WA’s first artificial reef to be trialled
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2011-11-17 12:10WA’s first artificial reef to be trialled
Portfolio: Fisheries, Regional Development
- $1.86million Royalties for Regions boosts South-West reef project
- Additional $260,000 from recreational fishing licence revenue
- WA gains from 40-years artificial reef experience through MOU
The Liberal-National Government today announced the go ahead for a $2.12million initiative to establish the State’s first artificial reef trial on the South West coast.
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the South-West Recreational Fishing Enhancement Pilot Project was designed to increase available habitat for key fish species.
“If these structures meet their potential, they will benefit the local environment and local communities; complement Western Australia’s robust and adaptive fisheries’ management approach; and help ensure fish stocks are kept sustainable,” Mr Moore said.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the project, funded through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program, would be established at Geographe Bay.
“Geographe Bay is a prime location that could benefit from the installation of purpose-built artificial reef structures,” Mr Grylls said.
“This trial is the first of its kind in WA and has strong community support from the Shire of Busselton and Recfishwest, the peak body representing recreational fishers.”
Recfishwest will work with the Department of Fisheries and the South-West community to identify priority locations for the trial structures.
The project announcement follows yesterday’s signing of an agreement between the State Government and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to share information on the development of artificial reefs and sustainable fisheries management, for mutual benefit.
Mr Moore said the Memorandum of Understanding would allow the Department of Fisheries and Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to identify and harness opportunities for research and development projects and facilitate the transfer of expertise, technology and capacity.
“This agreement represents a unique opportunity for our State to learn and benefit from work the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency has put into artificial reef development as we consider these structures as a potential option to help ensure future fish stocks are kept sustainable. At the same time, the agency will have access to WA advice and expertise on matters related to the management of fish stocks, including monitoring and assessment, fisheries compliance and aquatic biosecurity,” he said.
Mr Moore said the Federal Government’s proposed marine sanctuary within Geographe Bay may prevent it being used as a focal area for the trial.
“The State Government will be making strong representation to the Federal Government to ensure the bay is available for all users, including fishers,” he said.

Sambos in the Swan
Submitted by monstaf1sh on Thu, 2011-11-17 06:58Launched out from Point Walter yesterday and found a bit of structure that to my surprise held a few 50cm+ Sambo's the sight of them got me prety excited and turned my attention of my Bream lures towards these little beasts but unfortunately I could not entice one to have a go at my lure although I did get the attention of 50 blowies.
I tried a fast retieve and fairly fast twitches also the slow roll but got no atention.
Anyone got any ideas on how to hook these sambos? Perhaps a bigger lure? faster retrieve?

Or do I have to go to an aluminium or fibreglass fabricator and get it custom made, which is a lot more stuffing around. All help appreciated, thanks.

Season opener crays
Submitted by tiimmbo on Wed, 2011-11-16 19:08
Had a great couple of days with 4 dives at rotto and a few beers with Lamby and another couple of mates the past couple of days. Quite a few crays about between 10-20m but most of them were berried or tar spots on them. Managed to nab a couple that weren't though so got a couple of early season keepers.
Very enjoyable couple of days on/in the water though.

Best 2500 size reel under $100 ???
Submitted by pembo6 on Wed, 2011-11-16 15:32Ok. I know I'm not gonna get the best reel in the world for this price, but I'm on a strict budget.
I was thinking of the Shimano Sedona. $99. 7kg drag. Nice & strong. I have the 4000 model & it is a great reel for the cheaper end of the market.
My previous 2500 reel ($35 abu) was fine until I caught a few larger fish with it. Now it grinds away roughly.
It will primarily be used for bream, whiting, herring (small stuff). Lures & bait.
Any recomendations of good or bad reels would be appreciated.

theres a couple rivers and estuaries there that im keen to fish, same goes with the beaches. should have a tinny in tow, so can anyone can reccomend which river/estuaries are worth getting out on? keen to try and get my first bream on lure :D
think we'll stick to LB on the beach, again wouldnt mind some reccomendations on wheres good to try. have a 4wd so some slightly more remote places would be great, but probably wont drive miles down the beach as im not that experienced.

exmouth disaster
Submitted by barcelona125 on Tue, 2011-11-15 19:34hey guys
just went up to Exmouth in the school holidays and we caught hardly anything. we fished in every known spot and the biggest fish was a 2 kilo flathead at wapet creek. the only northern fish we caught were a couple of moses perch, a queenfish and a stonefish on SP. we did some night fishing at bundige and we couldn't even manage a stingray. all the beaches were dead there wasn't even any bait fish around. the only place that looked promising was at learmonth jetty, at the jetty i think we saw just one queenie but there was some bait fish around so that kind of gave the feeling that there would be fish around. probaly the most productive spot would have to be the bundige boat ramp finger jetty, at the jetty we were hammering the yellow fin bream with the biggest at around 40 cm we caught some big eye trevally there too.
i sorry if i am going on a bit but i was looking forward to the trip so much that when we didn't catch much i was just so disapointed.

