grey nurse breeding cave?

hi guys , we went to mandurah for the weekend and went out saturday and sunday we caught some smallish pinks and heaps of small Dhu"s (released) a few sambo"s on plastics and generally had a few cans and didn"t get too serious but most interestingly at one spot 21 mile off mandurah we anchored on a lump that came from 36 to 25m and while two of us fished plastics and floaters my brother and brother in law and another mate fished the bottom at anchor and within 1/2 an hour had 2 biteoffs then 2 ,70/80 cm queenies (released) then a double hookup that resulted in 2 grey nurse sharks arond 2.2m long , five minutes after this my other mate hooked up on my 20,000 stella and gets his ass handed to him for about 10 minutes by a grey nurse about the size of the ones at aqua aquarium LOL!  anyway all were released and we moved so we didn't hook any more of them. now the limited amount i know about grey nurse sharks tells me that we must have anchored over a cave? and if any divers or someone with an interest in these sharks (protected species?) would like the co ords  i would be happy to give them to you.

cheers

sundays trip

well with a mate who has been doing more than well on the pinks an   ofer      was accepted so quik he almost had a nose bleed when he said "hey brenz let go to the snapper spot on sunday". so we hit the ramp at 430 to be greeted with a not to bad se wind . we hit the water with 2 tinnys  and of we went. as soon as we got out of the marina it was sloppy as so tyson proceded my self and nell decided there was no need to break our backs so we just cruised out there. we arived fairly early set up the boat and berly and away we went . first on board was a smallish skippy of round the 30 cm mark followed by a 44 cm snapper on the next both on plastics . by this time the sounder had bigger arks than maccas and it was nellys turn to step up . after 5 mins of solid runs he boated this sambo on 15lb in 8 m of water fair effort i recon. after that the fish shut down but were still showing on the sounder . it was roughly 8 am now so we decided to hit some of the local hillarys herring up ready for our next mulloway assult. the herring were definatly not playing hard to het with many fish comming aboard with the small blues code stick bait being the stand out favourite even hooking into some nice skippy aswell. was a great day on the water with a bit of gear being nicely stretched .

Fishing Pal for S-Bend Trip

I am booked for a trip to the S-Bend next weekend and I am looking for someone who may be interested in joining me. I travel up on the Saturday morning this week and will be returning next Monday.

I have a van booked at the S-Bend caravan park for the Sat/Sunday.

Interested people can PM me. Some expense sharing is involved for fuel and the van.

If you are unsure then please don't bother to enquire. I am only interested in people who can come without backing out and are able to share expenses.

This is a prime opportunity for someone who hasn't fished that area or someone who knows it and wants to get back there. Key targets are greenback Tailor and Mulloway.

Does Jellyfish affect estuary or jetty fishing?

Hey guys,

This may be a very dumb question but been noticing lately that everytime i see alot of jellyfish in the water i always go home empty handed. This morning for instance. Went to Birchgrove and first thing i saw was a school of jellyfish. cu the story short. from 3 am to 11am not even 1 bite. i have 5 rods out and also spinning. Biat: live yakka, Squid and pillie. and everytime i check the bait.. not touch!!! No joke when i say that i start and left with the same bait on the line.

I been looking at the web but i dont see any article about it.. Any comment?

