Land based- north or south

G'day lads

been doing some thinking lately and with my 21st bday coming up early next year I'm thinking about doing a big land based trip! I've done some research and I'm looking at either up north to steeps quobba or dirk hartog or south to the ledges in Albany combined with salmon at cheynes like I did this year.

I would like to hear you experiences and opinions on this as I've been reading some epic reports from here and to be honest I'm really confused as to which will be the best.

Preferably I'd like to do the trip either jan/feb before Uni or June/July during mid semesters. 4x4 will be available.

Cheers for any input lads looking forward to replies!

Seagate hyper spin reel

Anyone tried one of the above reels. -thoughts or bite the bullet and pay more for a catalina

does anyone know the differences between this reel and a catalina. 5000 size

Launching in the Swan

Could anyone tell me where's best to launch boat in the swan river. I'm looking to bring the family for a bit of a cruise round the city. I have seen people launching at point Walter but it looked manic with the amount of trailers every where.

Cheers,

Stewart

Rod Holder

I have these type of alloy rod holders installed by the previous owner on the back of my boat. Is anyone using these or tried these for trolling. Especially for Exmouth for Mackies, rankin cod, Coral Trout etc. If so how did they go-comments please?

I do have two normal in-mount gunnel rod holders (Not shown in this pic -The black holders are for the bait board). I want at least 3 rods out the back without cutting more holes in the boat thus thought I may be able to use these alloy holders??

3 Mile Still Pink

After 10 days of frustration, we finally got to go out to our favorite 3 Mile pink spot tonight.  Left work early as the wind was easterly and fairly low to hit the water when the sun was still in the sky.  After an interlude at the ramp where a photographer wanted to use the Hornet as a prop for a promotional shoot about a local children’s drama presentation (how could you reasonably refuse), we got out there about 5.30pm.  Young Pinky Master (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/young-pinky-master) had decided that staying at a mates place and going to a party with lots of young pinketts was a better proposition, so I managed to con my eldest boy into being the deckie – a big win as it is quite hard to get him to come out and without a deckie it is very difficult to net the big pinks – and I got stood up by a work mate.  My latest batch of homemade burley is a good brew, with steady release into a not so strong current, and we set up eagerly awaiting the sun going down.

On cue,  the pinks came on at sunset.  The first run was dropped but next cast with the floating pillie hooked up.  After a solid tussle, a 77cm pink was netted skillfully by the “ring in” deckie.  Following that, it was a bit depressing as for the next 20 minutes we lost 3-4 good pinks being “rocked” or dropped due to operator error – fairly amateur effort when I look back on it really.  As there was only one licence on board it would have been good to land a second one, but by the time we had re-rigged they were gone, as was the burley.  We followed up with snook, rays and sharks but when the cold wind picked up it was time to come in.

Another 3 Mile experience where you get a quality fish in a short period of time.   How good is near shore pink fishing in WA – and my east coast mates still hate the photos I regularly send them.

Lowrance 7 HDI transducer help

I need some advice on a transducer installation, this is my second transducer that has s#@t itself, it just stops picking up a signal, I have a sneaky suspicion it got water in it somehow!!!
Both of them worked fine when first installed, but after about 15 trips with the boat, it just stops and flashes 0.0 depth with no image.
Any advice would be appreciated

Lifting fish by the gill plate

This seems to be an accepted practice by many of us with the understanding that as long as you don't get your hands close to the gills themselves it is OK. This practice has been questioned on another website and comments made that marine biologists are united that any hands (wet, dry or covered in a wet rag) inside the gill plate will damage the gills.
After a short search of the web I have been unable to find any conclusive evidence, either pro or anti from any creditable authority with respect to this practice. Any marine biologists or others out there that would care to comment.

Albany

 Hi,

i'm heading to Albany on the weekend with mrs and she doesnt mind me taking a rod with me. Was just wondering if its too late for salmon down there?

also, can you point me out to some good fishing spots and if too late for salmon what else is down there this time of year?

Has anyone been there in the last few days?

thanks heaps. Hopefully one day when i learn more i can pass the knowledge to a beginner like me.

PS will all be landbased, no boat

Camp oven

Not fishing or boating related.  But I am bush camping this weekend and just want to borrow a large camp oven.  Ours is only 2 quart and a bit on the small side for a roast.  If anyone in the ellenbrook area has one they would lend me it would be much appreciated!

Pink snapper

 Hey everyone!

i have recently found a passion for catching pinkies on soft plastics hard bodies and even just floating a mulie. Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction with rods reels line etc.. That will be ideal for lure fishing soft and hard bodied to target snapper.

cheers

Lowrance Elite-7 HDI

My trusty old Navman died today. I've been thinking of getting the lowrance. Would you recommend the lowrance?

Mandurah Stones - Pinkies

With all the recent reports of snapper being caught off most metro rock walls, was wondering if anyone knows of any being caught around Mandurah? Dawesville?

My old man has had a go a couple of times, but not caught or, and not heard of any caught from others down there. Plenty of herring about tho!

Cheers
Bodie

Nav lights position?

Salmon moving back south

Watched a reasonable school of salmon move through not far off the beach in Busso this morning around 08:45. One guy moved across in a dinghy to try for them, but didn't see him land any, then it became apparent why when 6 or 7 dolphins started rounding them up and ripping through them. Got a bit of it videoed on my phone as did a couple others in the car park at the time. Right place at the right time.

Cheers

Dale

What knot to join braid to braid for mainline

Im joining 2 half used spools of braid to make a whole. What knot is best for this that would maintain maximum line strenghth? Also it wont be used for casting so doesnt have to be a slim knot.

Eastern Lizards

With the lack of recent fish photos, well from me at least due to this crap weather in Perth, a good mate of mine from over east has been taking the opportunity to bombard me with his awesome lizard captures.  I must admit that I have been pissing my mates off with the WA pink photos that get texted as soon as possible, well within 1 minute I guess, far and wide with comments about how good the fishing is here.  I particularly like it when we get multiple captures and can keep the texts flowing – the replies just seem to get more abusive as time goes on.  I even got this pink card as a sign of appreciation.  Anyway, I digress.

My mate is a big lizard legend.  He works at the BP Bulwer Island Refinery (that one that is closing so that is not good) and his work mates call his office the Bulwer Island Bait Shop.  He has worked there for years and if you don’t know it, it is located at the mouth of the Brisbane River.  As a keen fisho he has the local conditions sussed right out and this time of year is renowned for the lizards.  They seem to school up on the mud flats and can be caught in big numbers through May and June – he always sticks to the bag limit however.  He is a soft plastic light gear guru and targets them before work, during lunch and after work from land that the general public are not allowed to access – lucky bastard.  I know the lizards (crocodiles) don’t get as big here so thought members might like a look at some of the eastern images.  He did admit that the WA pinks are something special however.  Kilos of flathead fillets has got to be good.

Leeman Advice

 Hey crew,

Im headed up to Leeman this weekend and have checked out the search function, but this weekend looks like a cold front may pass through saturday and dunno beyond.  We are taking up the bathtub dinghy about 14 ft.  Obviously will be assesing the conditions when we get there, but what are the ramps like? I have read there may be a new ramp, but it was not completed by easter? What condition is the other ramp in, we will have a Nissan patrol for launching, but if the swell is 2mt+ is launching and navigating the passage an option?

Any advice welcome, happy for beach tips if the weather is crap also or even inshore tips for squid and bread and butter fish.

Bryan
