Shallower / closer FADs - metro area

Asked the question of Recfishwest if consideration is being given to allocating RFBL funds towards deployment of FADs closer to shore in the metro area for use by smaller vessels.  Got a very prompt and promising response, which I have attached below.

 Hi Randall

Recfishwest recently conducted a survey of recreational fishers to identify where they would like their licence money invested.  This survey identified that there was a need for nearshore habitat enhancement devices such as FADs and for 'dingy reefs' to cater for  a large proportion of fishers whose boats are not suited to travel to the FADs.

From this survey Recfishwest developed some strategic priorities for the next round of recreational Fishing Initiatives Funded projects.  The expression of interest period for 2014 projects is currently open and you can see in the attached document that the first two priority areas would suit your needs. Recfishwest will not know whether anyone submits an application until the expression of interest period closes on the 15th February.

It is unknown whether the large pelagic species that are found on the current FADs would travel to inshore FADs however Recfishwest currently has a project to test some FADs in 135m which if successful may lead to FADs being deployed in increasingly shallower depths.

Recfishwest are aware of the need to develop nearshore accessible fishing for small boats and are actively working towards projects to achieve this.

Certainly do work in shallower water in the north. The ships at anchorage off Dampier hold bait around their anchor chain and prop which draws in the predators.

They are in the 40's.

The Hedland FAD's where in 25-30m and they attracted massive bait schools.

Fuel limitations alone stop me from getting out to the FADs

we used to catch heaps of dollies in 50m in the anchorage (usually around ships anchor chains) in the middle east (still Indian ocean)so no reason why you wouldn't here. It was only certain times of the year though for a couple months, the rest of the time they would be out in 100-150m, which would still be relatively close for Perth.

I wonder if it would have any positive impact by relieving pressure on dermersal stocks?   Perhaps boats would be more inclined to have some lightweight fun on faster growing pelagics rather than bottom bashing?

Down south we catch them at a spot in 60m so I can't see why they wouldn't work in closer. Seen a few while fishing north of Rotto in 20m as well.

Would be great to get a couple of fads down south.

If I recall correctly two of the three old FADS that used to be deployed out off Busselton(two off the Cape, and one off Castle Rock in about 30m) are sitting in the paddock of a former Naturaliste Game and Sport Fishing Club members property.

The third one was lost and then recovered somewhere up north on the coast(Jurien, Geraldton?) by an anonymous person who then demanded a reward(ransom?) for its return to the club. To which the Club refused to do, unfortunately not before finding out exactly who said person was or where he lived. :-(

We schools of dollys under cray pot floats out in the 40s off Cervantes last year.

Sure would be a popular spot if they are put in shallow
water off the metro coast, a few more put north would be good to

Has anyone thrown a lure, SP, or fished a live bait around Fairway Buoy at the entrance to Gage Roads?  Or the Windmills in South Passage, the Sound or Challenger Passage? If so, any luck?

Leeuwin Curent

Mon, 2014-02-03 20:25

I think that the Idea of shallower FADs is great but the current FADs except for one (Club Marine?) are positioned along the edge of the Leeuwin current which is the crucial part of making them successful.

The warm waters comming down from Indonesia bring the plankton that feed the smal pelagic fish, like pilchards & anchovies, which in turn get eaten by bigger & then bigger pelagic fish.

May find this a little more indepth on Leeuwin Current.

Interesting.  My (limited) experience is that even closer in, and in depths 40 m or less there is still a southerly set (water movement) at least on the surface.  I have noticed that even at times of light easterly or even light south westerly winds.  Which to me means the current has more of an influence even closer in.

There are a few different currents that run around, but these lesser currents I don't think hold the fish to the same extent as the Leeuwin. If you go to the FADs you will notice the the current really pushes the FAD bouy a lot harder than closer inshore currents. Looks rather strange out in the open ocean having a strong current in calm waters.

They're positioned

Tue, 2014-02-04 20:36

In basically the same position each season give or take a small distance dependant on deployment, current, if they've been hit etc.

Should be clearly marked on your plotters overlay map (navionics/Cmap/blue chart)
