20-40m NOR - desert?

Quick question for those of you fishing between Hillary's and Mindarie - have you found any decent ground between the 20m contour behind the 3 mile and the 40m contour? I have been putting as much time as I can on the water to locate good ground and have found loads in the 40's. There's obviously loads of structure along the 3 mile, but apart from the Gemini I have not found any structure between the 20m and 40m contours.

Is this a complete underwater desert or is there good ground to be found there?

Can you net prawns in Broome?

Just wondering if anyone has caught any prawns around Broome area? I noticed they have been netted at Port Headland so hopefully theres a spot for them further north!!

Trailer boat Facilities

How does the average trailer boat user feel about the current situation for boating in Perth and its surrounds.

I know the Ramp's at RockingHam and Mengals bay are very good, The one at Cockburn /Woodmans point is excellent,leeuwin On the river, not much parkng and expensive, The Hillarys marina, this was built in 1987 (about) and was for the Northern suburbs users. but with the advent of the commercial developments ,The shops,Pub and beaches it is becoming more difficult to find a parking space  on a real good weather weekend. I have asked several people and some say they always find parking easy as they are on the water before 8.30/9.00,but what of the people who have kids sports or jobs that mean they cannot get there until 11.30 or after 12.00 noon, as this is when cars are able to be parked free of charge and one car will take up a bay meant for car & trailer.

I know that a lot of the time the designated trailer/car parking is not full,but when we get those real magic days and it is busy people turn up after 12.00 and are not able to park. I think that being it was built for  trailer boat recreational users, so no one should be allowed to park a car without a trailer until after 2.30pm, and also those that do park there should also have to pay a nominal fee, say half the boat launching one for the upkeep and maintenance of this facility.

The next one is Ocean Reef which is going to undergo some major disruption when the new marina starts, (if it starts) and then Mindarie, which is a good ramp but is also under pressure  from users. then the debacle at Two Rocks and we know of the problems faced there by those who have written here recently.

The Government has put up Boat rego fees, Trailer license fees, fishing from a boat fees but where in the hell have they actually improved the situation for the ordinary trailer boat person. I will sit back and see what the members on this site think.

Land based fishing in Broome??

All,

We are heading up to Broome in the coming weeks to live. My son and I love fishing and cant wait to try something new as we are from Tasmania. Fishing down here is great offshore but land based isnt great. Can anyone give us some information on what we can do from beaches, rocks, jetties etc in Broome? We will be living near Cable Beach.

Any info would be awesome. Thanks

Kayaking questions

Hi,
i recently got in possesion of a escape kayak, it has a rod holder at the back and i was wondering whether or not i would be able to use it around palm beach. Would the kayak be able to handle it? Also, should i troll or should i be using bait and could i also try squidding? This is my first ever kayak and i really want to test it out :)

Thanks,
Fisherman Mikey.

P.S this is what my kayak looks like, http://www.escapekayaks.com/

Popped my GT cherry today! - offshore bali

Went out with Adhek charters. Specialise in sport fiishing fo world record sie GTS and jigging for dogtooth, ruby snapper amberjack. Great lad awsome time, found out he hand crafts all his stick baits/poppers and they are sold world wide. Pitty about certain tackle companies copy his lures, for shape size etc etc......

apart from the heat and the missus and i battling bali belly, we had  a ball!! learning new techniques jigging in extremem currents etc etc. Boy i never understood the fuss with these fish till now, ive caught blue marlin, tuna to 96kg, and now this guy is up there with the best of em. Pound for pound they are one serious fighting fish, back is aching, hands are cramping. Would of had over 400 casts today, and in the afternoon it finally payed off! All fish were released and swam off well!

Missus got a 9 kgish small one as well

32 kg GT! stoked

I am one happy man

Good witch doctor length

How far out should I troll my witch doctor if I'm chasing tuna mackies etc.....

Broken rod help

So I was down the beach early today, using my favourite 16ft 3 piece Daiwa Sensor Surf, fighting a ray. With about 10 metres to go, my rod decides it's had enough and snaps at the bottom of the top section. I was surprised but thought it was either replaceable or fixable at my local store. Went in there about an hour ago to be told that Daiwa no longer sell rod sections and graphite isn't repairable. Pretty shattered.
So this is a call to anyone who may be able to help. If you or someone you know can fix this rod for me, or by some random chance has the same rod or spare top section, please let me know.

towball

howdy all

i bought a jeep today, but it wasnt untill i got it home that i realised that i cant hook up my boat , due to the tow ball sitting underneath the spare tyre rack.

i am wondering am i able to buy a tow ball with a longer tounge on it, and would it change any of the manufactury rating for the current one or insurance ???

couple days mixed bag

 went on a little road trip got pulled over by the police 1/2 way there got a yellow sticker an a red sticker on the boat

Boat retrieving etiquette

Hi guys,

Launched my boat on Saturday morning in that mess  that was two rocks. We were there at 5am and only had to wait for 10 boats. cool!!!

When we came back in at 3pm there was approximatley 10 boats waiting to reetrieve. I had noticed the boat we follwed in was waiting so i waited to see what he did. We waited about 20 minutes and the bloke we followed in went and dropped off his mate at the jetty. He went and  got his car and then waited for his turn in the car que. I then followed suit and dropped off our driver. the bloke got his boat out and nothing was said to him.

