Higher than normal risk of cyclones this season

Anyone want to take a punt and guess when the first one will form off W.A?

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/higher-than-normal-risk-of-cyclones-this-season/story-e6frg1rc-1226169009776

"SEVERE weather experts are warning North-West communities to batten down now for an above average number of cyclones this season.

Two cyclones are expected to hit the coast, with a ‘significant risk’ of at least one severe tropical cyclone impacting WA this year, according to forecasters at the WA Bureau of Meteorology.

Coastal communities between Broome and Exmouth face the highest cyclone risk of anywhere in Australia and the season starts on November 1.

"Climate models are trending toward another La Nina episode, which would lead us to expect a slightly higher than average number of tropical cyclones, however, no two La Nina events are the same,” BOM Severe Weather Services manager Andrew Burton said.

La Nina conditions are where lower sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean create a see-saw of pressure, triggering thunderstorm and cyclone activity.

"While this La Nina may be weaker than the last, this doesn't mean Western Australia can expect fewer tropical cyclones than the previous season," Mr Burton said.

Last year, where the La Nina phenomenon was much stronger, WA experienced an average season with five tropical cyclones off the northwest coast.

The strong La Nina conditions caused an above average number of tropical lows which didn't intensify into tropical cyclones.

"For most people a bad season is one when their community is directly affected. Last season's severe flooding in the Gascoyne was not directly associated with a tropical cyclone, but is an example of how tropical lows can also cause significant flooding," said Mr Burton."

Boats jigging scratch that itch

Right this post could be posted in one of about three sections.

Basically is anyone heading out for some early jigging for the YTK's amberjacks sambos.

Yes i know the sharks are down the patch already but the barges isnt fairing to badly and derwent line has thrown up the odd chunky sambo.

I know there not here in full force yet, but tbh i wouldnt mind heading out and scratching that itch rather than just making fish bait out of them in the summer.

Ive worked two sambo seasons on the charters and to be honest i went out and got a real job even though im out normally 3 times a week.

Its just at the moment all this boat maintenence that goes on and the season not kicking off for another 3/4 weeks or so.

Also im going back to the uk for 3 weeks near the end of nov so im going to miss out on that few weeks i was just wondering whether anyone is heading out on the weekends or mondays for a jig frustration of not being on the water since the last day of the ban is already killing me! and that was only a few days ago!

Tight lines all

Rod Review - AJN Carbon Ultra Light

Hey Guys,

Just thought i'd post up a few pics from using the AJN Carbon rod i got a few months back.  Loaded up pics are on the sambo

At first glance its really light and flimsy but when its loaded up you can still put a fair bit of grunt into it.  Used it twice now on seasport charters and still trying to get a big fish on it to really test it out, but caught a few small sambos on it and a nice pink snapper.

I've been using soft plastics and jigs on it and it can suprisingly handle a fair bit of weight.  I was using 120g jigs with no problem at all and getting a good action into them, and also using 3 - 6oz jig heads on soft plastics and that handles well too.

Mutant Black Bream?

Fishing in walpole and nornalup inlets a few weeks back, hit a nice part of the frankland river that had bream country written all over it, the little fellas started pouring in, including this guy who seems to have had a chunk taken out of him when he was little and managed to survive somehow. Pretty amazing really

Worst monday morning in a long time :(

"Today you pass my brother, but we wont ever forget you!"

It's amazing the impact one dog can have on a family's life. Ziggy was an incredible dog, and im not just saying that because he was my own. He had energy, excitement and happiness that you had to see to believe. He could jump over 3m, climb a grated fence and balance on your shoulder like a parrot as you walked around the house casually. Everyday it seemed his remarkablity, happiness and energy would improve! Any human being would be envious of his chemical makeup; he was just always so 'stoked' to be within anyones company or just to bolt around a park. He was the talk of many conversations in our household, he was our entertainment, he was an acrobat, he was loyal and he was my brother ♥

Unfortunatley early this morning Ziggy's life was cut short by a freak accident when a van ran him over, turning a blind corner :( Too young, too healthy, too important to go!

"Rest in Peace little guy, you were a true Pekic."

Narrows bridge mulloway

Hey all was thinking of heading down to the narrows for a mulla bash on the 26th or 27th but was just wondering if you can anchor up under there or is it better to just fish from the shore? . Cheers

windy today?

hey guys, just wondering what weather forecast sites everyone is using? and also what wind strength is ok to head out?(not too far eg stragglers).

the reason i ask this is because my whole bloody weekend is ruined relying on seabreeze.com. been flat out at work for a month and wanted to take the boat out this arvo for a short session for whiting. Read seabreeze yesterday and it was perfect:) then woke up this morning saw it blowing a gale at my place, read seabreeze again and it looked bad:( being an optimist i packed my rods anywayz before i went to work. finished work at 3 and looked again 15kn, crap:( cancelled my trip.

took my family to freo for fish and chips instead...............bloody perfect weather!!!!! what the hell?

let me know any better sites to check guys. thanks

Age Old Question! Saltiga or Stella?

Looking at buying either a Saltiga expedition z6500 or a Stella 10,000.

Centre Console pros and cons

 gday all,

I'm currently looking at a new boat upgrade for myself and a mate (2 boats)  I would like to hear from the Bostom Whaler / Seafox/ Gradywhite etc owners who have a largish centre console to see how they go in terms of performance in WA conditions, wetness, etc

I'm a huge fan although I've never been out on one, but there is plenty of talk about them being wet boats and don't suit the local conditions.  Why are they so popular in the states?  I'm leaning towards a centre cab as a compromise, as you get the protection, a bit of a cabin which would be handy for the kids to get out of the sun, but still have to access to the bow to fish etc.   I've heard horror stories of smaller CC that blokes have been smashed and soaked wet, but is this true of the larger 22+ft sizes

look forward to some feedback

West Coast Demersal Fishery Ban information

Reminder that the West Coast demersal fishery is closed to recreational fishers 15 October - 15 December 2011 inclusive

Anglers are reminded that the West Coast Region (Kalbarri to Augusta) is closed to recreational fishing for demersal (bottom dwelling) scalefish species from 15th October - 15th December 2011, inclusive.

