camping at warra/quobba
Submitted by Versus on Wed, 2011-11-09 19:48starting to think about next years trip north, just after some advice/opinions. When we go camping we like to be by ourselves, light a fire and that sort of thing. Had a quick run down to the northern part of warra when i was in coral bay earlier this year and it was overrun with caravans :(
so basically wondering if you can get a (mostly) secluded campspot at warra/quobba. will be looking to go about the last week of june-first week of july. Are you allowed to light a campfire? assuming u need to bring own firewood if u can?
lastly we might have a dinghy, mite not, so what would be the best option if we're restricted to landbased? alot of questions i know, thanks in advance. vince

Herring Bay/Garden Island navigation markers
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-11-09 18:43The Department of Transport (DoT) will fast track work to install navigation markers at the entrance to Herring Bay at Garden Island.
DoT Marine Safety Acting General Manager Ray Buchholz said discussions with the local boating community following the removal of unofficial markers last month had resulted in a decision to install new markers as soon as possible.
“Herring Bay was a popular spot for recreational boating. However, the same extensive reef system that shelters the bay also makes it extremely challenging for skippers to navigate into the bay,” Mr Buchholz said.
“The location of the network of new markers is within waters controlled by the Department of Defence which has given approval for the installation.”
Representatives from DoT, the Garden Island Fishing and Aquatic Association (GIFAA), Rockingham Sea Search and Rescue, Boating WA and the Department of Defence were involved in the discussions last week.
Mr Buchholz said the representatives would join DoT officers for an on-water assessment of the area next week to confirm the exact location of the markers.
“It’s hoped the new markers will be in place by Christmas and until then the boating community is urged to navigate the area with extreme caution,” Mr Buchholz said.
“This is a popular destination for recreational boat owners and this project will greatly improve access and safety in the area.”

Cray Pot Hauler (attention to the inventive types)
Submitted by Lamby on Wed, 2011-11-09 18:11Basically when I am not around to pull the jarrah pots, the old boy & his cronies are going to bust a nut or their back, hilariously possibly both! So I have been throwing a few ideas around in my head & even looked at the 'stress free hauler' from south oz which looks great but possibly fairly exy.
I don't want a permanent fixture as such but have looked at the idea of mounting a capstan winch to the gunnel & bending some pipe using the mandrel to form an arm away from the hull & a basic pulley system. Or even a basic pulley system & leaving the winch out of it, they could do with some form of work out the fat gits.
Anyone treaded down this pathway before, seen some interesting threads in other forums on reduction gearboxes but the systems ended up looking like something out of steptoe & son. Seen a few cray pot 'tippers' before but never up close to see the true workings of it, can anyone enlighten me & answer if they are easy for an older gentleman to haul pots up with?
Cheers in advance

PGFC Opening Weekend
Submitted by backlash on Wed, 2011-11-09 07:38Hi All
If you don't already know, Perth Gamefishing Club's opening weekend is this weekend (12-13 Nov)
Details can be downloadede here: www.pgfc.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Flyer-11-10-23.pdf
PGFC are constantly looking out for new members; being a boat owner is not a pre-requisite; in fact there are some boat owners who would fish more if they could get a crew. Usually the costs are surprisingly cheap as compared to charter fishing; you have the normal fuel costs to chip in for, plus any other bait/lre expenses which you would normally incur yourself.
Benefits of joining the club include educational club nights, discounted purchasing power at a variety of selected sponsor's outlets and like-minded fisho's.
If you're interested in joining, membership forms can be downloaded from here: www.pgfc.com.au/about-pgfc/membership/
This season is hopefully going to be better than past season with the Leeuwin current providing early indications of being prevalent once again.
PGFC prides itself on being a tag-and-release club first and foremost; with a presence and added influence with lobbying to protect our colletive fishing future
If you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to contact me via pm or email.
Cheers,
Dave Dubbelboer

I've just got a Saltist LD30 2 speed, so was thinking it'd be an OK reel for this work.
What sort of gear are you lot using ??

trip north. need advice.
Submitted by maccie on Mon, 2011-11-07 18:14hi all. new to the site and just after some advice regarding a trip north. never ventured up that way so am keen to have a look. Unsure where would best suit us. have a 4x4 and a 4.3 50hp boat. would love to get it out but only somewhere safe. anyone recommend a spot that is small boat friendly and produces good fish? maybe past the west coast region to loose this demersal ban. would love to do some good land based fishing to. I guess a spot that if weather permits can launch the boat or if not can fish some ledges or hopefully both. Also not really set up to be roughing it for days on end so near a town would suit better.
any help much appreciated. thanks

Advice for Kayak fishing
Submitted by northwest dreaming on Mon, 2011-11-07 16:38HI everyone,
I recently bought an ocean kayak for fishing and have been decking it out with ropes and clips, for the rods and oars.
Is there any hints about other stowage or securing of gear that people have learnt "the hard way".
Also i plan on using it in the Leeman / Greenhead area...Anyone know of good spots accessable by kayak for some good action??
Thanks.

Coral Bay Trip.
Submitted by Aaron Santos on Mon, 2011-11-07 11:11Hi all, well its been a while waiting and planning but Im off to Coral Bay on friday. 2 4x4s, 2 boats and 7 mates all up. We are taking the boats in hope that the winds will be friendly and we can get out a couple of times or at worst fish the inside of the reef( not in the sancuary zones obviously). Ive done a heap of search's on here finding out all I can about using the south passage. What I was trying to find out especially from people who have done it a few times is, whats the maximum swell height you would use the passage in?
Any other Coral Bay tips would also be appreciated as it my first time up there.
Cheers will post a report when we return, hopefully with some good catches.
