Crew for Exmouth 2012 comps
Submitted by seaswirl on Wed, 2011-10-26 14:02Need crew for 2012 Exmouth fishing comps. Last years crew is welcome. (AIBT March 19-23)...(Gamex March 10-17). (Fishwrecked March 31-April 2nd) Or we can go to Exy and just have fun! My boat fishes well with 3-4 persons. We fished the Fishwrecked comp last year and had a lot of fun. We stayed in Exmouth for 10 nights. We spent about $2000 each. I have found from past experience that a budget of about $200-$250 per day, usually covers everything. The biggest expense is fuel, but thats the price you pay to have a boat that can go out on the days that others stay at home. The Boston Whaler 255 conquest is a big heavy firberglass boat, she is powered by twin 225 mercury outboards making her very fast ( 40knts+ ) Completley rigged for game fishing with outriggers, downrigger, gamechair, livebait tank, in floor fish boxes, chartplotter. lowrance HDS 10 sounder, radar, sat phone for extra safety, 2 VHF radios, stereo sound system, toilet and lots of rod holders......just need crew to fish her in Exmouth.....so, who wants to go...(thats a silly question).....who has the time and money???....if thats you, pm me and we will catch up...
PS, If there is enough interest I will consider renting a house in Exy for the month of March and rotating crews in and out....

Women and fishing
Submitted by crasny1 on Wed, 2011-10-26 08:08Now I have fished for almost 40yrs, and I am always surprised how even novices females on the boat score better than the novice males. And as to someone who know how to fish (much less time than me) its a challenge to keep up.
Now the question, is it the same with you guys/girls, or is it their gentler less macho approach to the strike etc. maybe more patience but I just dont know?
Just for a fun discussion.

Unusual fish catches, sightings in marinas?
Submitted by GlennO87 on Tue, 2011-10-25 22:04I know a few people on here have caught some weird things in marinas. Needed to get out today just took the flick rods down to AQUA at Hillarys with a mate, fished off the jetty, few small whiting, what was interesting is my mate reeled in his whiting, following it was a Yellowtail King Fish, about 3ft long, fat, and probably 2-3kg. Thing came in twice following whiting, its fins lit up blue under the water, with bits of yellow coming through and the body a greenish colour.....Was odd but very cool to see. Spun me right out.
anyone else seen or caught anything ?

Swan River Bait Traps
Submitted by Graeme76 on Tue, 2011-10-25 19:08Does anyone know if it is legal to use a bait trap in the Swan River? Those drum style ones with the funnel openings in each end. I've searched the fisheries website but all I could find out is that there is a limit of one per person & no mention of what waters they could be used in.

which charter in perth?
Submitted by edthl on Tue, 2011-10-25 18:37Hi,
I'm new here and i'm looking to go on a fishing charter in Perth. Can anyone recommend me someone or some company which focus more on fishing itself rather than comfort etc...
I've been to a few charters which are located somewhere else and most have been disappointing. (meaning they are more orientated towards families having a good time or towards non anglers who are happy getting any fish of any size.) I'm looking for pure sport fishing. i'm sure you guys know what i mean.
Read pretty good reviews about Mills charter but i'm just afraid they'll be the former. So any suggestions? All are welcomed.
btw, casting for pelagics on light tackle is my kinda thing. ;)
Cheers,
Ed

How many rods do you take Boatfishing
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2011-10-25 14:15When we first came up here (Dampier) the boat looked like a porcupine on steroids. I had a rig (basically) for any sitiation possibly encounterable. That was 2 light spin, 2 medium spin, 2 BB rigs, One designated floater OH, 3 trolling overheads (the floater a little lighter) and a 10wt and 8 wt saltwater fly combo.
Refined a lot over the time, so now 2 medium/light spin for tuna casting, squid, placky sport. BB outfits can double as trolling, especially the Stella 8000SW and Mrs Saragosa 8000 ( prefer to use the 2 OH and the stella, with the stella on the short corner, biggest OH shotgun) and one of them doubles as a floater. Cant put away the fly, but now only the 10wt ( you just never know when a saily rocks up, and I would be happy overgunned than under.
Just wonder whether everyone culls their list like me, or what do you take???

EDIT: it for 2 fishos

Prawn Trap(s)?
Submitted by Francis on Tue, 2011-10-25 14:03Hi guys,
Is there such a thing as a "prawn trap"?
I've done some research on google and haven't really been able to find anything that would fit what I'm looking for.
I have heard a lot about these things called "leader prawns" that spend a lot of time on the drop off near where I live, however I'm told the only way to get them is to dive at night. Not sure I feel like fighting off 3-5mtr noah's just to get a feed of big prawns... got me thinking if there were any alternative ways to catch them.
Keen to hear what you guys think!

Is this for real or about right for this boat
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Tue, 2011-10-25 12:41I was checking out boatsonline and saw this come up as just been listed. If this price is correct, it seems very cheap.

Shark Attack Prevention
Submitted by chris raff on Mon, 2011-10-24 18:50Created this new thread to hopefully induce some constructive advice regarding the topic of the moment...it's not about saving or killing the sharks so don't go there.. theres enough of that already...it's about ideas to maybe help resolve or alleviate the problem...
1) Preventative measures that could be taken by beachgoers surfers divers yakkers when going in the water...eg time of day , particular months , shark shield info , is there ways of determining if sharks may be around etc...what are the ways to reduce the risks when the water..
2) The bigger picture... is there a good way of keeping the sharks away or knowing when the sharks are in close...eg is it tagging sat tracking...nets...one big mother shark shield...should we pen a few up in a large area and do an intensive study...more flybys

Easterly Winds = Poor Fishing?
Submitted by Graeme76 on Mon, 2011-10-24 15:04I fish pretty hard & it's very rare for me to miss out but I've been drawing blanks since these easterly winds started up a week or so ago. I've chased Flathead, Tailor, Tarwhine, Mulloway & Black Bream over the last week & missed out on each trip. I can't remember a time when I couldn't catch a Black Bream it's been that long since I missed out on them. Looking back through my fishing log I can see a pattern of less fish when the easterly winds are blowing & I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing?

Fishing fundraiser in November
Submitted by scottywiper on Mon, 2011-10-24 13:30Hi guys,
Hopefully the whole angling community can get behind this, should be a great night for a good cause. It is a fishing fundraising evening, with all money raised going to cancer research. Plenty of fishing industry support already.
We are just finalising the details over the next couple of days.
But here is the info as it stands...
What: Fishing Fundraising Dinner
When: Sunday, November 27, 6pm onwards
Where: Terrazza Cafe, 767 Canning Highway, Applecross
Cost: $65 per head
Bookings: Pay at the door, or group bookings to Al Bevan on 0412 131 958
Info: A night of fishing tales tall and true for a good cause. Former Channel 9 personality and keen angler Mike Thomson will MC, and there were be a number of prominent angling identities in attendance. There'll be raffles and auctions on the night.
All funds raised will go to cancer research.
ALSO, we have 20 spots on three charter boats - Shikari, Saltwater Charters and one more - available on the day. Again, all funds raised to cancer research.
The cost for this special fishing day includes dinner and is $350 per head, we will have the spots for sale on the WAngler website ASAP and it will be first in, best dressed. Will put up a post when these spots are for sale. Anglers will be randomly allocated to each boat, but all boats will be fishing together on the day.
Furthermore, we will auction off six spots, two on each boat, on Ebay closer to the event. These spots will go to the highest bidder and each winning bidder will also pick up a brand new jigging outfit as well. Dinner is of course included as well.
