The Kimberley - Like Nowhere else on Earth - Help Protect it. Facebook fishing petition
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Wed, 2015-06-10 08:45Hey all,
There is a petition going around on Facebook to protect the Kimberley by implementing more no take zones that a friend of mine shared, I read through all the info and at the end it shows it is sponsored by PEW. I put up a post about their previous antics which has been deleted from the wall, also a link to http://www.westernangler.com.au/articles/editorials/695 discussing the supposed benefits of no take zones on the GBR and a peer reviewed scientific paper www.esajournals.org/doi/abs/10.1890/14-1427.1 showing that Large-scale expansion of no-take closures within the Great Barrier Reef has not enhanced fishery production. Ecological Applications.
Please be aware that PEW is at it again trying to lock us out of more areas in our own country. www.fishingworld.com.au/news/pew-admits-it-targeted-australia-for-lockouts-left-us-alone

Tropical fish usually found at Ningaloo Reef move south to feed on kelp forests
Submitted by hezzy on Wed, 2015-06-10 07:55very interesting article below , makes you wonder how this will affect other species and its southwards effect over time
hezzy
--------------------------
Tropical fish usually found at Ningaloo Reef move south to feed on kelp forests
A major climatic event has caused tropical fish that are usually found off Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef to swim south to tackle seaweed forests off the Mid West coast, marine scientists say.
The fish are in such numbers and eating the kelp with a voracity not seen before anywhere else in the world.
A team of researchers from the University of Western Australia's Oceans Institute has been studying the effects of a marine heatwave in 2011 on the temperate water ecosystem off Port Gregory.
"This is really quite novel globally," Scott Bennett said.
"Never have we seen to this scale fishes just overgraze the seaweed forests like this so this is quite unique."
The researchers translocated some kelp to a reef off Port Gregory during the study and then filmed how the fish responded.
They're now just grazing flat out on the reefs around Port Gregory and they're stopping any kelp recovery so we're seeing complete loss of kelp forests.
Mr Bennett said the kelp was consumed within hours and at a rate that was on average three times higher than had previously been observed around the world.
He said there were a couple of factors contributing to the high numbers of typically tropical fish species being found further down the WA coast and the devastation to the kelp.
"Ever since 2011, when we had a really warm summer and marine heatwave off the Western Australian coast, we found that the kelps have disappeared from quite a few reefs around Port Gregory," he said.
"At the same time as that we've had a lot of tropical fishes that eat seaweed come down the coast by the strong Leeuwin current.
"They're now just grazing flat out on the reefs around Port Gregory and they're stopping any kelp recovery so we're seeing complete loss of kelp forests."
Mr Bennett said the research is showing how extreme climatic events can effect marine ecosystems.
"The warming on its own, the kelp could possibly have recovered but the combination of the warming and the interaction between the kelp and the tropical fish from completely different ecosystems means we've got a fundamental shift in the nature of these ecosystems and it's really difficult for them to recover now," he said.
The UWA research has been tracking the interactions between the fish and the kelp for a number of years to monitor recovery and changes in the fish.
"Over the past three years we've had a really warm phase, each summer since 2011 has been some of the warmest on record," he said.
"Now that's sort of swinging back and we're going into a bit of a cooler phase and the El Nino cycle begins again and we'll see if this gives an opportunity for the kelp to recover.
"At the moment as long as those fish stick around, it looks like it'll be quite difficult for the kelp forests."

Trip to the tackle shop
Submitted by rossco21 on Tue, 2015-06-09 19:37So after all the talk on my other post about finding a rod n reel for the boss. Today I went to blue water to buy some bait and supplies for tomorrow... I thought why not ill java look at the saragosa's.. My trip to the shop ended up me walking out with a 6000 for me to use on my 8 footer for lures and in the process "test out the saragosa's for the missus before I buy her one". All in all they seem a really nice reel pardon the pun. Hopefully a salmon can crank it up for me in the morning.

Rod question
Submitted by Tunatim on Tue, 2015-06-09 07:58Hi
I've got a 7"6 ugly stick overhead rod, that I used to run on a Daiwa Saltiga overhead. I sold the overhead recently though, and have no use for the rod now. I want to know if I am able to use this overhead rod as a spin rod now? It has no trigger grip so I think it will be OK.
Also the EVA on the rod butt is really long, I want to know if I can trim it down so it's not so long? How can I do this?