When our car was driven down the ramp I drove the boat up to the ramp. just as i got next to the jetty WHAM. A bloke in a boat behind me let me have it. You D..Head!! Who are you to jump the que, you w....er, etc etc WHAT THE??? it had now been 35 min at least since we came in.

Not sure if i am in the wrong or not?? What is the right way to retrieve your boat?? havent had any problems since i bought my boay but that was only 2 months ago.

Can you drop your driver off?? or do you need to wait and push the boat up against the jetty and then go get the car.

Would love to hear your thoughts for next time.

Cheers

Over Nighter At Wilbinga

Planning on doing an overnighter soon up to wilbinga

I have a Nissan Patrol which is perfect for 4wd but im not too experienced with the soft sand.

Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of where to take off from Read on the forum that Two rocks has a spot where you let down your tyres? if anyone knows that would be much appreciated :)

As i dont have anything to let down my tyres or pump them up again.

And was wondering if there is any weed around atm?

Cheers would be much appreciated if anyone could help

really dont feel like losing my 4wd and hopefully get into some decent fish

early morning fish

Thinking of heading out early tomorrow off Mindarie. Weather reports look pretty ordinary but the same has applied for the last couple of days and each morning when I get up it looks pretty good (granted I am about 6kms from the beach).

Has anyone been out early in the last couple of days and if so how was it? The boat needs a workout so thinking of chasing a tuna or spanaird.

halco laser pro 160 xdd 6m - proper towing point - ex halco marketing manager

My search function doesn't appear to be working so i hope i am not repeating something that has already been covered.

i have purchased a halco laser pro 160 xdd 6m, and i have just noticed that it has two towing rings, one on the front of the hard body, and one in the middle of the bib.  the latter looks to me to a) not be a strong enough point to withstand a big mackie, and b) wouldn't get the lure as deep.  and i suspect the former would be hard wired to the hooks in the middle and the tail of the lure.  this all confuses me as to why there is a towing point in the middle of the bib at all.

any ideas, suggestions?  will be trolling for macks and tuna around monkey mia and steep point.

The real TACKLE HQ jigging day 10/2/12

Firstly I would like to say that Whitey from Seasports Charters is a true blue legend!! He bent over backwards to put the boat in the best possible position each and every drift....although the fishing was hard going the fish that were caught were pretty impressive. I took a peek at the sounder numerous times to see massive amounts of fish right below where we were fishing....however, they were not interested in our jig offerings.

Big ups to Whitey for trying to do everything he could on the day to get fish on board and answer questions regarding demersal jigging and its finer points---I cannot fault the man.

However, “The Tackle HQ Jigging Tutorial Day” should be renamed “The Tackle HQ Sales Tutorial Day.”

The following is in response to Luke Ryans previous fishwrecked post regarding the Jigging Day.....

What do you get for your money? You will receive FREE jigging advice from one of Tackle HQ’s professional staff - (The advice that Luke gave was how to Jig the corner of the boat, or jig next to Whitey for the whole day whilst the rest of the novices figured out how to jig for themselves);

Knot demonstrations on the day - (the knot demonstration was a PR knot however you need to buy $500+ worth of additional gear to tie it---flash Bobbin ($300) leg tensioned line holder ($250) but you better not try tying it with out first buying the correct gear from Tackle HQ first.....dont bother buying cheap bobbins from somewhere else they wont tie the same knot as the Tackle HQ one...);

making your own assist hooks - (3 out of the 8 guys on board saw it);

Correct gear setup - (More like criticizing the quality of your gear ie:- brand of braid, swivels, solid rings, jigs, hooks, etc...if it isn’t Shout or Decoy you may as well throw it overboard);

Demonstrations on how to jig correctly with the gear you are using - (Not once did ANYBODY get any sort of Demonstration on how to use their gear. All we received was criticism about not having the gear that Tackle HQ sells and tackle that was purchased from elsewhere was considered inferior. Luke has named EVERY one of the jigs that you can purchase from Tackle HQ in this post.... but not the ol cheap and nasties purchased elsewhere.);

Coaching throughout the day to help you land that big dhuie - (Never happened);

Soft plastic demonstrations - (Didn’t see one – and yes there were people using plastics during the day) ;

and also tackle rigging - (Never happened);

Pretty much you are going to get a tutorial day of jigging for the standard price of a day charter provided by Tackle HQ, everything you need to know about targeting demersal fish on artificial lures will be covered along with guidance from one of Tackle HQ’s professional staff members onboard seasport charters with legendary skipper Whitey - ( more was learnt from watching and listening to Whitey jigging at the top end of the boat.);

This is a great opportunity for the first time jiggers out there that want to learn how to jig for demersal fish, even if you have never caught a fish on a lure before this is a MUST attend day!! Our Tackle HQ representative will also photograph your prized catch so you can brag about it to all your mates. - (Check. Photos were taken);

Soft plastics and Jigs only! - (Check. No bait was used for the day).

In conclusion:

1. If you are keen to go out for a top day of fishing and want to learn heaps about Jigging for Demersal fish, head out with Whitey at Seasport Charters for a day out you cannot fault.

2. If you want to be criticized about how inferior your fishing gear is and go to a Tackle HQ Sales Pitch, then book a day with Luke.

I hope Tackle HQ take this constructive criticism on board and not make the same mistakes for the next “Jigging Tutorial Day” they organise.

The Sambo King.
