My Father-in-Law wants his arms stretched

Hi all,

my father-in-law has been over from the UK for 2 months and is going back on Friday.

A manic work schedule and crap winds in-between have only seen us out on the water twice on our short trip down Busso way.

A job postponement has seen me get today off, so we're heading out now from HILLARYS.

He wants to catch "a big strong fish" so I figured it'd be good to watch him cry trying to get in a decent sambo (he's soft)...... Without getting sharked.

Has anyone been having any luck in closer or are they all out deep now ?

This will be his last chance for a few years, so any heads-ups will be greatly appreciated.

i'll be sure to post a vid of him squealing if it comes off :P

Dizz.

Exmouth & Coral Bay - Crew needed and Accommodation Available

Hey everyone.

Im doing my yearly trip to Exmouth (25/4 - 16/5) and Coral Bay (17/5 - 31/5) - House booked at both.

The usual deckies aren't available this year for the first week 25/4 - 3/5, I'm looking for keen fishos who want to come along with me.

There is also accommodation and deckie spots available for the other 2 weeks I'm in Exmouth and the 2 weeks in Coral Bay. This might suit someone who has there own boat and crew as both houses have room for another boat.

I thought I would just put it out there and see whos interested.

Post here or PM me for more info.

Montes pearl farms. Why did they close?

After going to the montes a few times and searching on google. I still can't find a decent answer to why a place with 100years of pearling history and so many old  pearl farms but now has nothing. Evan dampier had pearl farms at some stage. Sounds like that would of been a dream job quite a few years ago. Any info would be much appreciated, thanks

rigging for trolling for macks

 Hi all,

Will be doing some trollign for pelagics in the near future and asking for advice on the rigging.

I run 25lb braid on overhead reels ( pflueger, shimano - love to get a marquesa 16)  and I understadn that the lack of stetch in the braid can be a disadvantage when trolling for pelagics as that means more lsot fish from hooks being pulled ( ? or gear being pulled overboard).

I have a fluorocarbon leader tied to my braid - usually slim beauty to bimini twist int eh braid - about 2 rod lengths.

I would like to get opinions as to whether this f/c leader has sufficiant stretch to overcome the problems associated with braid for trolling?

I am suspecting that it is not adequate and that I may need to have a mono leader of say 40pound of say 20 metres tied to braid on reel side and to wire swivel  -> wire trace on lure side.

New to this style of fishing ( usually bottom bouncing or floaters) so thankfule for any pointers.

Separate question: when underspoooling the braid with mono, do you use mono the same poundage as the braid or the same diameter, or "whatever"?

Thanks

Sunday Hmmmm

Glimmer of hope on the horizon for Sunday to get the boat out.

Will be watching the forecast like a hawk later in the week, us Metro (Mon - Fri working) boys need a break from this dismal wind

Lancelin Charter

Hey all, does anybody know of a charter mob that will operate out of Lancelin? Heading up in March for an extended boys weekend, and wouldn't mind getting some fishing in, but don't fancy the idea of getting up around 3.00 to make it to Jurien.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Cheers,

BD

Shallower / closer FADs - metro area

Asked the question of Recfishwest if consideration is being given to allocating RFBL funds towards deployment of FADs closer to shore in the metro area for use by smaller vessels.  Got a very prompt and promising response, which I have attached below.

Bream jigs, soft plastics or lures?

I was just wondering for bream what do you think is best? Lures, soft plastics or jigs? Please name the brand name below.

An interesting read

Hi Gents. Found this read on fb not sure if its been on this site at all.

Break off - what did it?

Just after some thoughts on what may have caused this. Went for a bream flick this morning up around Woodbridge with the wife and kid. Caught a few, dropped a few - all small up to about 25cm.

Cast out, within a minute or two the familiar nibbles of a bream. There was a bit of a more serious tug - not big, but just enough to move the sinker (I was fishing with a tiny ball sinker). Went to reel in the few inches of slack line (as I had been doing all morning whenever the same thing happened) - but the slack didn't end. There was a clean break in my main line.

I'm using 6lb braid with a running ball sinker to swivel, then a flouro leader to a size 6 hook.

On inspection, the main line is still smooth with no signs of having come into contact with a rough surface. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that the knot from my main line to the swivel failed. I only use uni-knots - but this has never happened to me before and I know I tied it securely. I'd also landed a fish moments before on the same knot.

