Tuff Tackle??
Submitted by bigdavet86 on Thu, 2011-11-03 15:19Is anybody using rods or reels by Tuff Tackle?
I have been looking at their webpage and reckon i might ry one of their combos out. Looking at the Diablo 10000 reel. 30kg of drag, carbontex drag, full alloy construction, decent line capacity. http://www.tufftackle.com.au/diablosniper10000.html Seems to tick all the boxes. Reckon i will put it on their 6'8" all purpose rod. http://www.tufftackle.com.au/tt50to80lbtroll.html. .
Anyone know of the quality etc. Living in Morawa, and my boat being in Perth, tends to limit fishing expeditions, so i cant really justify spending heaps. At $325 for the combo, this fits into my $500 budget quite nicely with enough left over for some decent 50lb braid and few other bits and pieces.
looks like it should cover all bases and be just the trick for the Kalbarri trip at christmas; bottom bouncing, trolling, belting out a big twisty for some tuna. With my 3kg spin and 6kg spin, should be able to cover anything the come up.

Now for the crab count
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2011-11-03 13:57Things are looking good for the coming crab season at mandurah IF PEOPLE WILL WAIT untill they grow.
I went for a walk in the estuary last night to dab some praws for bait and there are a lot of crabs all be it small at the moment.
Sadley it appears that some people have big eye sight problems as I came accross a couple of obiously to small to keep crabs that appear to have been caught and kept then chicked back in the water when people have realised that they are way under size.
I hope fisheries catch a few of these types and makes an example of them
If I had my way I would hold of the opening of the crab season down here untill a week after the full moon in january when the size would be bigger and they should be full of meat
So here we have the crap count
Red King Crasb = 0
Blue King Crab = 0
Oppillio crab = 0
Blue Manner crab = looks to be a great season coming up
Mud Crab = remains to be seen if the warm water of the last El Nina brought any larve or small crabs down with it and into the estuary

Dual purpose rod.
Submitted by knigit on Thu, 2011-11-03 11:20Sorry for yet another rod thread but there's just way too many brands to keep track of it all.
Only get out as a deckie in Perth every once in a while so not looking to spend too much.
The fishing we do on the boat I go out in is some bottom bashing for dhu's etc. and jigging for sambos.
Stiff enough that rod isn't bent over double just by the big sinker for bottom bashing Vs Exciting for the jigging.
Using a good eggbeater with 50lbs braid. Fish mainly for sport, eating them is only a secondary bonus. Would like for combo to be damn close to snapping point for the better sized sambos around. Happy to loose a few/bust the rod rather than be hauling things in on a winch and broomstick.
Any suggestions?

New Rec Netting Regulations
Submitted by meglodon on Wed, 2011-11-02 22:00Is everyone who uses a gill net in the peel area aware of the new regs reguarding netting times. The new regs allow you to get your net in the water after 4'30pm and it must be cleaned every hr and you must stay within 100 metres of the net. Then the net must be removed by 2400hs
The regs haven't changed for the Bunbury area 2 night still allowed wed and fri 1 1/2 hrs before sunset to 1 1/2hrs after sunrise next day.
As a person who uses a net to catch mullet of a wed night as a social eventwith friends I have no problem with the changesI'm normally in a semi comotose state by 1130 anyway. The changes should put a stop to people leaving their nets out all night and catching a hell of a lot of bycatch.

