What do you do when the weather sucks
Submitted by clogwog on Fri, 2014-01-31 17:12Looks like the weather is going to be shit for offshore fishing this weekend, could not get out last sat so that's two weekends in a row of no fishing, gotta say that I am getting a little Edgie and need something to satisfy my fishing urge, might go crabbing, wondering what others do whilst the weather is shit.

Swan Tailor?
Submitted by shorething on Fri, 2014-01-31 10:24I've enjoyed quite a few great sessions on land based river tailor around canning bridge area in late Nov/Early Dec. First year I've tried it and have really loved it, especially since it's less than 10mins from home. Always getting 5-10 and maxing out at 40 once, though only getting a handfull over size. Was awesome fun!
However the last few times i've hit up this area at sunset on a high-ish tide I've not had one single hit... Wondering if anyone can point me in a general area that has got some land-based tailor lately that I can give a crack? Those late afternoon sunset lure sessions are really nice but they are a lot better with at least one fish haha. Also more than happy to tag along with someone should they want some company!
Cheers!

Last years PBs and this years goals
Submitted by Super peg on Thu, 2014-01-30 21:32Hey guys, with the new year well on the way and last year a fading memory I'm curious as to what personal bests people succeeded in their desired species and their goals they have set themselves for the coming years,
I guess I'll start
56.5cm tailor - new goal is 60cm
36.5cm Black bream - new goal is 40cm
55cn Flathead - new goal is 60cm
33cm yellow fin whiting - new goal is 35cm
also I'm setting myself a goal of my first sambo, snapper, mulloway and bronzie
All of these landbased
I owe a lot of these captures to a few fellow fishers I met through this site
being new to Perth they showed me some new ground which has helped a lot ( cheers lads)
Everyones got different plans so I'm interested in what everyone's planning for the year to come

Exmouth Billfish Lure Spread
Submitted by 22Tango on Thu, 2014-01-30 21:04Being an Exmouth virgin I would have to say I'm losing sleep at night with 2 x 10 day trips I've got coming up in March/April pretty we'll either side of Gamex and the AIBT. I'm towing the tug up there and am currently in the process of accumulating some game gear.
The question I'd like to post is "what would be the first 4 lures you'd put out in your spread if you were targeting small blacks and sails on 8-10kg gear in say decent conditions under 10knts?" It would be great to know brand, colour and even the position in your spread. Hopefully we'll get a bit of mileage out of this that we can all learn from.
PS Happy to drop a carton by anyone's place if they could spare a couple of hours sharing their successful experiences in Exmouth, especially chasing billfish

Crab scoop for kids
Submitted by Mars2atk on Thu, 2014-01-30 15:50Hi everyone,
I've got the day off tomorrow and was thinking about taking the niece and nephew out for a scoop in the morning before school starts up next week. It'll be their first time scooping for crabs and the little girl is on the small side for a 4 year old. I'm a bit worried she won't be able to handle the weight of a regular scoop even after I cut the handle nice and short for her. Does anyone know if there are any plastic versions around or alternative options for her? I'm sure the boy can handle the metal versions, he's 7, or 7 & 3/4 according to him!
Thanks.

Barcrusher
Submitted by Gonad Man on Thu, 2014-01-30 13:52Hey Guy's,
Looking at downgrading my boat size and changing from glass to ali (nope havent lost my mind!) Current boat is a Leeder Tomcat, great boat but heavy and a lump to handle on solo trips. I predominately fish the south west / south coast region of WA where ramps in the more out of the way places can be average at best and surge and rocks dont favour a glass boat. I'm leaning towards a Bar crusher 680 in either the cuddy or hard top model mainly due to tow weight, ease of launch / retrieve, forgiving nature of ali on rocks and from what I've heard the bar crushers perform quite well. Does anyone own either of these models that can give me some feedback as to their performance? I like the look of the cuddy but dont want to get seriously wet and the hardtop looks quite high so wondering if this gives the boat a tippy feel.
Obviously I dont expect them to ride anything like the Tomcat but am happy to forgo some comfort to be able to launch and handle the boat in some average area's or by myself when required.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

WA entitled to cull sharks
Submitted by WSHN4FSHN on Thu, 2014-01-30 10:57I know this topic has been done to death but this is a very good article in the Australian so I thought I'd share it. I'm pro shark "management strategies" not a cull, and this article highlights some very valid points in support of the governments policy. The governments action shouldn't have even made front page news as this method has been used on the east coast for decades. I'm open to correction but as far as I can tell the ecosystem on the east coast is doing just fine...and so is everyone else!! Hope the link works ok.

Reef beach weekend
Submitted by Rob b on Wed, 2014-01-29 08:46Well headed up to reef beach over aus day weekend for a fish and didn't dissapoint, as soon as we got there we headed to the most eastern side of the beach where it was more protected and set up camp. Once a feed and a drink, went out and flicked some lures over the shallow reef, skippy and herring everywhere great fun light rods and k-mart $2 minnows.
day2 headed to a rock off the beaten track for a fish and soon as the baits touched the water they were getting smashed by big tailor, skippy and tarwine and a couple of big runs but was busted off. Kept a feed and just had a ball catch and release until we ran out of mulie. On the walk out we noticed on the other side of the rock some poor bastards ute lost to the ocean didn't look like it been there too long.