I gotta say that I haven't had too many "purple patches" but yesterday was one. It started Friday morning with a phone call from a long time fishing buddy who I rarely get the chance to fish with these days. Bob invited me to join him and his son Scott for a bit of bottom fishing on Saturday ( Grand final day ). The plan was to have a very early morning start and get back in time to watch the game. I usuall take folks out on my boat so I jumped at the chance to go out on Scott's and not have to be the skipper. Because they live in Mandurah, I had to get up really early....talking 2:30 am in order to arrive in Mandurah for the 4:00am start. The plan was to leave the jetty ( in Scott's backyard....lucky bugger live's on the cannals ) and under the cover of darkness sneak out to Scott's most secret Dhui spotts.....Well this was the perfect excuse to go out and buy the new light weight jigging outfit that I have been dreaming about so armed with the Mastercard I left work early Friday afternoon in search of the new fishing weapon. By 5:30pm I found what I wanted after visiting 5 of Perths largest tackel stores.....The Saltist LD 30, two speed reel and a matching Saltist 6ft ST LD 60-56 jigging rod....spooled the reel with 50lb multi color braid.....( bought it from one of our sponsors )......By the way thanks to every one who replied to my post asking for advice....Not only did I buy the new combo, I stocked up on an assortment of soft plastics went with the McArthy range, could't find any of the 10 inch ones so had to settle on 6-8 inch lures, Bullhead and Paddle tail minnows, pink/pearl was my favorite. I was really hard to find heads in the 2-4oz range. Finally found some Berkley Nitro 4oz Lumo Green Elevator heads ( see the photos )...Also bought a really strange lure called Pirates made by Daiwa...( see the photos )....;.Ok back to the fishing story. Somehow i managed to arrive only 15 mins late to Scott's place in Mandurah. After a quick brekkie from HJ's we loaded up the boat and got underway by 4:45 am...We settled in for the 26 mile trip out, it was not as calm as we had hoped and had to travelle at 18-20 knts.....we arrived at the first spot just as the sun hit the horizon. The weather forcast was good but we were greeted with 15 knts of wind and a 1.5 meter swell....not too bad in a 26ft glass boat....with the sun comes the wind...so armed with the new outfit and the soft plastic I made my first drop and started jigging....the boys went with bait and made jokes about my "gay" fishing out fit looking like a herring rod for a girl....well we spent about 20 mins at the first spot and nothing....Scott assures me not to worry that he has plenty of other locations...so off we go in search of the elusive dhui... 15 mins. later we arrive....Bob's first in and bang he's on....nice sargent backer...mean while I'm still lifting the rod up and down wondering about changing to bait when all of a sudden I get hammered and its finally time to see what this new outfit can do, 5 min later and the first dhui is up, not quite size so back down he goes on the release weight ..( Scott keeps an old overhead ready to do the job ).......Next up Bob catches a small red snapper....and the plastic gets its next victum, a nice 8 kg dhui to keep, the jokes about me fishing with condums start to change after the third fish falls victum to the jigger.....Bob finally gets a dhui on bait but not size......and then the plastic scores again just over size and its released to fight another day...and so it goes on, with my best fish weighing in at 11 kg...the end tally was me and my plastic with 6 Dhu fish....and the boys with 4 Dhu fish each on bait for a grand total of 14 Dhu caught in just over 3 hrs....6 of the fish were legal size !!!...of course we only kept our boat limit of 2 all the others were released alive and well....back to Scotts for beers and the game....my best half day fishing ever!!!!.....interesting to note, the boys caught a few other assorted species on bait.....my plastic caught only Dhu fish, nothing else....love the new outfit very light and super smooth drag, used the low gear on the 11kg fish, made the job really easy, money well spent and I am sold on the soft plastic....no more smelly bait for me at least not if I'm tarketing Dhu fish

WhaleShark while squidding

Thought some of you might get pissed off so I thought I better post it. :)

Was out squidding today, Grand Final day with a mate out from the Exmouth Marina. We put the boat in at McLeod Beach, and went out a few hundred metres. After seeing quite a few Humpback Whales, I said to the mate, check that out, it looks like a Manta Ray. So I ran over to where it was and couldnt believe what we saw. It was a WhaleShark of around 6 metres in probably 2 metres of water at the back of the reef. I got to pat the Shark on 2 occasions as it swam up to the back of the boat.

The weather got better and glassed off for the rest of the afternoon......another day in paradise. This was the second time I have come across WhaleSharks while fishing in Exmouth out of my tinnie.

so who feels as let down as me?????

whats your ideas on this draw?? best final i have watched since westcoast/swans but feel slightly ripped off, imagine flying there for it, maybe another quarter may have been the key?? whats your opinion????

How to keep fish fresh.

Hey guys,

Am heading out to Kalbarri on Monday and heading out on the boat on Tues with Laurie. Was wondering how we should keep our fish that we caught fresh so the trip back to Perth on Wed. I've been told that keeping a gutted/bled fish in a slushie of ice and water kills the meat and that freezing absolutely destroys the fish ( metaphorically speaking). Anyone could help in the matter?

s/p are killing it latley

with all the people doing well on the s/p lately, looks like i am gunna have to give it a bash.

i always said there was no chance of me trying this on the serious no bait day out......but the evidence speaks for itself....just not tomorrow..

how hard is it to hit the water with no bait...be like a friday night with no bourboun?

jurien 23/9/2010

What an up and down day it was for me.

1am i woke up had shower/breakfast packed my car and left to go pick up johnny boii. Got to his house about 2 am. He had directions printed out from google maps and off we went. Google maps NEVER WILL TRUST AGAIN. We went wayyy past the road we were meant to turn at "jurien east rd" and ended up goin past the next as we now didnt have any idea where to go or anyone to ask or reception to call some one. So we pulled over and found a truckie sleeping in his truck, knocked on his door and asked where to go haha, poor guy.

