Fishing the north west
Submitted by Sixapeal on Thu, 2015-07-02 10:08Hi, I'm after some knowledge and advice.
August im heading to Kalbarri for few nights then up to Exmouth stopping along the way
at shark bay. I've only got a sedan and no boat l. I'm looking for places to get into some
decent land based fishing. Places like quobba and steep point are obviously out of the
question cause I won't be able to get out there.
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Owen Anchorage
Submitted by 420casts on Wed, 2015-07-01 23:05Went out and got a few good Skippy, KG, Squid, and ended up with several undersize Pinks and Sambos the other day in the tinny about 1KM off Coogee. Found some structure and the fish were on the bite. Question is, will we pick up legal size fish there of those 2 species or are we wasting time and should find a deeper location ? Any info appreciated. Also rigging / bait ideas are encouraged as we want to try some new things too. Cheers.

Putting an Offer on a Boat
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2015-07-01 20:28Is there a general rule for making an offer for a boat? I've had a look at a few forums and the 66% rule seems to be the go for making a lowball offer and whilst I am interested in making a fair offer, the current financial environment in WA and it being winter swings the pendulum in my favour somewhat.
Been keeing an eye on a few since March and they've dropped around 15-25% and just aren't moving. There's a couple that are recent to the market and my thought is I should be making an offer in line with where I've seen the others fall to.

Wednesday Fish. With maps and photo
Submitted by Swompa on Wed, 2015-07-01 19:57So making the most of forced early retirement (redundancy) I headed out for a fish today with the old man.
Launching at Woodmans point at a very gentlemanly hour of 0915, we headed out to the north western end of Garden Island to try for some of those fake pink snapper. I tried an old waypoint directly west of Herring Bay which wasn't showing any fish, so I proceeded north for half a mile to some broken ground. There were fish around though they didn't seem like our assortment of plastics. A few more waypoints were picked up over the next two hours before we headed north without anything to show for our efforts.
From Garden Island, we bashed into the 10 or so knots of NNE breeze to a waypoint I was given west of Stragglers. It was at this point my Raymarine Dragonfly decided to shit itself, lose GPS and the bottom, for around 20 minutes. Lucky for me, I have C-Map on my phone so I was able to get close to the point, though without seeing bottom, it was a bit tough.
Plastics once again did nothing for us here, and by now, last weeks squid had defrosted enough so chunks of that went down for an almost skippy (got to the boat before it got away. That and a wrasse was all we got out there, so time to head in for some squid.
Once thing that amazed me today was how filthy the water was. Once the sounder was working again, going over 4m lumps, you couldn't see the bottom. Even a 2.8m lump, you could see that it was shallow, though couldn't actually see the rock. (South of Champion rock)
We continued in to where I had previously had some luck with some nice squid, at the Windmills. Our waypoint proved initially unsuccessful though due to losing patience with squidding, I threw down a piece of squid and straight away I had a nice sixed sand whiting.
What followed was around an hour of fish after fish after fish, including small flathead, herring and even a large squid (left a jig in as we drifted). I had landed four whiting, on the same piece of bait, in the time that it took Dad to cut off his squid jig and tie on a hook.
After we figured we had enough for a feed, we headed south towards Mewstone and found another patch of weed to drift over, again landing another squid whilst ignoring my rod.
Mewstone was next for a cast in for some tailor. I lost my second, brand new stick bait on the reef (two in two days), though without catching any tailor, identified that there are still plenty of very active salmon there (casting a white Ricter plug).
Final stop was some weed just inside Mewstone which proved to be unsuccessful, so we continued home.
7 hours out on the boat for a reasonably nice feed of whiting.
Still unable to crack that Pinky curse, or anything for that matter on my waypoints off Garden Island though I will keep harassing the ocean.
Cheers

GME MT400 EPIRB Battery replacement not worth it..
Submitted by rigpig on Tue, 2015-06-30 11:01I called GME to find out about replacing the battery in my MT400 Epirb and they stated the cost is $279. The guy I spoke to then went on to say that it would be better for me to go to Whitworths where I can buy a new one (MT400) for $199 which comes with a bonus 6 years battery replacement taking it to 12 years plus you get some waterproof speaker gizmo thrown in..
Looks like it is Whitworths for me then.. crazy isn't it..

