Anyone ever seen an orange baldie??

Caught this south side of rotto in about 50m a few months back. Is this coloration normal?

Giant Trevally

Hey Guys just wondering what good lures are around to use for Giant Trevally from the beach in Exmouth. Im stuck here because all I've got are small 5cm Halco Laser Pros and 15g metal lures and a few small poppers.

Any Ideas?

Cheers Ben

Exmouth small charter???

Hi all

I am lucky enough to be heading up to Broome on a cruise ship soon with a group of ppl and on the way back, we spend a day docked out of Exxy.  Just wondering what the chances are of organising a small fishing charter for up to 10 guys.  We are hoping to organise the boat to pick us up from the ship?  Any ideas or recommendations greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Lures for up North

Hi guys

I'm going up north this friday (30th?) and am only taking my tiny gear- small reel with 90m 3.6kg braid and 4' rod- and am wondering what are good lures to try for GT's and other species from the beach.

Also, should I take bigger reels like 2500 or 3000, and 6ft rods?

Cheers Ben

OK - who is going fishing at noon today?

I love the Eagles, and good luck to them, but I am off fishing as the wind looks good from 10am to about 3pm.  And no music  radio on the boat so cant listen.

I think I must love fishing more than footy. If the Eagles win, there is no way I would miss a GF with them in it though.

Toe-Rags

I`m sure we`ve all purchased an item at one stage or another that looks good, but just doesn`t cut the mustard according to the ratings listed. When buying off ebay it`s buyer beware, so if you find a Perth based seller you would expect that anyissues arising can be sorted out without freight hassles, WRONG.

Humour me please, i purchased an advertised 100 lb jigging rod and made an offer,(i really didn`t need another rod but thats beside the point) received the rod within2 days, great service so far. I decided to christen the rod with a calcutta 400 with 30 lb braid on it, first decent hook up and the fish taking drag, tightened it up some more and bang the top section of the rod snaps in two. High sticking was the cause according to the seller and thats as far a i got with any sort of correspondence.

Clearly the rod is not capable of handling the advertised line rating, i set my drags by digital scales so am well aware of the one third rule. For those about to say i should have bought from a local shop, i did spent over $1500 at bluewater prior to my trip, a jigging rod was not on my priority list hence, ebay.

After discussions over a few beers with some other anglers, it seems like this seller has advertised other items over the years as something their not.

I`m from the old school that believes what someone tells me, i need to harden up and take nothing for granted eh.

Any other aggrieved buyers out there ? thats my 2c for today.

Fisherman's Etiquette

Looks like this might be a fine oppertunity for Fishwrecked to put together a Fisherman's Etiquette Information Thread for responsible fishing and get the input from all Fishos and then maybe add this to the site for all members/non - members to read, understand and discuss for when going fishing.

Not only for boating, but landbased as well. I have just seen too many incidents the past 10 months, boating and landbased that begs the question has the fisho no respect for his fellow angler or the enviroment he / she fishes in. Makes me question a lot things...

Found this on the net and looks like thought and discussion went into this - this can be a starting block and we can adjust and add as we go along. The interesting bit here would be that there are the legit Fisherman's Etiquette - and then there are those "unspoken" etiquette rules, and would be great to see some input from everyone, also the older farts -

As Ethical Anglers:

  1. We do not spill or dump gasoline, oil or other pollutants on land or into the water.
  2. When fishing we never leave trash behind, including worn or discarded line, old hooks and bait.
  3. We leave our fishing site as clean or cleaner than we found it.
  4. We report environmental damage and pollution to the relevant authorities.
  5. When boating or anchoring, we take care to avoid damaging sensitive areas.
  6. We do our best to prevent the spread of exotic plants and animals.
  7. We never use as live bait fish that do not normally reside in the waters we are fishing, nor do we introduce exotic species that may survive and reproduce into fishing waters.