Rod and reel advise for the minister of finance
Submitted by rossco21 on Mon, 2015-06-08 16:31Hi guys. So after our recent trip to coral bay and rebooking again for next year it's been decided that I will be buying a rod and reel combo for the boss. Unsure of where to start though. Here's the details. This year she used a monster mesh and a dais a dreams. It went well (wasn't too happy with the way the reel sounded). She said at some times she seemed to struggle. I then gave her a pfluger 6000 size reel on a 7/6 strudwick. She seemed to like that but seeing my old lady fishing with an old school pen overhead with level wind she said what about something like that. So what do you fellas have your partners geared up with. Overhead or spinning. Happy to spend decent coin to get something decent and something that if I need to use it I can.. She is not the strongest of females so I was thinking a rod with a bit of size to it for leverage but still unsure.. Any advise will be great
cheers Rossco

Winter crays around Rotto?
Submitted by bradz on Mon, 2015-06-08 14:25Im heading over to Rotto for an overnighter on the weekend and thought I woult take my pots.
Having not been craying during winter previously can anyone give some advice on where I should be placing them? ie, shallow, deep, on the reef, back of the reef etc.
Also, any areas I should avoid so as to have the best chance of the pots still being where I left them?
Cheers for any helpful tips.

First trip to Gnaraloo
Submitted by Paj man on Mon, 2015-06-08 11:24Hi all - I know this has been done to death but I need some re-assurance haha. I've done plenty of research on this and other forums about what to take/expect at gnaraloo and I've done up a bit of a plan of action for when we head up. If anyone can scan over the below info and offer some advice about whether I've missed anything or am on the right path, I'd appreciate it.
Car and boat; Car's ready, replaced boat trailer bearings and checked the brakes and fixing bolts (all high tensile from the last owner). I have a spare wheel, hub and bearing kit for the trailer. I've made a shade cloth type rock deflector for the front of the boat and I'm going to wrap the motor leg up before hitting the tracks too. I've only got a 27mg radio so I'm thinking about putting a VHF in before we leave?
Fuel; stopping off a mates place in Leeman and grabbing 10x20L jerries. Will more than cover our fuel consumption (for a 140hp suzuki). 90L tank in boat filled when we get to Canarvon. Plus 20L for my car on my rear bar.
Accomodation; staying at the old cabins to keep everything simple. My understanding is we'll need sleeping gear and mousetraps?
Drive in and Launching; tyre down to 25psi when we get off road and nice and easy on the way in. I'm grabbing a set of maxtrak's off a mate for launching (will use the metal grids also if req'd) and probably drop the pressures further.
Fishing; Near the reef; spangoes and tev's, Trolling; zig-zag behind the reef for mack's and tuna, 50-60m; red's and cod. I fished Coral bay a few times so I'm somewhat familiar with the ground to fish on and finding my own spots.
Gear; PE2 casting and PE2 jigging setup, Heavier rod for deeper bb and jigging, heavier casting rod for bigger fish. Trolling gear and a lighter spin setup. All for the above fish.
Lures; Sticks baits and metals for casting and laser pro's for trolling. SP's wise I have a few 7 inch and 5 inch flick baits, 7inch grubs and some paddle tails.
I think that covers most of it. I'm giving myself 2.5hrs drive from canarvon to the station.
Cheers in advance

Deep drop charter. What are your thoughts??
Submitted by reece on Mon, 2015-06-08 05:35I'm setting up a small charter boat at the end of the year to run out of two rocks and lancelin. Wanting a bit of feed back
iv got a 10m cat with twin 275hp outboards that would get customers in comfort to and from the grounds at 25knts in any weather. Supplying all top of the line shimano rods reels ect.
I'm looking at running deep drop charters when the weathers right. how many people would be interested and what would you think is a fair price range? I would probably run a maximum of 4 people ( deep drop) electric reels, rigs, bait and possibly super deep jigs with lunch and soft drinks provided
thanks for your help

Reel servicing
Submitted by lachieH on Sun, 2015-06-07 11:20hi everyone, I have been fixing up a few reels lately for my mates for practice, hopefully getting a few bucks towards a car. I have a few like my Sedona that have fallen into the drink a couple times and an old reel that has lots of sand through it which needed to be fixed. I have done these reels and even though they don't come out 100% new they come out nice and smooth and are much nicer to use. Even if the reel doesn't have anything wrong with it, I still grease up the drag and oil the bearings etc. I now fix the drag systems and if need be will replace some washers. I also take the reels apart and clean all the bits of unwanted salt water out of the reel and get all of the sand out, so that there is no grinding when winding the reel.
I currently am capable of only egg-beater style reels. I can fix most fin-nor, shimano, daiwa and tomman reels, and they have all come out much better.
if anybody wants their reel to be serviced I need a bit of pocket money so I could charge $15 + additional costs for parts.
if anybody would like me to service I live south of the river so just pm me if u r interested.
thanks,
lachie

carnarvon freezer
Submitted by scotto on Fri, 2015-06-05 14:25Yo crew. I'm nearly finished the first half of my 2 month camping trip and im stopping in to carnarvon for 2 days to restock supplies before going to gnaraloo for another month.
I was wondering if there was anywhere commercial you can store a bit of fish in a freezer somewhere? I remember exmouth had betsy's where youd pay a few bucks a kilo and theyd freeze/store it for you.
I dont have much (maybe 6-7kgs fillets ), but i dont really have space in the engel to carry it, plus all frozen meat/vegies.
Cheers.
