D9 sounder pics on new 585 with M260 1kw

Hi all, went out today to check out how the new sounder looks.  Went to the D9 and took some pics of what was down there. I have never been here before so never seen what it looks like on the screen. Is this what other people see, and does it look like there is any fish down there.(note, at this stage I hadn't done any fine tuning on settings).

Also, some advice please, we also went to Herring bay, behind Garden Island, and anchored up in 1.3m of water, and every now and then the screen filled up with activity in water below boat. There was definitley no fish under boat visually, and no bubbles or turbulence. What could this be?

Overall, very happy with sounder and ducer.

Appreciate any comments.

My experience today at the local seafood market! Qingdao china. and some tackle info.

For those of you who do not know, i am currently in China at the moment, more specificaly a fishing town called Qingdao, in the Shandong provence.

After hearing about the exotic fresh seafood markets in Qingdao, i caught a taxi 7km from my house to the markets (cost me a whole $2.5) and arrived at a scene of total chaos. There was screaming, yelling, blood flying from chopping boards, and a stench i could only describe as leaving a block of mulies in your esky for a week. I was a bit nervous approaching the displays, as sellers were very pushy and my chinese is very patchy and broken. There were people yelling at everyone, asking all sorts of questions and making all sorts of statements such as "what would you like today?" and "all this produce is fresh from this mornings boat" to which i did not know how to reply!

The whole seafood market would have been at least the size of the Morley galleriea, or a similar sized shopping center, and everyone sold all different species of fish, shellfish, invertabrates, and unidentifiable marine organisms. Upon reaching the first display, i noticed that i could not recognise one species of fish, although i could link them to species we find in australia. they had a fish that looked like it was crossed between a flathead and a flounder, although it had no tail what so ever, it was almost like a elongated oval shaped plate, with scales and a mouth. after walking deeper into the market, i started to recognise many species i was farmiliar with, such as pink snapper, sargent bakers, yellowtail kings, spanish mackeral, yellowfin tuna and big flounder. one pleasant suprising aspect of the market was the price of the fish. One kilo of pink snapper fillets was 25 yuan, which equals out to be $4.5 a kilo, so im planning on a omega 3 rich, fishy diet for the remainer of my stay :)

Another interesting aspect of the market was that the fish on display were not on ice, or any sort of refrigeration device, which begs the question, How do they keep the fish fresh??

Well the answer is, people in china are very sceptical on the freshness on sea food, and just because a seller says the fish is fresh, not many people will believe their word. so in order to prove the freshness of a fish, all specimens are kept alive in large tanks, and at all times there will be a freshly killed fish on a chopping board, with the heart still beating and organs pumping, to show the freshness of a fish.

before leaving the market, i bought a kilo of snapper, which i will cook up tonight :)

On the way home i stopped by at a string of tackle shops.

The first store i entered, had pretty average fishing reels that i have never seen before or heard of, although they were all very cheap.

The next store i entered, looked a little bit more upmarket, and after looking around, my eyes layed upon a Stella. i asked the store staff if i could have a closer look, and upon inspection, it had no writing in it, no lables, no brands, no line capacity, no numbers or letters on the enitre reel, all it had was 5000sw and japan written on the reel seat. It felt like my stella at home, sounded my stella, but had no brand or writing. The price on it was 2000 yuan which is $370, so i dunno guys, whats your opinion on this? The exact same story for saltigas, and all high end shimano and daiwa gear. im thinking of buying one, but not 100% on the quality, although it all looks and feels legit!

There were also more lures, stickbaits, poppers, squid jigs you could poke a stick at, all at rediculously low prices. They had Daiwa pirates for 20 yuan each ($4) maria lures at 20 yuan each and other wierd brands that i've never heard of.