The fishing closure applies to a broad suite of 'high-risk' demersal species, including dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper, as part of a range of management measures to reduce the recreational catch by 50 per cent, following independent research that showed these species were being overfished.

South West Bioregions Manager Kevin Donohue said catch targets were being met by both commercial and recreational fishing sectors.

“The Department of Fisheries has been impressed with the level of compliance that recreational fishers have shown towards the demersal scalefish closure since its introduction in 2009,” he said.

“Support from recreational fishers has not gone unnoticed and we are grateful for their observation of the closure, which will ultimately lead to a recovery in our demersal scalefish stocks and ensure there are fish for the future.”

Mr Donohue said commercial fishers had cut their catches by 50 per cent, and reducing recreational catches was an important part of the long-term recovery plan for the fishery.

“Given species like dhufish and pink snapper grow very slowly and can live for up to 40 years, it takes a long time for the fishery to fully recover,” he said.

Fisheries and Marine Officers would focus on the demersal species fishing closure in the West Coast Bioregion and stiff penalties applied to perpetrators.

“Fishers who ignore the recreational closure and are caught with demersal scalefish in their possession will have those fish seized and could be prosecuted and fined up to $5,000, plus mandatory penalties of ten times the value of the catch,” Mr Donohue said.

“During the two month closure to the take of 'high risk' demersal species, recreational fishers can still target a number of other lower risk species such as herring, whiting and trevally.”

More information, including a full list of the species, which can and cannot be taken during the closure, can be found in the department’s Recreational Fishing Guide – West Coast Region. The guide is available online at www.fish.wa.gov.au or from Department of Fisheries' offices and information outlets.

Making your snapper sinkers

I am thinking of investing in some snapper sinker moulds and making my own.  For those who do, do the cost savings outweigh the hassle?  Where do you get the lead from, scrap metal yards?  How much does it cost?  How do you melt and pour?  What precautions are needed?  Heavy welding gloves? Face shield?  What traps do you need to be aware of?

Tantabiddi Boat Ramp

Saturday report - Tailor

Went up north of Two Rocks yesterday morning in the 4WD.

Very soft sand on the beach. Had to reverse up several times to avoid getting totally bogged.

Moved to several different spots. But couldnt fish on the reefs. Too shallow.

Ended up getting 2 approx 40cm Tailor after everyone else packed up and left. About 9am. Persistence pays off.

fishing tomorrow????

Hi everyone.. Anyone heading offshore tomorrow?

Humminbird 597 or Lowrance HDS5?

We went looking at sounders for the new Quinny today and have decided to go with a combo unit.  Due to some limited dash space we cant fit a separate sounder and chartplotter.

I liked the look of the Humminbird 597cxi HD DI unit, especially the 3D down imaging function and the fact that even with the down imaging you still only need the 1 transducer.

We've also looked at the Lowrance HDS5's but have heard a few reports of them cacking themselves so am starting to sway away from them a bit.  Prior to hearing these reports i was pretty impressed with the HDS5 units.

So if anyone has any opinions on either of the above id love to hear it.

Cheers guys.

2 Stroke or 4 Stroke?

I'm sure this question has been asked plenty of times but the search option on this site didn't help me find a previous thread.

I've always been under the impression that the 2 strokes, though have their good points like longer periods between servicing, didn't last as many hours as a 4 stroke and had the fumes issue (which makes me sea sick).

Now after being down at the boat show today, i've been told that they emit the same level of fumes as a 4 stroke now due to the stricked emissions regulations put on them and that they last the same number of hours as a 4 stroke.

If anyone can confirm this to be true and also what year model Evinrude e-tec started being produced with these low emissions as I don't want to end up buying a boat with a 2 stroke and then not being able to use it because of the fumes.

Also if anyone has other info on the good and the bad with relation to either motors.

And last but probably not least, what are peoples thoughts on having one motor or two...

... and if you buy a boat with 2 motors, when they give up the ghost, can you stick a single one on it?

Thanks in advance.

Crab Nets ...Pro's & Con's

Hi all..my old crab nets are looking a little tired so wanting to get new ones...I realise they'll all catch crabs but thought I'd ask about the best nets and setups..

Wire mesh or Nylon twine based...( I first thought wire based but imagine be a fair bit heavier to pull up and heard they were prone to tipping over ???? )

Are there different Diameters or are they standard...( I thought 600mm be standard then these XL sizes come up in search )

Using approx 10 metres of 8mm silver rope in place of the standard twine bit easier on the hands I thought...

Using some sort of clip so float comes off for easier storage...

Any input be appreciated...cheers

Broken tip

hey guys just recently got myself a Strudwick Bws 4kg 7ft 1 piece rod

absolutely love it!

until last week i rear ended sum bird on the way home from work and my rod was next to me and slid and smashed into my windscreen resulting in the photo below!

any ideas on some good repair shops which could fix this as i spent big on this rod and i dont want a cheap dodgy fix on it because it will ruin the performance and value of the rod.

Any help appreciated

Exmouth in May

G'day guys,

Mate of mine is planning a trip to Exxy possibly may next year and he's keen to tangle with some billfish (which he's never tried before).

Having never chased billies meself was wondering if anyone out there can advise on whether the billfish are active up there at that time of year.

Any tips for chasing them would be greatly appreciated, with regards to lures, water temps, depths all that sort of thing.

Cheers fellas
