Fujinon Stabilized Binocular Review 14 X 40
Submitted by SailFishQuepos on Fri, 2010-09-24 07:42I just got a new pair of the Fujinon Stabilized Binoculares off of Ebay and spent about 1150 after shipping. Before I bought them I couldn't find any current articles on here or anywhere else of people who had them so I thought we need to fix that!
I use them from the tower driving station while the boat is on Autopilot and they are crazy effective. In the past where I can just see a boat on the horizon, now I can identify who it is and if they're moving. Helps alot to know whether it is a long liner putting out line or if it is another sport-fisher on the fish. You can pick out birds really well on the horizon where it would be impossible otherwise. It's kind of fun, because I think my mate has the best eyes for spotting stuff of anyone I've been around and now it's no contest. The first day out, before I even left the dock, I could see Bonito jumping at 2 miles away while I was waiting on the customers. In addition, they don't burn batteries like I thought. I use them off and on so it's hard to say how long the batteries last, but I make it through the full day with good batteries and just recharge them at night for good measure. The first day out I brought 12 batteries thinking they would burn them fast and that isn't the case.
The case is freaking awesome. They come with a pelican hard case and it's awesome. Enough said.
I spent forever researching them before I bought them and I found these have 5 degrees of stabilization where the canons only had one degree. Obviously 1 degree wouldn't work in the tower in even flat weather. They take 48mm camera filters if you want a UV filter or polarized filter to save your eyes. The polarized filter is a little dark, and if you don't give everything time to heat up they fog really bad. i have to let the lenses heat up (after being at the house in the AC) or they instantly fog and you can't see anything. If you don't use a filter, fogging isn't too big of an issue after you figure out to keep your eyes a little off of the eyepieces.
They do make me a little bit seasick, but it's minimal. That says alot though as we fish 220+ days a year, and that doesn't include the days off which are usually spent in at least some part on the boat. I hasn't gone away yet, but I haven't had many trips with these yet so hopefully that will go away.
In short, if you want to find more fish, use these. On my last trip, they turned what could have been a 0 afternoon into a 13 Dorado and 5 Wahoo afternoon. I pretty much can always find something each trip with them, and won't be out on the water again without them. Two Thumbs Up!

Mulloway from shore
Submitted by buschy on Thu, 2010-09-23 19:26Hi everyone,
It's not another "how to catch a mulla" thread. There is heaps of discussion on new moon vs full moon fishing for mullas from shore and I have my own theory about when the best time to fish is. I'm trying to test this theory and having only caught the one myself, I need to hear from people who have caught a mulla in the past.
So if you've ever caught a landbased mulla (not offshore) and want to share your story - I'd be really keen to hear from you. I'm chasing the date of the catch - and that's all. However, if you happen to know the approximate time and the rough size of the mulla that would be appreciated.
I've scoured the forum and pulled out 15 threads dating back to 2005 however need a heap more data to test my theory out.
Just for those who are interested in solunar theory and use the Angler's Almanac, I'm looking at other astronomical factors to predict firstly the level of aquatic activity and hopefully specifically whether mulloway should be on the prowl.
May well prove to be a junk theory...but that's where you come in. :-)
Thanks
Buschy

20-30lb braid??
Submitted by danno on Thu, 2010-09-23 19:22hey all.
just a quick question.
i bought a bario 11ft 6-15kg rod about a month ago and im about to buy a 8000 sphero reel.
now for the question, do you think 20-30lb sunline super PE braid would be better hoping to get 300m of line on it. the fish i want to be targeting is tailor, salmon, bonito when around, but also the chance of mulloway and also land the odd small shark.
what do you guys think?
cheers

genetically engineered fish
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2010-09-23 12:06
News.com.au September 21 2010