Responsible Anglers Respect Fish And Handle Them Carefully

  1. We use only legal tackle, attend to our gear and value our catch.
  2. We keep no more fish than needed for consumption and legally allowed and we never wastefully discard fish that are retained.
  3. We practice conservation and use proper release methods for fish not retained.
  4. We use tackle and techniques that avoid the capture of, or minimize the harm to unwanted fish or fish prohibited from retention.
  5. We learn and comply with all angling regulations.
  6. We report any illegal fishing activities we observe to the proper authorities.

Responsible Anglers Respect The Rights Of Others

  1. We treat other anglers, boaters and other people we might meet in the field with courtesy and respect.
  2. We obtain permission from landowners and never trespass on private lands or waters.
  3. We respect the space of other anglers when fishing from the shore or in a boat and give room to all anglers playing a fish.

Responsible Anglers Take Care Of Their Own Safety And The Safety Of Others When Fishing

  1. We observe all operator and safety regulations.
  2. We watch our speed and our wake and keep a safe distance from shore based anglers, jetties and other boats.

Responsible Anglers Lead By Example

  1. We educate fellow anglers, especially new participants about fishing ethics.
  2. We promote ethical behavior in the use of aquatic resources through education and example.
  3. We maintain and promote public awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding responsible fishing.

Log on from Hillarys

Hey Guys,

I recently bought a new boat ( second hand) and I was wondering if I launch from Hillarys do I log on to cockburn searescue or is it whitforts ?

I read that you have to become a member of whithfort sea rescue , does that mean i cant log on with them until i become a member?

Hope its not a stupid question.

Thanks

Seb

Name and shame?

What do youse all reckon? Left woodies this arvo, heading out for a snapper bash. On the way out, passed a "unique" looking big ali (that I know from my area) was already back in the harbour, heading for the retrieve ramp, presumably after snapper bashing with the other 4000 other boats in Cockburn. said to my mate how nice the boat was, gave them a wave and kept on our way. 4 hours later..... Around 8pm, as we were retrieving, a "unique" looking boat of the same name, make, colour, and appearance (ie: the same boat), was re-launching to head back out there again..... You can't point the finger without proof, but it's obvious that at this time of year, this time of night, and at this ramp, 99% of boats launching are going for one thing. Snapper.... I reckon It's a pretty sad day when it comes to some boats bein out there every night, but when boats are doin the double-dip in one day, it won't take long for the powers-to-be tighten their grip a bit further.

Cockburn Snapper OR Cockburn Smasher ?

Well what an interesting afternoon. I thought I would go chase Pink Snapper in Cockburn sound for a few hours after work with my dad and younger sister. All I can say is what a fuckin joke, ive never seen so many arrogant asshole fishoes in my life , and wont be doing it again.

We were there all afternoon and joined five other boats. All having decent respect for each other in terms of fishing space not cutting in front of each other or gettting too close behind their boat etc. Then about 20 other boats rock up NO respect for anyone already fishing the gravel patch , coming within 5-10 metres of the back of peoples boats dropping anchor, and well as you can imagine the shit hits the fan.

Abuse , knives ,tomohawks all come out. As well as alcohol which doesnt mix. What a fucking joke. People have no respect of others ALREADY fishing  . All i can say is i wont be suprised if there isnt someone who gets seriously hurt. Especially when boats and all the yobos get back to the boat ramp and fists and words fly together.

It got to the point where I was like I would love to catch a decent pink snapper dad but im not dealing with this bullshit. So we left.  Sorry bout my rant and rave but some people are just F***ED. Its fishing. its meant to be enjoyed and people should respect each other.  cheers.

Deckie

Anyone need a deckie ? Im really keen to go out and get onto some decent fish, and to test a new combo aswell , pay half fuel , bait etc all the usuals cheers. Jono

Trolling speed?

:D Would this be fast enough?

Posting this to the Friday funnies is beyond my computing abilities. Don't understand why it's not possible to have the 'upload image' function for replying to topics.