New funding boost for shark mitigation
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Tue, 2011-11-15 17:01Norman Moore
Minister for Mines and Petroleum; Fisheries; Electoral Affairs
Tue 15 November, 2011
Portfolio: Fisheries
- $2.05million over five years to establish a Shark Response Unit
- $1.98million annually for helicopter and beach patrols
- $1.7million for four shark-related research projects
The State Government will invest more than $13.65million over the next five years to help reduce the potential risk of shark attacks in response to a review of Western Australia’s shark mitigation strategies.
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the review was important in light of three tragic incidents this year, where sharks were known or believed to have been involved.
“The Government had already moved to increase Surf Lifesaving WA (SLWA) helicopter surveillance patrols along Perth beaches and Rottnest Island, with additional services soon to begin in the South-West, which will be particularly important during holiday periods and schoolies celebrations,” Mr Moore said.
The Minister said a dedicated Shark Response Unit would be established with capabilities to tag sharks that appear to be resident near popular swimming beaches and would also assess technologies like shark repellent devices and community alert systems such as SMS warnings and social media.
“Additional funding of $1.7million will support four related research projects, enabling the Department of Fisheries to explore correlations between shark sightings and attacks with locations, weather conditions, water temperatures and the activity of marine mammals that may attract sharks,” he said.
“The existing satellite-linked shark monitoring project would be extended by two years and additional monitoring equipment will be installed at locations in the South-West to help improve our knowledge of shark movements. Another research project will examine the impact on shark numbers and a study to assess the effectiveness of beach netting as a potential hazard mitigation strategy.”
While the State Government did not support beach netting at this point in time, the Department of Fisheries will undertake an evaluation of the effectiveness of beach netting as is used in the Eastern States. The department will also implement a community engagement strategy and media campaign to provide information about avoiding shark hazards.
Mr Moore said Cabinet’s consideration of other strategies had ruled out a major cull of white sharks to reduce numbers; any seal culling or relocation program; the creation of beach pools as a shark mitigation strategy; and drum line programs to control white shark numbers.
Fisheries regulation amendments have also extended an existing ban on the disposal of offal and blood at popular swimming and surfing beaches in Perth and selected regional locations. Fines for such illegal disposal would increase from $2,000 to $10,000.
“There will also be new provisions drawn up to implement a licensing regime for shark feeding and shark cage tourism operations,” the Minister said.
“No such operations currently exist in this State (unlike South Australia and South Africa) but the Department of Fisheries has received inquiries from charter operators interested in commencing this activity. It often can attract white sharks to a certain area which could pose a risk to public safety and should be more closely regulated.”
Mr Moore said the State Government was taking important steps to improve safety around potential shark hazards and people who used the marine environment should also consider their own safety and be aware of potential risks.

sunday sambos
Submitted by cahal.dahm on Tue, 2011-11-15 16:19went out on saltwater charters on sunday to jig for some sambos and YTK, got to hillarys at 6 with bacon and eggs waiting to be eating, shame i had already had my bloody weetbix! headed out, was a little choppy in the way out but did phase any of us, first we trolled for some mackies/tuna but no luck so we stop to see if we could get some YTK or skippy, my first drop my placcy got smashed then the fish spat it so i dropped it again and on the drop i hooked up with a nice little YTK, was very happy considering it was my first drop, then we started getting more YTKs biggest one ending up being around 7kg. After that we headed out to come wrecks with only some smaller sambos hanging around so we decided to move again on the way back we found a nice school of fish on the sounder so we dropped down and within the first 2 minutes matt had a solid hook up on his little pe3 outfit, ending up with a 30-35kg sambo! once we got it back thats when it all happened, about 6-8 sambos where landed over 30kg biigest one being around 40kg, i was lucky enough to hook a nice one too but fish of the day would of had to gone to andy h, was litterly a horse!.
had a great day out on the water with saltwater charters and will be heading out with them again with out a doubt!

VHF Radio Range
Submitted by Dizzy on Tue, 2011-11-15 13:45What sort of VHF range are you guys getting West of Rotto - out as far as the FADs ?
My oldish 27Mhz is the only thing I haven't upgraded (works OK, just intermittently got a dodgy volume knob) but from what I've read, 27mhz monitoring may be phased out ?
Even with a flash new VHF with a long aerial mounted up high, I'm thinking due to the possible line-of-sight VHF limitations I'd better invest in renewing the 27Mhz too before we christen the boat out that far ....... or beyond.
But might be a bit pointless if 27mhz is getting phased out and everyone just running VHF these days ?
