Have picked up a few over the years.  That one is a great table size fish, the head would go down a treat in a fish head claypot dish - Yum!

Age?

Sun, 2011-09-25 17:31

Think they grow the orange colour as they get older/ bigger or as Till says due to sex change. Never seen a real big one down south that wasn't orange.

I was always told these were venus tuskies, but more than likely wrong.  Been a loooong time since I've seen a southern species... ;)

personally ive never caught a large baldy that was orange, the biggest orange 1 ive caught was about 50cm and was lighter colour than some of the low to mid 40cm orange 1s ive got,

my opinion is that they loose that orange as they get bigger, some earlier than others possibly depending on depth and bottom type. up north ive landed a lot of small orange 1s 40-45cm off the flat coral bottom but the bigger 1s are all green or pale brown yellow so far...
