Research for near shore species
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2011-10-20 08:50Research for near shore species
Portfolio: Fisheries
- Research to examine status of critical recreational fishing stocks
- Funding injection boosts extension of first stock assessment of critical species
- Science to lead continued sustainable management for future
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the new grant follows nearly two years of research into herring and tailor stocks in the West Coast Bioregion by the Department of Fisheries.
“These two species are critical to recreational anglers, especially in the metropolitan area,” Mr Moore said.
“The additional funding will allow similar information for whiting on the West Coast, as well as extending work to the South Coast to provide a complete picture of the status and connectivity of the near shore stocks in Western Australia’s temperate waters.”
Research so far has involved researchers from the Department of Fisheries working with key stakeholders, including Recfishwest and the WA Fishing Industry Council, to collect data and set up sampling programs for these species.
The work will include modern micro-chemical and genetic techniques being applied to determine the connectivity of West Coast and South Coast stocks of these popular species and the link between adults and juvenile fish to explore whether predictive forecasting of relative abundance is possible.
The Minister said similar partnerships with non-departmental groups and key stakeholders would also be a feature of the extension of this project to complete the assessment of whiting stocks.
“There are significant social, economic and ecosystem benefits from the State’s near shore fishery stocks and assets, so to ensure these benefits are maintained for future generations we need to know more about these species, which are regarded as the life blood of recreational fishing,” the Minister said.
- $660,000 in NRM funding in July 2009 for research of near shore species stocks
- A report on stage 1 of the project is being independently peer-reviewed before release

Who's boat is their 'shed'???
Submitted by randall df223 on Wed, 2011-10-19 19:45They say, "every man needs his shed, every man needs a place to escape".... unfortunately my shed is so full (and smells like the bait that I am currently salting), that it ain't the greatest place to escape to! So when the kiddliewinks are settled for the night, I'll be retiring to my 'shed', which is my five metre plate ally runabout parked in the driveway, with a glass of wine to have some serious boat appreciation time and to work out what i will be spending my hard earned wages on next. new springs (probably the priority) or a deck wash (more fun installing and using)!
Is your boat your 'shed'?

Rays
Submitted by Oracle on Wed, 2011-10-19 19:12Hi all,
Got a friend of mine who does a lot of beach fishing - so not my specialty at all! Of late, he's been doing pretty well and getting a few rays as he mainly fishes late night. So I've got a few questions....
1. Are they any good to eat? I've heard that the wings are awesome
2. How do you "treat" them to eat of they are good.
anything on rays would be great.

Good all round O/H reel??
Submitted by Braxi on Wed, 2011-10-19 18:34Hi,
I have a Tyrnos 16 that has been great for trolling and bottom bouncing. Holds plenty of line and a fair amount of drag to turn some solid fish. Has anyone else tried anything that is similar or better in that price range? I am happy with that but my mate is looking to get one and was asking what else was around. They are pretty well priced for the $250 from Motackle.

Skinning sharks?
Submitted by Aaron Santos on Wed, 2011-10-19 15:44Hi all.
Ive done a bit of a search on methods of skinning sharks and didnt really find to much info. While chasing snapper a few of weeks ago in the sound a mate on board caught a nice gummy about 1200 long. we bled it, cut its head, fins , tail off, gutted it straight away washed it out and straight on the ice slurry. the biggest problem we had was removing the skin when we got home. So my question is, what is the easiest method to remove sharks skin?
It tasted beautiful so we've decided to target a few more little sharks while the ban is on.
All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Are Sharks seasonal?
Submitted by Jarlaxle on Wed, 2011-10-19 14:09I've decided to focus on my Land based Shark fishing, What i'm wondering is does anyone know, or know where I might find information about the seasonal movement of sharks?
I know that the snapper spawning attracks its share of GWS, but is there a seasonal pattern for say Bronzys or Spinners etc that they might be on the bite more than others?
Thanks in Advance

Best Reds advice??
Submitted by Braxi on Wed, 2011-10-19 11:40Hi,
I just got my new boat and will be heading out in the hunt for red emperor. What have been your most successful rigs/baits? I have used the old paternosta rig and have landed a few but nothing sensational. Any particular ground to look for on the sounder. I have heard that not right on the reefs but a little off is the best way to locate them. Any ideas? Cheers.

Stella 8000 SW questions
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2011-10-17 22:15Just a simple question or 2.
By exploring found a spot with good GTs. Not sure about sizes but what I could see following the lures was some "interesting" looking ones (chasing trout in a likely looking spot).
Now I only (yet) have a SW8000 (Not PG). Can I have a go at these with the 8000, because as far as the specs the 10 is only basically a bigger spool and same spec's. Ie only more line capacity. Only have PE 3-4 on it ATM, so will have to upgrade to PE 5-6. If I get floored, would or can you go up to PE8? Now that is borderline, and I wouldn't risk the reel in a capacity it wasnt designed for.
Have a collection of lures at my disposal, last count about 100odd (yes a lure junkie, everytime I go to the shop to get some gear off any sort I grab a new lure or 2 - mostly what I hear about from FW stories) and have some R2S dumbells and other odd and sod pops. Nothing like the $100+ jobs, and I am sure I would sacrifice a few.
Bit reluctant to upgrade to SW18000 because I would never use this for anything else, and spend $100+ on GT poppers and sticks etc. Would rather gently venture into it and see what happens.
But then not willing to kill the 8 either as I just love it.
Not a techno Junky on all the specs etc. A rod and reel has their design and function, and thats how I use them.
I have a saragosa 14000 but I am positive the SW8000 would pull it backwards in a rush.
Cheers

