Fishing trip part 1, Cairns 2 Darwin
Submitted by flyingdutchfisherman on Sun, 2011-10-02 08:26Hey guys!
Me and my mate are travelling from Cairns 2 Darwin, leaving in 20 days. We are armed with a 3.3m tinny 8 horse, 2 game rods, 2 spin rods, cast net and a shit load of lures. We driving with a station wagon, unfortunally no 4x4..
We drive first on the savannah higway to Normanton down to mount Isa up to Darwin. I know there are so many good spots to go fishing. And we love to have some great info about good places/good spots! Maybe you guys who been somewhere can help us!?
Any tips about where to go in normanton?
Barra fishing around Katherine ? Wich are the good fishing rivers?
Fishing in Kakadu national park, is it safe to boat with a 3.3 tinny between the crocs? Or shall we just keep it land based of the rockwall in the south aligator river?
And I bet there plenty of other good rivers on the way; you guys can help me out with some names?
Arriving in darwin we gonna explore all the good spots! And take a drive to the Mandorah jetty where I was doing last year some good land based fishing!
I'm gonna make a blog with all the places where we go and all the fish what/where we cath with lot of pictures for the people who may be interested?!
ps,Next trip is gonna be Darwin 2 Perth!

Fishing Fiji
Submitted by MattG on Sat, 2011-10-01 22:03Hi All,
Heading to Fiji in June next year for a mates wedding (I told him lucky the fishing is good there, else I wouldn't be coming!!)
I've emailed heaps of charter operators to get an idea of what they offer, but would love to hear from anyone who has actually used any charter operators there...
Lucky Tim, I forgot the operator you told me about?
I know a few guys on here have visited Fiji, so would love to hear your thoughts.
Staying on the Coral Coast, and will want to chuck surface lures mostly...
Thanks in advance

Saved a Flathead but not the Squid
Submitted by ledge64 on Sat, 2011-10-01 19:14Went down to Hillarys late afternoon with my favorite orange Yo-Zuri squid jig as the water was flat, caught 3 avarage squid the 3 oriental gentlemen next to me caught a 150mm flathead ( thats 6 inches in the old scale
) after a while I asked them what they did with fish and it was still swimming in their bucket, I told them these fish grow to 2 metres and are protected under 1 metre
and to put it back in the water, well they either believed me as they english was a little broken or they noticed the black belt holding up my pants..... anyway they put it back in and it swam away ok, so I saved the flathead but not the squid

Garmin GPSMap 298 Help
Submitted by Taymee on Sat, 2011-10-01 09:34My GPSMap 298 reads the depth incorrectly, sometimes not reading it all with the numerical depth indicator flashing. Not much fun in murky water. The chart page also locks up occasionally. Has anybody else had a similar problem and how did you rectify it?

Any GPS issues today?
Submitted by Dale on Fri, 2011-09-30 17:03Just wondering if anyone else noticed it today. On the GPS in the car, everything seemed to be out by about 10 meters. Usually it's pretty well spot on when you come up to a corner or whatever, but today I was already around the corner when it told me to turn. Happened all day also, not just once or twice. Would have been a bugger trying to get out of Subiaco without my TomTom.
Cheers

Holographic Sheeting
Submitted by Mick71 on Fri, 2011-09-30 10:23Hi Guys, I'm looking for some holographic tape or sheeting that is used for lures.
Has to obviously be plastic to cope with the water, I'm in the process of making some home-made-flashers.
Thanks

Landing Snapper at Woodies
Submitted by milsey on Fri, 2011-09-30 09:21Being as the sound closes tomorrow, i know you are allowed to land snapper at woodies before the 15th that have been caught outside the sound, but in the case of being checked by fisheries do we need proof to back up our word? for example a GPS screen shot?
Thanks

Father & Son Moments
Submitted by GT POPPER on Fri, 2011-09-30 09:16Any of you guys been fortunate to experience one of those father/son moments......it was one of those days when the weather was perfect and the little fella was up for a fish..we were fishing a drift of around 30mtrs targeting snapper and sambos, we managed to catch a few along with a cuttle fish which we used for bait... from that moment on all hell broke loose..the end result was a pb sambo for young Brad almost hitting the 30kg mark along with 2 more smaller sambo and 2 quality baldchin...one of those days that will be etched in the memory for a while... I tapped up an old mate Mike Roendfeldt and he manged to get in the west with one of the pix and won halco fish of the week...check out the picture at the front of the boat...the rods at full compression and he's just holding on...quality!!

Pink Snapper Madness
Submitted by santhmoore on Thu, 2011-09-29 10:11So after reading all the posts, listening to all of the general hysteria on the street & having favourable tides I thought I would go out & see for myself the waters of Cockburn sound bubbling with Pink Snapper. We headed out at 17:00 & joined the throng of 20 or so boats at what I'm guessing is the Gravel Patch or where someone stopped for a leak before being surrounded by other boats. Long story short we headed in at 00:00 without as much of a single bite & by the looks nobody else was doing any better. Could see plenty of fish on the sounder but no action, how did everyone else go?

Can someone tell me how long it should take to cook a 6kg dhuie (gutted, gilled and scaled) on a gas weber using the "indirect method"?
The fish will be taken straight out of the fridge, prepped and cooked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I don't want to stuff it up?!??!

What do you use? Line Weight, Hooks.
Submitted by GlennO87 on Wed, 2011-09-28 23:35Hey guys.
As im just getting into boat fishing and another friend is getting a nice boat soon. Im wondering what weight line and size hooks you guys use for chasing the bottom dwellers, jews, baldies, snapper, and what ever else is down there. I am running 20lb (9.1kg from memory) Spider Wire which im LOVING over the FireLine. Wondering if this is heavy enough? Im also using 30lb Berkley Triline for leaders. How ever the Triline is alot thinner than most 30lb lines it is more around 20lb thickness in other brands. It is ment to be thin and the best you know how it goes blah blah blah. Also have Spider Wire 4lb on my flick rods and Spider Wire 15lb on my beach rod. FireLine is out the window for me. Spider Wire is alot nicer. Not knocking it, if FireLine is your favourite then so be it!
Thought we could chat about what line we all run? And what size hooks we are using for what?

Port Denison
Submitted by suicidal gardie on Wed, 2011-09-28 21:13Gudday to all and sundry,
The family and I have managed to all get some time off and have decided to try out Port Denison next week and wrapped to be able to get some what seems like nice accomadation so close to school holidays. Have never been there before and were taking the 5.5m Trailcraft Profisher and I was kinda hoping that if anyone has been there or is a regular if they could give me any tips about the place in regard to any boating tips and or a general area of where we might get a few bites and the odd fish. Im not keen on going to far as the crew don't have great sea legs.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Rod advice
Submitted by danno on Wed, 2011-09-28 18:49Hey all.
Got myself a Stradic Ci4 2500 and now i just need a rod to match. Looking for a 7ft rod and planing on using 10lb braid. I really would preffer a longer butt section.
Ill be using it for squidding, whiting fishing, throwing small lures around and so on.
Im looking to spend no more then 150. Bit cheap but dont want to spend a lot.
Cheers danno.

Fin-nor or Ig-nore.
Submitted by Hook_er on Wed, 2011-09-28 15:10Does anyone have any experience with fin-nor Marqesa's??
How durable are they??
Does water and salt get into the bearings quickly and easily??
Mine hasn't been used that much and the bearings have rusted pretty badly. I generally take good care of it the only bad thing i have done is lightly rinse the reel with fresh water after each use, inox then oil it. whats the deal??
Anyones input is much appreciated.
