a new one of these,
one last try before I call the mechanic and add it to my list of bills at the moment and this time I continued to press in the key to keep squirting fuel in when it started to die, this kept it running for longer at a higher revs but once I dropped it down to just idle it died again,
i hope ole someone may of exp this type of problem before and could hopefully give me an idea on what it may be,

Boat buyers - beware
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Fri, 2015-06-12 10:26Just a heads up to anyone buying a boat -
I looked at a boat about a month ago with a mate of mine who is looking to upgrade, long story short he did not buy it but i have since found out that the boat we looked at has now been repossessed - so just thought it was worth mentioning given the current enviroment (especially) if you are looking to buy a boat make sure it is not encumburred
A PPSR search (which is not expensive) will tell you if the asset has is held for security against anything
cheers

Transducer placement
Submitted by wez0062 on Fri, 2015-06-12 10:22Hi guys,
a little advise please. I have a Lowrance HDS7, and was wondering about the correct placement of the transducer. The depth display goes to crap if I go over about 10 knots. Should it be just above the line of the bottom of the boat, or just below the bottom.
any suggestions welcome.

Getting Spiked
Submitted by Madmerv on Fri, 2015-06-12 10:21About 3 weeks ago i got a small burn on my thumb while removing a tray from the oven. Just a tiny blister and nothing to worry about.
Around 1 week ago that small blister was really giving me grief. Felt like a pain just on the edge of a nerve.
Yesterday i cut the dead skin away from the area and put a plaster on the tiny exposed area of new skin.
Last night it was annoying me still, so i started to cut the last of the dead skin away from around the edge, and out popped a bit of bone?? WTF..
Looks like this has been in my thumb from mid April when i was fishing in Shark Bay.. Got spiked in the thumb while scaling a Pinkie..

Sand-filled reel rescue
Submitted by 420casts on Thu, 2015-06-11 15:16 Reel got submerged beach fishing for several hours. Full of sand, I de-lined it, and piece by piece carefully removed all the parts and began clearing sand from all the nooks and crannys.
I wanna know what I should do now in terms of oiling it and maintaining it. There isnt any green corrosion-looking shit in there yet, just sand mixed with the oil already in there. A friend mentioned RP-7 / WD40, but I have also heard this is a big mistake. Any thoughts appreciated.

Montebello Island Safari Charter
Submitted by freoboy on Thu, 2015-06-11 13:33Hi Guys,
A group of us are heading up to jump on board this charter again. A couple of spots have opened up on our trip for various reasons.
See details of this awesome charter here:
The special price for one of these spots is $2500 (usually $3000, so no further discounts apply). The dates are Sunday 28th June 2015 (leave from Exmouth) through until Saturday 4th July 2015.
You should come home with a box of quality fillets as well which makes this an absolute bargain.
I have done this charter before and it really is fantastic.
I know it's short notice but PM me if you are interested.
Cheers,
Max

Claremont Jetty- undersize crabs and fish
Submitted by perth fisher on Wed, 2015-06-10 20:37i was just going for a walk along claremont jetty tonight and saw quite a few groups of people crabbing and fishing
they seem to set up the crab nets before dark and stay until 8.30-9.00pm most nights
i saw lots of undersize crabs in buckets and some undersize breams being caught...
when the weather is nice the jetty is quite popular
-i'm sorry, when there are large groups of people down there catching undersize crabs ,etc
i am NOT going to bring out my phone and take pics....
even i know that would be dangerous
WHY IS THIS THREAD LOCKED ?

Ongoing Exmouth Blog
Submitted by tcarroll on Wed, 2015-06-10 18:09Hey guys!
On the long journey from Mandurah to Carnarvon this morning I had plenty of time to think about things!
I am finishing the journey to Exmouth tomorrow and was thinking about attempting to create a day by day post for the trip letting the FW members how I get on each day. A lot of advice has been taken on board from FW members in planning this trip from new gear to Carnarvon stop over accom and potential ground to fish in exmouth to try and get my first Red.
Feel free to follow the post if you wish!
Had a very stress free drive to the Carnarvon Caravan Park today. First question is where are all of the sheep, goats, cows and dead Roos along the north western coastal highway? I passed one goat near Gladstone and didn't see another animal for the whole drive? Also maybe 1 dead Roo. 2 years ago I recall not being able to drive 100m without passing a dead Roo on the side of the road?

Compleat Angler Nedlands - Fiji 2015 Trip - 2 Spots Available!
Submitted by Compleat Nedlands on Wed, 2015-06-10 13:25We've just had 2 spots become available for a trip we are running to Fiji in October (22nd - 30th). We've based it on the peak tidal movement period (26th) for the best fishing!
Last year was fantastic - the action was constant with GTs, Maori Wrasse, Coral Trout, Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna etc. all boated. We had some very large fish lost and a few surprises like free swimming sailfish/wahoo and big Dolphon fish! It was nice at the end of the day when you were fully stuffed to walk 30 seconds back into a 5 star resort and be pampered with awesome meals and more than a few drinks!
We're looking at expressions of interest at this stage with the total cost somewhere around the $4000 mark - $3000 for 7 nights accomodation, 6 full days fishing, food, airport transfers etc - basically everything except booze. Flights are around the $1100 mark.
If you're interested drop us an email at and we'll send you out the full package details or ask any questions you like here! I'll leave you all with a few photos from last years trip!