Latest custom rod
Submitted by Bunny on Mon, 2011-10-17 19:30I got Paul Herron to build my wife a heavy rod for chasing Reds in the rough stuff. Once again he's done an awesome job.
The blank is a Black Hole Cape Cod special 250 g. The carbon wrapping of this blank is beautiful so there is no need to get too fancy with the build.
The colour scheme was primarily purple and the finish has worked really well. Guides are American tackle HTLRS with Holographic rings. The main colour of the ring is purple so it fits the theme well.
Reel seat is a Project X seat from mudhole with a purple gimbal to match.
This is the first ever combo I've fitted out where the reel is cheaper than the rod. I picked the Cabo 70 up for just over 100 bucks at a recent sale and it will be interesting to see how it goes. The components cost more than the reel!
I took a couple of loaded up shots with 10 kilos of weight. I doubt the missus will use any more than 8 kilos of drag so this outfit is pretty much unbreakable.
I must admit until recently I was not a huge fan of parabolic rods that bent all the way through the foregrip but for heavy outfits they are a good thing with the fulcrum/lever point being closer to the body for less hurt. The parabolic curve also transfers the load throughout the rod decreasing the breakage risk.
Blank weight was 143 grams and finished rod 394 g. Pretty good considering the heavy Gimbal and reel seat for a rod with so much power. Apparently it can deadlift to 60lbs.
Gotta love the pics of the little one helping daddy with the bend pics. Maybe the weight was more like 9.8 kilos after she had a little play

Early season snapper report (Port Phillip Bay, Victoria)
Submitted by PattyT on Mon, 2011-10-17 18:22So me and my best mate Ben went out for our first bash on the snapper this season in Melbourne. Its still pretty early in the season and the fish dont usually fire up till early november when the water temp hits about 17 degrees, we had heard reports of a few fish getting around so we were pretty confident heading out. We had decided to only use light gear this year to have abit more fun so we packed all our bream and whiting gear and hit the water around 5 30am ready for the 7am tide change.. it was going to be a good day!

The first fish of the 2011 season was a PB for Ben (would of beat mine too) taken on a big pilchard on a 2000 size real and 6lb braid. Weighed in a 6.7kg, unfortunatley was gut hooked so we had to keep it. We ended up getting 5 during this tide change, weighing in from 2.8 to 6.7kg Very good start considering how early in the season it was, the water was only 14.5 degres.

Got my first fish on my new Caldia 2000 combo, great fun on 4lb braid!

Now what happened next is one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed out fishing. Ben had a strike and somehow the fish managed to pull the rod out of the racks before either of us could get to it. Anyway, we were both shattered and our great morning had been ruined. Anyway, Ben didnt give up.. He spent the next 5 minutes casting out and retriving slowly along the bottom and sure enough he brought back some line and his rod, he got the fish too... here is the culprit! Unbelievable.

We ended up getting 9 fish ranging from 2kg to 6.7kg, kept 3 and realesed the rest. Was a cracking day out on the water and a huge result considering the time of year. Think this season is going to be the best yet and im really looking forward to battling some more reds on the lighter gear.

Ended up with a good feed as well...

Cheers

mono to mono knot
Submitted by pembo6 on Mon, 2011-10-17 17:43Had a quick search but couldn't find much on this.... maybe I'm blind??
After recommendations 4 the best knot to connect 30lb mono mainline to 50-100lb mono leader.
Is it best to have knot before or after guides? Ideally I want a long leader but I expect it won't cast through guides well??
Thanks

Higher than normal risk of cyclones this season
Submitted by tailor marc on Mon, 2011-10-17 15:50Anyone want to take a punt and guess when the first one will form off W.A?
"SEVERE weather experts are warning North-West communities to batten down now for an above average number of cyclones this season.
Two cyclones are expected to hit the coast, with a ‘significant risk’ of at least one severe tropical cyclone impacting WA this year, according to forecasters at the WA Bureau of Meteorology.
Coastal communities between Broome and Exmouth face the highest cyclone risk of anywhere in Australia and the season starts on November 1.
"Climate models are trending toward another La Nina episode, which would lead us to expect a slightly higher than average number of tropical cyclones, however, no two La Nina events are the same,” BOM Severe Weather Services manager Andrew Burton said.
La Nina conditions are where lower sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean create a see-saw of pressure, triggering thunderstorm and cyclone activity.
"While this La Nina may be weaker than the last, this doesn't mean Western Australia can expect fewer tropical cyclones than the previous season," Mr Burton said.
Last year, where the La Nina phenomenon was much stronger, WA experienced an average season with five tropical cyclones off the northwest coast.
The strong La Nina conditions caused an above average number of tropical lows which didn't intensify into tropical cyclones.
"For most people a bad season is one when their community is directly affected. Last season's severe flooding in the Gascoyne was not directly associated with a tropical cyclone, but is an example of how tropical lows can also cause significant flooding," said Mr Burton."