Sorry there were no pics. I tried to get a few snaps, but the sellers got very offended when i tried to take pictures of their fish. Dont know why. and sorry if it was a bit long or boring, just felt the need to share.

cheers guys

Shark Cage For Hire,,,

Just found this listed on gumtree ...thought it might interest those seeking a addrenalin rush ...I imagine you would need some heavy winching gear....whether you just set it at the bottom and wait for a random shark could be a bit of wait...the go might be to wallpaper it with sambos first

Goodluck and post some pics up thereafter...LOL

Has anyone fished the Madeline Shoals off Dampier???

 Hi,

I was just looking at the Charts and the area around Madeline Shoals looks like it could be some promising ground. But its a fair distance. Has anyone fished it? Is it worth the trip? Cheers.

Newbie on board

Hi everyone.  I'm new here. LOVE fishing.  But only been into it or 6 months. I have a 5.2m savage craft with a mercury 115 2 stroke with 90L fuel.

I launch from Hillary's. What depth should I look for along 3mile?  I want to hit sambos king fish etc or just what ever else I can grab.  Mostly into catch and release but will keep 2 fish per session.

I have a lot of luck with good sized skippy in the 40cm plus range normally. But me and the missus are getting over it.

I understand the demersal fishing ban is in place. But what sport and/or table fish are readily accessible not too far out?

I understand people don't want to share coordinates. But a general guide would be great.

Thanks for your help in advance. And happy fishing!!!!

Any Info would be appreciated. Cheers

Has WA gone crazy?

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm getting really really tired of the hysteria towards sharks in WA because of recent attacks.

As far as I'm concerned if you fish, swim, surf or dive then sharks are part of our sea life we have to learn to live with.

Some years the currents and temperatures along with other migrating sea species will see an increase in sharks or a decrease. The seasons are never the same.

I think some people here in WA have forgotten a few things, or have never been taught a few things, and these are what a lot of us have known from young or been told when we were younger. And that is;

You never swim in the water between seasons: Why? - Because the water is often murky, currents and rips are changing and it can be dangerous.

You never swim in the water at sunset or sunrise: Why? - Because these are the peak feeding times for sharks close to beaches.

I know a lot of surfers and they all tell me the same thing, "It's the risk we take at this time of year"

To me it's common sense that you don't go in the water when it is murky, when it is the change of seasons, when Whales are migrating and when there are a lot of Seals about.

This hunting a Killer Shark down just to save the WA tourist dollar is absolutely ridiculous.

I fish nearly every weekend out of Bunbury and when's the last time there was a Shark attack there? I can tell you though that I often have small Blue Sharks, and Hammerheads and whalers swim round my boat and often not more than a few 100 metres from shore and it's been this way for the last 5-6 years, but that wouldn't worry me going in the water in the middle of summer between daylight ours when no seals are around and the water is clear.

The media has a lot to answer for and this subject has been blown way out of proportion, Sharks have their place in the eco-system as Crocodiles do, as snakes do etc etc.

Over it!

Fishing Esperance Boat Hire

 Hi Guys,

I am heading down to Esperance for the week before Christmas and dont really want to tow the boat the whole way down there, does anyboady know if there is any boat hire places in esperance which have smaller boats, as I dont really want a massive boat for in the bay? I did a google search and could only find one, and they had only one large boat? Surley there must be a dinghy hire place in Esperance?

Cheers,

Josh

How's the weed (ocean variety) around Lancelin for the long weekend?

Going to head up to Lano for some beach fishing this long weekend.

Last Saturday there was a bit of weed around, but was still fishable.

Any reports of how weedy it currently is would be much appreciated.

SW Sambo Session

Headed out yesterday for a sambo jigging session. The weather was the best I had seen it in ages. Glass from the time we left to the time we came home.

Once we reached our destination it took a while to find them but when we eventually did we found them in a big way. We ended up having a two hour session of non stop sambos. Left them still on the bite with sore arms and backs.

Sounder shot of a bait ball surrounded by a few sambos.

The outskirts of the bait ball thick with sambos.

A few pics of the average size fish caught for the day.

A few pics of some rods bent over.

Has anyone had any experience with these two reels?

Would you recommend one over the other for general jig bashing and bottom bouncing?