This Chinook salmon proves Mother Nature still has a few freaky tricks left in her bag. Source: California Department of Fish and Game
TINKER with the genetics of salmon and maybe you create a revolutionary new food source that could help the environment and feed the hungry.
Or maybe you're creating what some say is an untested "frankenfish" that could cause unknown allergic reactions and the eventual decimation of the wild salmon population.
The US Food and Drug Administration hears both arguments this week when it begins a two-day meeting on whether to approve the marketing of the genetically engineered fish, which would be the first such animal approved for human consumption.
The agency has already said the salmon, which grows twice as fast as conventional salmon, is as safe to eat as the traditional variety.
Approval of the salmon would open the door for a variety of other genetically engineered animals, including an environmentally friendly pig that is being developed in Canada or cattle that are resistant to mad cow disease.
"For future applications out there the sky's the limit," David Edwards of the Biotechnology Industry Association said. "If you can imagine it, scientists can try to do it."
AquaBounty submitted its first application for FDA approval in 1995, but the agency decided not until two years ago to consider applications for genetically engineered animals - a move seen as a breakthrough by the biotechnology industry.
Genetic engineering is already widely used for crops, but the US government until now has not considered allowing the consumption of modified animals.
Although the potential benefits - and profits - are huge, many individuals have qualms about manipulating the genetic code of other living creatures. Genetically engineered - or GE - animals are not clones, which the FDA has already said are safe to eat. Clones are copies of an animal. With GE animals, their DNA has been altered to produce a desirable characteristic.
In the case of the salmon, AquaBounty has added a growth hormone from a Chinook salmon that allows the fish to produce their growth hormone all year long.
The engineers were able to keep the hormone active by using another gene from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout that acts like an on switch for the hormone, according to the company. Conventional salmon only produce the growth hormone some of the time.
In documents released ahead of the hearing, the FDA said there were no biologically relevant differences between the engineered salmon and conventional salmon, and there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from its consumption.
Critics have two main concerns: The safety of the food to humans and the salmon's effect on the environment.
Because the altered fish has never been eaten before, they say, it could include dangerous allergens, especially because seafood is highly allergenic. They also worry that the fish will escape and intermingle with the wild salmon population, which is already endangered. They would grow fast and consume more food to the detriment of the conventional wild salmon, the critics fear.
A wide range of environmental, food safety and consumer groups have argued that more public studies are needed and the current FDA process is inadequate because it allows the company to keep some proprietary information private.
Ron Stotish, the chief executive of AquaBounty, has countered that the company has more than addressed the concerns and his product has come under much more scrutiny than most food. "This is perhaps the most studied fish in history. Environmentally, this is a very sustainable technology."
The company has several safeguards in place to allay concerns.
All the fish would be bred female and sterile, though a small percentage may be able to breed.
They would be bred in confined pools where the potential for escape would be very low.

Advice on what ground to look for when anchoring for inshore snapper
Submitted by Just1morecast on Wed, 2010-09-22 19:26Hey all,
So after a good year of trying to find a big inshore snapper it still hasnt happend just after some help from the guys that are getting them inshore. To be honest im beggining to think i may be anchoring on the wrong ground. I have no problems finding ground for inshore sambo's or dhuies. Is it the same sort of ground where the snapper will be? (mostly reef/weed) or should i be anchoring close to the reef instead of ontop of it. Ive tried anchoring in 6-10m and 15-18m to vary it and both times we have caught our 2 just legals it was on the 18m ground. I normally anchor up and burley up with mulie cubes and a burley bucket over the side with half mulies and some chook pellets. So am i doing something wrong or am i just not having any luck?? As for rigs normally use a really tiny ball sinker if not any on a snelled mulie. My partner uses a paternoster with whole mulie or squid heads. Im finding skippy in plague proportions in the shallow 6-10m so seems our burley trail is keeping them around and as they are fun they can get annoying after a while.
Thanks for any advice

tackle shop
Submitted by wombat78 on Tue, 2010-09-21 21:31Whats the go with a tackle shop in melville lately.
i went in the other day was going to purchase a shimano tiagra 30 & i was looking at the shop assistants then looking at the cabinet. they didnt come over to ask if i needed assistance or anything. they just sat there talking to each other. i stayed in the shop for nearly half an hour then went to leave then they spoke to me & said have a nice day.
too easy, wont be buying much out of there any more. not only that they used to stock alot of gear now theyre running out of lots of stuff. are they trying to shut the doors or is this how service is going now. blew me away. they used to be really good but the last three times ive been in there has been the same. just hope the manager might read this & lift their game a little. ive been a costomer for a long time as well and spent thousands of dollars there over the years, just a little disappointed

Squiding- lure preference. . .
Submitted by DieHard on Tue, 2010-09-21 18:29Hey all,
before you all say have you used the search engine, yes i have and nothing conclusive.
I am slowly getting into squiding and found some ground that holds squid.
i have enough money to be a couple Yo-Zuri squid jigs.
I currently have 2 Aurie-Q ace 3.0 in pink and 2.5 in brown.
what i would like to know is what colours are preffered at night and at day.
and lastly how do you work the jig? like a soft plastic or with slow lifts etc.
Cheers,
Eric