Any other thoughts what could be up around those stretches that could cause this to happen?

...and before someone else says it...there were no boats coming through :-p

Cheers

Collie river shark

Talking to a mate at a pissup last night and he showed me a photo he had on his phone. He lives in in Clifton park and the back of his house backs on to the Collie river and the photo was of a dead shark on the bank of the river at the back of his house.
Some body had seen the photo on facebook or some such thing and recognised his house and sent him the pic.
Wondering if any body knows the story behind this. It was apparently a bull shark and to my old alcohol affected eyes it looked about 1.5 to 2m long.

how to change photo and username

Thought i might change my username, as I don't own Ol Yella anymore. Have moved onto a jetski, can't find how or if you can change your username.  Also tried changing the photo which my son put up there, chose the file but there was no uplad button.

Hit save changes and the same stupid cows come back??

The wind was up, the comp had been called off but...................

As everyone would know, the weather was ordinary yesterday.  The MAAC Club had quite rightly called off the monthly comp however at 4.30am it wasn't blowing a gale.  What the hell, why not go out and fish the walls and bommies around Hillarys and when the wind does come up you are very close to home.

I have no tales of great captures (hopefully one day the tailor will be around at sun up) but it was probably one of the the happiest fishing day of my life.  It was the ultimately the day my 8 year old daughter realised her love of fishing and the excitement she showed was infectious.

All in all she caught about a dozen, which were a mixture of parrot, wrasse, trumpeter and toads but the thing was she did it all herself without the help of dad (except the baiting and getting the fish off bit).  Seeing her learning how to play a big parrot after getting busted off previously was priceless.  Top that off with watching the sailing races at close quarters and a run down the alleyways of Hillarys to look at the boats and it was a very nice family morning indeed.

The day was topped off when the MAAC Club indicated that she was allowed to fish next week's competition as a visiting mini-junior.  The squeals of delight when I told her and the next hours talking about what we would do were gold.  Only 6 more sleeps to go.

Crabs

The wife has been giving me grief about getting a feed of crabs. Had no luck in the sound or the river and is not really my thing, i prefer being out wide chasig the bigger stuff. Any way she's busting my nuts about going to mandurah as apparently "anybody with a boat can get a feed". So I suggested a compromise and of we go to the fish shop to "buy" a feed. I put 6 reasonable blues in a bag, take it to the till and the bloke says, with a straight face, that will be $80 thanks. Like f*&k I said.

I'm off to mandurah on friday to get a feed of crabs. Bloody misus. Bet it will be glass and you will all be out wide.

just when i thought they were geting the upper hand

Tailor north mole

Hi everyone. Does anybody know how the tailor are going at the north mole?

Lowrance combo

Well my Northstar 121 has the dreaded white screen of death, so I'm on the search for a new combo.

Ive had a look at the Simrad NSS 12 but not sure about a touch screen.

ive owned a Lowrance in the past (GPS only), and liked it so I'm thinking aabout the

HDS 10 gen2. Would appreciate any feedback

cheers

Is this size ?

This was nearly as good as it got.Would like to have a pic of a big one as well but not to be.
To make it worse my mate lost his Gopro while having a dive.I guess the head straps that come with them are not really good enough for diving.
If anybody finds a Gopro down Bunbury way let me know.

Lock Your Doors

Not fishing related but just a heads up.

Was at a friends house last night in Westminster having a quiet bbq with 10 others at around 10.30 we were all outside in the courtyard, when one of the girls came back from the toilet she came accross somone (non white) who had just walked in the unlocked front door, apparantly they looked at each other he put his hands up and said hello, he had socks on his hands.... and ran out the door

by the time we'd all got outside there was a shitty white car driving off

luckily she did come accross him as we would never had known, there were phones , handbags ,wallets, ipads , keys all lying around..... could easily have taken a few grand in a few minutes.

the bloke was lucky in my opinion because the lads at the bbq would not of called the police if they had caught him, lucky boy...

Just shits me the cheek of someone to walk into a unlocked house with people inside.

have had mates in applecross had the same done (indiginous people this time)

also in karinyup  where lilttle kids were sleeping (4 white lads)

so its every type of person doing this...

just a warning to be vigilant even when your at home......