New to boat fishing

Hey just bought a 12 ft tinny and was wondering if any one could me out with some decent spots to start of with I live in leeming so I'm pretty close to the sound, and also is there any where you can get big fish without being miles out ? Cheers

lazy day on the water

went out with Muldy this morning off mindarie, looking for big skippy and a pinkie or two, same as last week bugger all except big fat sand whiting some pushing 30 cm, got our bag, ahh well nice fillets in bread crumbs before the footy tonite. any one have any good whiting recipes where you don't need to fillet them

Cockburn Sound Last Night

Was in the sound yesterday arvo/evening caught some squid and a nice cuttley then decided to try for some snapper. Went to the ledge to find at least 25 boats anchored up real close. Stayed there for a bit but caught nothin so left only to get to the boat ramp and here from fisheries that people were killin the pig out there!!

Must not have been our night i guess!!

Snapper - 5, Me - 0

Hi guys,

I know everyone probably gets sick of this topic this time of year, but this is a last resort :)

I'm starting to think this annual snapper run is a myth that BCF and the big companies have made up, to encourage people like me to spend all my hard earned on new tackle and bait!

Beleive it or not, I have tried to catch these things over the past 3 years, and have had no wins. The closest I got was seeing a massive school of big pinkies on the drop off in the Wanrbro Sound, during the ban. Enough to encourage me to keep going.

Have mostly been trying at night in the Cockburn Sound. Have tried following the boats, anchoring and burleying, sounding around the usual spots but have yet been able to crack a pink.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to try again, my current thoughts/options in my 4 mtr tinny are:

1) Try Cockburn Sound again (in and around Garden Island)

2) Try Warnbro Sound in close (Search the drop off and the tyre wreck)

3) Head out to te Five Fathom and try a mix of drifting and "anchoring and burleying"

4) Go to the pub and watch the world cup rugby, then the AFL, but bets on the hourses then pass out

If you were in my shoe's... what would you try?

Appreciate any advice blokes!

What to buy?????

Hi, I would like some advice on a good rod and reel set up to be used for bream, whiting, flathead in the salt and I'll do a bit of freshwater also for redfin and yella's.  I't do mostly light work but I'd still like to be able to maybe swap rods for some heavier action.  I'm in two minds to just bite the bullet and get myself either the stella 3000 or 4000fe, or a bimaster fb 2500 or 4000.  I'd like a bit of length in the rod as a few of the spots I fish, I need to reach out a tad, what would some of you guy's recommend.  My options are open.

Pink Snapper Closure

hi guys, got a couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with

am I correct in thinking that the fishing for pinkies in the Cockburn and Warnbro sounds is closed from October 1st until 31st January ?

is it still legal to fish for pinkies outwith these two areas ?  for example around the 5 fathom or Rottnest ?

I am still new to fishing in this area  so any info would be great

soft plastics at night

Hi all, was just wondering what peoples opinion's were on SP's for night fishing. In particular out wide for demersals. (40m ish)

La Niña forecast, but milder than last season?

The news today mention that a La Niña event w3as forecast again this season, but not as extreme as last seasons.

I haven't seen anything about how thats going to relate to the Indian Ocean Dipole because most of the forecastings about whether or not QLD is going to be nuked again, not if we're going to get another fast fish dose.

Fingers crossed!

Weather forecast this Saturday

Hi all

I've been watching Seabreeze and Saturday doesn't look too bad, windwise, but the seas are pushing 2m so it could get a bit lumpy out there.

I was thinking of taking a run down to the Bouvards instead of going out wide....closer to shore might offer a bit more protection than being 20 miles out.

Anyone else thinking about going for a fish this Saturday....what's your take on the forecast??

regards
rusty...

landbased shark fishing

hi guys, i'm looking to catch my first landbased shark but i don't know how to actually do it. i know you should have some heavy gear but i dont know how to get the sharks interested. should i go off rocks or off the beach.

do you just burley up heaps and just wait or is there other things to go with it.

by the way i live in busselton so going down to dunsborough isn't a problem.

deeper water sambo's , skull drag or slowly slowly

which do you think is better for the fish on release , considering  both points , being : -

the harder you go on them , the harder they go on you (so tireing the fish out more)

or

if you use lighter gear and angle them up they go easier on you (but having them fight softer longer)

(take poss sharking out of the equation)
