Jurien Soft Plastics Saturday 11th
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2010-09-12 12:56Well lads, back from Jurien a bit earlier than expected, after booking Whitey's tug for both Sat and Sunday, but it turned out to be too windy today, so only fished the Saturday. Dissapointed??? Not one bit!
Waiting for the remainder of photos to be sent down from Whitey, and will get Tim VB to post up a full report of the day with photos, but I will provide a quick set of highlights.....
- early morning start, met Whitey and deckie Matt.....top fellas....had a giggle at Whitey's pissy little outfit hanging from the roof of the boat.....more later, but suffice to say I was proven wrong!
- bacon and eggs on the boat on the way out......nice start!
- first spot for a bit lof Sambo action......not one hit......hmmmm, bacon and eggs taste still in the mouth so OK....
- time for some live bait catching.....Whitey and Decky Matt get out some live bait rigs with multiple flashers....cool.....load up on livies......back to interest some Sambos.....
- all of us drop a livey over.....all hooked up....I had three livie drops for three sambos....Stella 10,000SW well and truly christened, after 30 minutes all the other lads were winging about sore arms so time to move to some demersals.
- Next two spots yielded a few small pinkies and baldies.....got my first baldie on and artifical....small octojig on light OH gear. Dropped a nice likely dhu on the Tierra 4000 and McCarthey paddle tail after it made a fnal dash for its hole after 5 minutes of to and fro......leader came back shredded....bugga! Whitey suffered the same fate several times on what can only be described as the lightest jig outft I have ever seen......0.7FE 5 ft rod and piddly 2500 reel running 15 lb line....even more on that later!
- Next move.....sounder looks pretty ordinary, 50-60 m deep with fish on the sounder but nothing too exciting, but a slight whisper that this could be a dhu spot.......out with the McCarthy 10 inch shad much to amusement of the other lads....calls of pink dildo were stll resonating in my ears as I dropped it over the side...
- Next 30 minutes weree pandamonium......dhuies coming left right and centre all but one on soft plastics. Tally for me was 3 drops for 3 dhu's, 80, 50 and 40 something all on the pink dildo.....let the 50 go as it was obvious from the bend on the other guys rods bigger ones were coming.
- Next up was a 68 cm dhu frm Tim VB about 30 seconds after mine....nice work, high fives all round, then finally Matt L was on to something good, and an 85 cm dhu on a McCarthey paddle tail was hoisted up.....much love on the baot by now.....Whitey was in the corner, and his tiny rod was bent over big time....we all thought maybe a 500 gram western king wrasse (hahaha).....but 15 minutes later after a FANTASTIC fight and top work by Whitey, up comes a 88 cm 12 kg dhu.......WOW!!!!!!!!
- After a few more pup dhu came up, which were all released carefully (Whitey and Matt are absolutely dedicated to releasing properly...nice to see) we left the dhu spot, we really had pulled more than enough from there anyhow.
- Next spots, Cliff nailed a nice 70 cm pinky (best for the day) and a few more small baldies, one on a gulp by Geoff, we headed back for one last arm stretch on sambo's.
- 15 minutes of shear Sambo madness followed....at one stae, I think all on board were hooked up o a sambo. GREAT STUFF. After a few minutes of nothng, I succumbed and out came the Smitth Jacknifer 300 g.....all $40 worth.......got shamshed about 30 m frm the bottm and then it was on.....I ooked at my Stella 10000 and thought, no way is this baby getting away....WRONG! With drag set at 25% of the 50 lb rating of the pro braid, after geting about 15 m back on the Sambo, it took off on a sizzling run that made a mockery of the Stella drag......got absolutely toasted on the wreck, leadr shredded ! Quick bimini under duress and new 80 lb leader to antoehr jig, drop, bang, bust off.....repeat....bang, bustoff....hmmmm, seems the first 20 m of braid had been damamged n the wreck as well......me being a slw learner, it took $50 worth of jigs to realise.
- Pete got a double hader of very sizable Sambo on bait....nice net work Matt!!
- Final tally, 5 dhu, 6 baldies, several nice pinkies, too many Sambos to count all released bar one small one, numerous pinkies released (a fair few in the legal 41 - 50 rane but we released most of em as we had plenty offish), and probably 8 small dhu's released. Well over 50 fish for the day I think Whitey said.
- We had four guys on bait all day, 2 on artificials all day (except for one brief livie sesion) and Whitey half the day on artificals, the other half driving the boat and takig photos. Bait outfished artificials for pinkies no doubt, baldies were 4 bait, 2 artificals, dhu were almost all soft plastics. McCarthy the standout for sure, deadly on dhu. Fankies, evergreen caprice etc were given a fair go but only two hookups but none landed. Certainly the best fish were landed on artificials except the 70 cm pinkie on bait.
Best charter I have been on, and glad I stayed on artificials all day, thanks to Whitey and Matt's guidance and enthusiasm. Whitey and Matt are a great team. Big thanks to Whitey, 6 blokes with big smiles.
Photos to come
John

Boat insurance
Submitted by pale ale on Thu, 2010-09-09 11:49Hi Guys,
Just bought a new boat and was wondering which organisation people are using for insurance. Some other questions are:
Do you get cyclone cover? (Im in Karratha)
What if ya engine dies? (possibly from watery fuel - common up here)
How secure do you need to have the boat to be covered for theft?
Tackle loss? (what if my tiagra goes overboard?)
Towing on the road?
If I hit a rock and my prop / gearbox is damaged, will they cover the whole repair?
Do they have an allowance for the "Pilbara Tax" where a $500 job will cost $900?
I have never had boat insurance before, so would appreciate some advice.
THANKS

Top end fishing charters
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2010-09-09 07:58Am looking around at live aboard charters in the top end for sometime next year, somewhere between Derby and Darwin.
Has anyone ever been on any up there? any good or bad experiences?
Im assuming the best time of year is the same as karratha weather wise?, altho im guessing the tides and the wet season probably play a bigger part.
Looking at a 6-10 day charter if possible?
Cheers
Jurien Trip this weekend
Submitted by JohnF on Wed, 2010-09-08 21:51Well guys, leaving the boat home this weekend and heading up to Jurien to fish the weekend with Whitey together with TimVb and a few lads from work. Got both Sat and Sunday booked. Plan is for a mix of jig, softies and if necessary (read failure of previous) stinking bait......
Taking the 50 lb Stella/Seed jigging outfit, 15 lb Tierra 4000 spin for softies and 20 lb Calcutta 400 O/H for octo's/lucanus and heavy softies and light jigs. Got usual selection of Smiths/Williamson jigs for Samberjacks, a bunch of gulp 5 and 7 inch and snapbacks and a 6 and 10 inch mcarthys plastics with jig heas from 0.5 to 4 oz......
Am waiting for a few fankies etc from the web....looks like they wont make it in time.............
Weather is looking great Sat (10 knots), terrible Sunday (20 knots). Question is.....is 20 knots to much in Whitey's tug......we wont care if it is wet and rough.....just want it fishable...
Responses welcome, and any advice and tackle/jigs and anything else you guys who have been up with Whitey.
Cheers
John

All the boaties out there
Submitted by JGS on Wed, 2010-09-08 18:18Just wondering as to what conditions you guys with boats would call your "cut off limit"
for example really keen to go fishing but swell too big, wind too strong.
I know the answer to this will be extremely varied because of size of boat
experience etc. Just keen to get peoples ideas and personal thoughts.
thanks
