Submitted by santhmoore on Sun, 2011-10-09 11:10At what sort of speed should your sounder still work effectively? My sounder seems to work when doing 4 knots or so & going in a straight line, is this normal?

Female Crabs in Geographe Bay
Submitted by nev on Fri, 2011-10-07 22:48Did anyone see the Win News tonight? Apparently there was a story on the large amount of female crabs that enter Geographe Bay shallows prior to going into their spawning cycle. There are certainly a high percentage of female crabs in the shallows here in the winter months , then they just seem to go quiet in the warmer months. I wonder how long before a closure becomes effective down here ? Could be a good thing , what do you think?

BOM forecast for Sunday
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2011-10-07 21:40BOM forecast for Sunday is for ESE - SSE winds 15 - 23 knts..... Willy weather says ESE 12 - 14 knts @ Rotto for most of the day.... which one do you believe?? BOM is more reliable I feel. Really wanted to go out deep if it wasn't going to be too windy offshore, but alas I fear I will be restricted to the protection of the coast and Three Mile Reef off Ocean Reef?
What does everyone else think the conditions will be like?

Fishers urged to report feral fish sightings
Submitted by bod on Fri, 2011-10-07 20:51The Department of Fisheries is urging fishers to report any sightings of non-native (introduced) fish species caught or encountered in our rivers, lakes and dams, following the reported capture of a silver perch in the Swan River at Guildford.
In addition, aquarium owners are being reminded not to release fish into rivers, ponds or lakes or to flush them down toilets or drains.
The silver perch is a species that is not native to Western Australia. Like other introduced species, it can have a destructive impact if released into our native and local freshwater ecosystems. Healthy stocks of native fish species play an important role in maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems and even reducing mosquito numbers by predating on the insect’s larvae.
Following the reported capture of the silver perch by a local recreational fisher in the Lilac Hill Park stretch of the river at Guildford, the Department of Fisheries, in partnership with the Swan River Trust and the Department of Water, undertook a week-long monitoring program to help determine the presence of any more silver perch or other introduced fish species.
To date no more silver perch have been detected but the Department is asking people to be on the look-out for non-native fish in the Swan and in any other water bodies in the State.
Department of Fisheries Aquatic Environment Branch Manager Rae Burrows said: “We are asking fishers and members of the public to report anything suspicious to us on our Fishwatch number on 1800 815 507.
“People need to be aware that introduced fish species such as carp, redfin perch, tilapia, yabbies, cichlids and goldfish can impact on native fish and invertebrate stocks if released and upset the balance of our iconic freshwater ecosystems. Releasing unwanted pet fish into freshwater environments poses a big threat to the health of our waters.”
More information on introduced fish species can be found at http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/IMPFreshwater/index.php?0506
A leaflet produced by the Swan River Trust on feral fish in the Swan Canning Riverpark can be found at http://www.swanrivertrust.wa.gov.au/news/facts/Documents/brochure_feral_fish.pdf

knot in braid
Submitted by fisharoo on Fri, 2011-10-07 17:38hey there, while feeding line through the guides i must have done something wrong as a granny knot formed on my main line. i think line went under a loop on the spool.
being so fine i was unable to undo it.
just wondering how would this effect its strength? (knot ended up 10 m from the end)
got 150m on the spool n also quite expensive line so hope for some positive feed back :(
thanks

How often do you replace line on game reels
Submitted by Jimsjams44 on Fri, 2011-10-07 11:29Hey guys, I'm sort of new to the game fishing side of things and want to know how often you should replace your line on your game reels.
I've got a Penn International 50TW that I have used for the last two seasons now having caught/lost multiple marlin on it and I don't know whether I should replace it.
It looks fine but I know looks can be deceiving. I would be interested to hear others thoughts on this.
Cheers,
James

Octobers 1Last Cast Competition!!
Submitted by Assassin Tackle on Fri, 2011-10-07 10:24Hi FW members.
It seems the warm weather is on its way, which is great news for most of us
.
This months 1Lastcast Competition is open to all FW members.
The prize is a pair of FLOATERS, a new brand of floating sunnies from the well known Barz Optics. They should arrive new week and I will post up a picture.
The prize will once again need to be collected in store.
We are looking for photos showing a great day out on the water of you and you fishing mates or family.
Same rules apply as the last comp. It will run for one month from 7/10/2011 to 7/11/2011.
I will get Adam to choose the winning picture once again.
Well done to Paul winning last months comp. Unfortunately the comp cannot be won by the same person twice.
Good luck and Happy fishing.

Dunsborough Fishing
Submitted by LandyAndy on Thu, 2011-10-06 18:41Hi Guys
A hastily arranged fishing trip.
A mate rings today and is heading for his beach shack at the weekend in Dunsborough.
I have decided to join him and instead of beach fishing,Im taking the boat.
I have never boat fished down there.
Anybody know of "non secret" fishing marks???
Would love to get a Dhuie or Snapper before the west coast demersal closure.

The tear's are going to flow....
Submitted by tailor marc on Thu, 2011-10-06 15:51Well my mates time on the construction of Pluto project is just about up an he is thinking about his options. Looks like Gladstone QLD may be the next option.
If it happens i wont be heading to Karratha anymore. Very sad about that , love the place but i will head to the barrier reef fishing which will be great. He is taking the boat and 4wd etc.
Anyone know much about the fishing over that way around Gladstone? Looks like the same distance north west to the north east coast to i asume mackies, gt's etc.
I will still miss Karratha alot !!!

pully system 4 -1 advantage needed for drum winch
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2011-10-06 15:27Hi All
Can some one please help me.
I need to set up a drum wnich with a 4-1 advantage to the winchie;
winch load 1kg. load to be lifted 4 kg.
Now the hard part, the load lifting end of the cable can not be made fast to any other thing but the load
The load can not have a pully attached to it.
There cannot be a non-fixed pully between the last fixed pully and the load
I have gorgotten my phyisics and can't find the answer on the net
Situation is, I want to use a small 12 volt winch to lift a 4kg down rigger weight up and down and because of the depth of the weight using a pully fixed to the weight or "floating" is impracticale.
Any and all help appreciated

GP7000 or Navman trackfish 6600
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Wed, 2011-10-05 22:40Hi all, I am after some advise. I am getting a Furuno 585 with M260 tranny from a sponsor for this site. Currently I have a Navman 6600 for my sounder and a GP 7000 for my plotter. Which one do I keep as a plotter Gp 7000 or Trackfish 6600. The Trackfish is nicely mounted in the dash in front of steering wheel, which would have to be removed and panel replaced to suit the GP 7000, if I end up keeping the Gp 7000. I know that the GP7000 is worth way more, it also has a more recent C Map than the Trackfish 6600. I will then mount the 585 on the dash where the GP 7000 is currently.
Just wanna know what others would do? Look forward to your replies.