So then we sort of had an idea where to go but not really. Driving along this time really speedng about 1*0 and there were two dead kangaroos on road and in a quick decision i had to go over the roo. My xr6 copped it and now my car was smellin like burnt roo meat. We took indian ocean road only to realize there is about 95 kms to go and we had 45 min until 6 am boat leaving time but i only had 50 kms of fuel left :s. So traveling at a steady speed so i didnt burn fuel until about 10 kms away clnk clnk clnk car cut out after ridin 0 kms for about 35 kms.

Luckily some one was drivin the opposite way at that exact second so i beeped/flashed them down. They stopped and took me to jurien servo and by this time could finally get reception to call honsu. I called him and it was just after 6 am and they were waiting for us. Honsu came and picked me up with a jerry can and fuel in it. So we raced to my car to give it a bit of juice to get to the port when half way to my car we realized i left it at the servo rushing so much. So back we went, picked it up then back to my car. Filled it up and raced to the boat. It was was then 6:45 and thanks to honsu and crew for waiting we got to board the boat. There was more little bits in the story but too much to explain :) Some great fish were caught and i caught my first fish on plastics and a jig.

First fish caught on plastic was an 84 cm dhuie with the Mcarthy baby elf paddle tail everyone talks about :)

Appreciate you boys waitin for us. Marko

Fujinon Stabilized Binocular Review 14 X 40

I just got a new pair of the Fujinon Stabilized Binoculares off of Ebay and spent about 1150 after shipping.  Before I bought them I couldn't find any current articles on here or anywhere else of people who had them so I thought we need to fix that!

I use them from the tower driving station while the boat is on Autopilot and they are crazy effective.  In the past where I can just see a boat on the horizon, now I can identify who it is and if they're moving.  Helps alot to know whether it is a long liner putting out line or if it is another sport-fisher on the fish.  You can pick out birds really well on the horizon where it would be impossible otherwise.  It's kind of fun, because I think my mate has the best eyes for spotting stuff of anyone I've been around and now it's no contest.  The first day out, before I even left the dock, I could see Bonito jumping at 2 miles away while I was waiting on the customers.  In addition, they don't burn batteries like I thought.  I use them off and on so it's hard to say how long the batteries last, but I make it through the full day with good batteries and just recharge them at night for good measure.  The first day out I brought 12 batteries thinking they would burn them fast and that isn't the case.

The case is freaking awesome.  They come with a pelican hard case and it's awesome.  Enough said.

I spent forever researching them before I bought them and I found these have 5 degrees of stabilization where the canons only had one degree.  Obviously 1 degree wouldn't work in the tower in even flat weather.  They take 48mm camera filters if you want a UV filter or polarized filter to save your eyes.  The polarized filter is a little dark, and if you don't give everything time to heat up they fog really bad.  i have to let the lenses heat up (after being at the house in the AC) or they instantly fog and you can't see anything.  If you don't use a filter, fogging isn't too big of an issue after you figure out to keep your eyes a little off of the eyepieces.

They do make me a little bit seasick, but it's minimal.  That says alot though as we fish 220+ days a year, and that doesn't include the days off which are usually spent in at least some part on the boat.  I hasn't gone away yet, but I haven't had many trips with these yet so hopefully that will go away.

In short, if you want to find more fish, use these.  On my last trip, they turned what could have been a 0 afternoon into a 13 Dorado and 5 Wahoo afternoon.  I pretty much can always find something each trip with them, and won't be out on the water again without them.  Two Thumbs Up!

Mulloway from shore

Hi everyone,

It's not another "how to catch a mulla" thread. There is heaps of discussion on new moon vs full moon fishing for mullas from shore and I have my own theory about when the best time to fish is. I'm trying to test this theory and having only caught the one myself, I need to hear from people who have caught a mulla in the past.

So if you've ever caught a landbased mulla (not offshore) and want to share your story - I'd be really keen to hear from you. I'm chasing the date of the catch - and that's all. However, if you happen to know the approximate time and the rough size of the mulla that would be appreciated.

I've scoured the forum and pulled out 15 threads dating back to 2005 however need a heap more data to test my theory out.

Just for those who are interested in solunar theory and use the Angler's Almanac, I'm looking at other astronomical factors to predict firstly the level of aquatic activity and hopefully specifically whether mulloway should be on the prowl.

May well prove to be a junk theory...but that's where you come in. :-)

Thanks

Buschy

20-30lb braid??

hey all.

just a quick question.

i bought a bario 11ft 6-15kg rod about a month ago and im about to buy a 8000 sphero reel.

now for the question, do you think 20-30lb sunline super PE braid would be better hoping to get 300m of line on it. the fish i want to be targeting is tailor, salmon, bonito when around, but also the chance of mulloway and also land the odd small shark.

what do you guys think?

cheers
