New season format for abalone fishing
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2011-11-01 09:03New season format for abalone fishing
Portfolio: Fisheries
- New one-day-per-month format for recreational abalone fishing in the West Coast Zone
- One-hour sessions on the first Sunday of each month November to March
- Total closure applies north of Moore River for recreational abalone fishing
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the new format allowed fishing for one Sunday a month over a five-month period.
“Fishing will begin as usual on Sunday, November 6 and operate for one hour only and there will then be a month’s break between each fishing opportunity,” Mr Moore said.
“The previous abalone fishing season arrangements allowed for five one-hour sessions over five consecutive Sundays, but the new season will be the first Sunday of the month for five consecutive months.”
Recreational abalone fishing in the West Coast Zone, between the Busselton Jetty and Moore River, will be permitted between 7am and 8am, on December 4, 2011, January 1, 2012, February 5, 2012 and March 4, 2012.
The Minister said recreational fishers had requested the new season structure, because conditions in November were often too cold and rough.
“Fishing in the warmer months will add to the safety for abalone collectors due to lower swells and longer breaks between fishing windows will also provide flexibility for the Department of Fisheries to monitor the fishery throughout the season, from a research and compliance perspective,” he said.
“It will enable researchers to use catch prediction models based on tide, swell and wind to manage the season in ‘real-time’ to ensure the total allowable catch of 40 tonne for all recreational fishers can be adhered to.
“If monitoring indicates excessive catch levels under the new format, it may be necessary to close the season earlier and notify fishers.”
People are also reminded they must have the appropriate licence to fish for abalone and that a total closure applies from north of Moore River to the Northern Territory border.
With that closure, abalone stocks along the Mid-West and North-West coastlines have been placed under full protection, so they can recover from a marine heatwave that almost destroyed stocks in some parts of Western Australia’s coast last summer.
Licensed recreational abalone fishers have been urged to familiarise themselves with the revised fishing format for the 2011 recreational abalone fishing season.- 1 comment

Mooring Weights
Submitted by Seaquest on Tue, 2011-11-01 08:35Looking at setting up a mooring for a 7.5m boat. I have the bouy and ropes sorted but need some chain and a weight. How heavy a weight do you need for this size boat and what is best to use?
If anyone has anything laying around that would do the job let us know.
Cheers

trolling and ballooning reel?
Submitted by Luke_B on Mon, 2011-10-31 10:11hi fellas,
im after a trolling and ballooning overhead reel, im new to the whole trolling and ballooning scene so im undecided and unsure of what reel would be best. im not after a huge reel, something small that can hold a good amount of line. im planning on spooling it up with 30lb fireline. so far ive been looking at the tiagra 12, but unsure on line capacity.. anyone have one that can let me know how much line it can take? how does it compare to lets say a torsa 20?
its just going to be used for trolling for pelagics, and ballooning for mackies up north, if tiagra 12 is slightly to small, might look at the 16.. although id prefer if there was something else a bit smaller and lighter. any suggestions will be great!

Mulloway spawn size
Submitted by Rig on Sun, 2011-10-30 22:04Hey guys
I was just reading an article in modern fishing magazine that stated mulloway don't spawn until they are around 700mm long, so with our minimum size limit being 500mm any fish this size haven't spawned according to that info.
Anyone involved in the mulloway project fisheries and tafe(I think) are/were running and can shed any light to whether this is true or not

A quick bunno report!!
Submitted by barneyboy on Sun, 2011-10-30 18:21Well, finally got the boat back in the water after about 3 months. Complete with a 200mm raised casting deck, carpet and a few new accesories.
Fished friday arvo and bagged out on skippy. Not big fish, 30 to 40cm. Had to work pretty hard for em though. But I did score a few on plastics and small metals.
Me thinks they have been getting smashed pretty hard with this ban on.
Anyways, went out this morning. Had until 10am to track down a feed.
The aim was squid and KGW.
The fella I took got a few squid and we both got a mixture of assorted reefies.
He did manage to hook a fairly large ocky on a standard bait. Thought he was snagged and preceeds to wind up a chunk of rock /coral.
I look over the side and the ocky is clinging for dear life to this rock and didnt wanna let it go. It wasnt until a bit of persuasion tha the ocky finally let go of his rock. Haha. Funny as.
We hit up a KGW spot that I regularly get good fish on for nada.
It was like the sand that had been covering the top of this reef had been washed away.
It was like a totally different spot with a plague of reefies over it.
Before we never got reefies off it just whiting and the odd scorpion fish. Very strange indeed.
Has anyone experienced something like this before?
Happy fishing!!

MISSING DOLLAR!
Submitted by Jeffree on Sun, 2011-10-30 16:03Three backpackers went to a hostel in America.
The cost of an overnight stay was $30 for the three friends, so they split the cost 3 ways, ($10 each).
the next day the owner was so happy with their behaviour, he gave them a $5 disount and asked the bell boy to give the three men their $5.
to make things simple, the three men gave the bell boy a $2 tip so they could split the remainder $3 evenly, ($1 each)
so end of the day, the three men paid $9 each, and the bell boy kept $2.
9x3=27 plus the $2 the bell boy kept = $29.
WHERE IS THE MISSING DOLLAR?!

Saltiga 50 2sp, Ocea jigger 4000/5000 or Trinidad 30?
Submitted by Jamos Damokos on Sun, 2011-10-30 14:16what reel to buy? pe 6-8 outfit, jigging/bottom bashing. any thoughts?
rod will more than likely be a JM powerspell 450.
the ocea jiggers look nice but is it worth the extra coin over the trinidad, was also thinking a 2sp would be good but the ocea jigger covers that with a 4:1 gear ratio.

Replacement Spool
Submitted by Graeme76 on Sun, 2011-10-30 11:34I've got a Shakespeare Abyss Spinning Combo (3-7kg) that was cheap but I really like. My problem is that the reel spool is made of plastic & has colapsed & Shakespeare doesn't do replacement parts for this reel. The reel is the Abyss 50 & I'm wondering if anyone knows of another spool that would fit on it? I took some measurements as best as I could from the mangled one, they should be pretty accurate:
Spool Diameter at bottom: 58mm
Height (overall): 55mm
Line Height (top to bottom): 25mm
Drag Washer Depth: 9mm
Internal base of spool to very bottom lip: 23.5mm
If more info is needed please let me know & I'll post it up ASAP. Thanks.

Quality braid?
Submitted by ALEXANG3 on Sun, 2011-10-30 10:24Hi guys,
Couple of questions here, so thanks in advance for any help.
I am looking at getting a 5000SW Stella to match my PE3 Xzoga for demersal jigging, etc. I am thinking of spooling the 5000 with Varivas Big One PE3 but am wondering where the best place to get the braid is? I prefer to get the Stella locally, but am not bothered about where the braid comes from. Also, if i go with the reel and braid above, am i naive to think i could match it with a different rod to cast for spangos, trevally, etc up north?
I am also looking at a Stella 20000SW for sambo jigging and general bigger stuff and am wondering what good braid i should spool this with? Again, if i go a 20000SW, will the reel and braid be appropriate for GT popping and some deeper bottom bashing? I don't want to spend a bucket load of money to have a single purpose reel.
Cheers,
Alex