Saragosa 18000 vs Saltist 6500H vs Exceler 6500 vs Safari MetaRoyal 5000
Submitted by Dizzy on Wed, 2011-11-02 18:35Hey all,
I'm updating & adding to my gear after a long time out.
Kids are getting old enough to come along and the Mrs can't nag if I choose to piss off by myself
So I'm after some feedback / advice on the above Reels to use mainly for Bottom Bashing & Jigging, and some spinning.
I'll be doubling up to have a spare rig for the ol' man, so the budget's in the $250-$350 range.
At this stage it'll be used as a PE6-PE8 rig on a Fin Nor Offshore rod.
I've read a bit already from using the forum search, but haven't seen many direct comparisons other than the Saltist vs Saragosa.
From what I read, the Saltist 6500's ratio may be a bit high for jigging / deeper stuff - so the Exceler may be the lower ratio Daiwa option
Apparently they're basically the same reel, but the Exceler seems to be a fair bit cheaper - so I'm trying to work out why.
I'll probably be OK with the Saltist anyways - I'm 6'4" and pack a bit of beef.
The Saragosa looks a nice bit of kit - and I've had some nice (smaller) Shimano stuff in the past.
The Ryobi ? Well - they certainly look the part, and appear to be great value.
I think I've still got my EX400 from 25-30 years ago, but the only other Ryobi stuff I bought was a Blower/Vac.
.... and it completely sucked ASS.
Also, I'd be looking at getting new smaller rods for my existing Stradic 4000 & 2000, which have only ever previously been used for land-based fishing.
Any experienced suggestions / comments / advice would be great.
Thanks,
Dizz.

Advice for first 4x4
Submitted by cuthbad on Wed, 2011-11-02 12:40Hey all,
Looking at purchasing my first 4x4. Most I wanna spend is $15K to cover everything, so I was thinking if I spend about 10-12 that hopefully leaves enough to cover any unexpected costs and extras down the line. Im looking for something pretty reliable as I'm not a mechanically minded person so dont wanna be spending too much time trying to repair things. If its not quite up to the job of getting me into every remote corner of Australia thats fine, so long as I dont get stuck on a beach somewhere when it starts having problems.
I started trying to do some research on the topic but all I learnt was how little I know. Anyone able to point me in the right direction in terms of make and model that might suit my needs and budget?
Also, if anyone can recommend a good 4x4 forum that would be great, most of them seem to be based around specific cars or brands.
Cheers,
Adam

New season format for abalone fishing
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2011-11-01 09:03New season format for abalone fishing
Portfolio: Fisheries
- New one-day-per-month format for recreational abalone fishing in the West Coast Zone
- One-hour sessions on the first Sunday of each month November to March
- Total closure applies north of Moore River for recreational abalone fishing
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the new format allowed fishing for one Sunday a month over a five-month period.
“Fishing will begin as usual on Sunday, November 6 and operate for one hour only and there will then be a month’s break between each fishing opportunity,” Mr Moore said.
“The previous abalone fishing season arrangements allowed for five one-hour sessions over five consecutive Sundays, but the new season will be the first Sunday of the month for five consecutive months.”
Recreational abalone fishing in the West Coast Zone, between the Busselton Jetty and Moore River, will be permitted between 7am and 8am, on December 4, 2011, January 1, 2012, February 5, 2012 and March 4, 2012.
The Minister said recreational fishers had requested the new season structure, because conditions in November were often too cold and rough.
“Fishing in the warmer months will add to the safety for abalone collectors due to lower swells and longer breaks between fishing windows will also provide flexibility for the Department of Fisheries to monitor the fishery throughout the season, from a research and compliance perspective,” he said.
“It will enable researchers to use catch prediction models based on tide, swell and wind to manage the season in ‘real-time’ to ensure the total allowable catch of 40 tonne for all recreational fishers can be adhered to.
“If monitoring indicates excessive catch levels under the new format, it may be necessary to close the season earlier and notify fishers.”
People are also reminded they must have the appropriate licence to fish for abalone and that a total closure applies from north of Moore River to the Northern Territory border.
With that closure, abalone stocks along the Mid-West and North-West coastlines have been placed under full protection, so they can recover from a marine heatwave that almost destroyed stocks in some parts of Western Australia’s coast last summer.
Licensed recreational abalone fishers have been urged to familiarise themselves with the revised fishing format for the 2011 recreational abalone fishing season.- 1 comment