As i have taken the diawa back to the shop again to get fixed! winches cost me about $700 all up and have never let me down, no matter whats on the end it comes up! but ya get 3 fish on a daiwa and its back to poxy manual mode. but they slay the nannies! Will post pics of the build also replacing the drive shaft on my old winch for a better drag design

what a problem to have!!
Submitted by fisho-ron on Mon, 2015-06-29 19:58went out today from woodies with my mate Andy in his boat, we new it was going to be shity in the morn so we stopped of for some fresh squid before heading out.
bom, seabreaze and willy all had the winds dropping and seas easing by midday, what a load of bollocks!!!!
it did eventually ease about 3pm to a majic arvo.
anyway....
we could not get away from the dhuys today, one after another all day, we ended up getting about 16 dhus, with at least 7 of them going 60cm+, with myself returning a nice 72cm girl, only 4 or 5 undersize for the day, every new spot we went to....up came dhuys.
also 2 nice size b/ass, 50cm+ for the bag.
but the fish of the day went to Andy...a nice fat 92cm beast, his p/b by 10cm, to say the least he was stoked!!
well done Andy, thats gunna take some beating.

Donnelly River
Submitted by deig on Mon, 2015-06-29 15:31Hi All
Heading down to Pemberton next week and I see there is a small ramp at Donnelly River and wondering if anyone has used it? If so does the river flow into the ocean?
Or any other good fishing spots for the boat there?
Or any other tips on where to fish?
Is it even worth taking the boat at all?

Tranny placement - part two.
Submitted by Swompa on Mon, 2015-06-29 11:23Back on the starboard side now and ready to bolt it on again.
You can see my last efforts and they have progressively gotten worse soundings. (15 patchy knots, 10 knots, 6 knots)
Should I put it on the left or right hand side of the starboard bung?
my concern is if it is too far left then with the 60 degree beam on the dragonfly, I will always have an outboard motor on the screen.
Thoughts?
Cheers

Dunbier trailer subframe
Submitted by Dirt on Mon, 2015-06-29 11:08hey guys I made the mistake of deciding to get my trailer re galvanised about 12 months ago. We cut out and replaced 1 of the 3 cross members as it didn't pass the hammer tap test. Unfortunately the other two are already showing signs of rust. The main thing I'm pissed about is that the rest of the trailer looks brand new as I replaced axles and suspension parts. I wondering if anybody knows if there is somewhere I can just buy the subframe and swap over all my bits. The boat is 6.3 mths the trailer is dual axle full roller trailer. Anyone done or enquire about doing this. Any info would be great I'm just thinking that if this is doable it will prolong my trailer life considerably
thanks in advance

using a scaling bag to clean squid
Submitted by rigpig on Mon, 2015-06-29 09:01I watched an episode of Merv Hughes Fishing on the weekend and they were catching squid. At the end of the fishing session when they were coming in on the boat they put the squid in a scaling bag with the heads off and threw it over the side. This cleaned the squid bodies up beautifully.. anybody done this?

Northern Beaches Weed
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-06-28 13:44Feel like going for a shore bash tonight and tossing up between soaking some bait at Hillarys or throwing some poppers around Mullaloo/Ocean Reef. What's the weed situation like after the big swells? Are the northern beaches a write off?

couple of pics from our last few trips out (ocean reef/jurien bay)
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sun, 2015-06-28 11:13out from ocean reef a few weeks back before i went back to work.
took out some mates on the Saturday, very quite all day until our last spot of the day and it was Big Dhuies Galore, its a great feeling putting back 70cm+ Dhu's.
both mates picking up there personal best dhues, its a shame we could only keep 2
Niels P/B
Leons P/B
took another mate out on the Monday, another P/B for Tom, a slow day again with not alot happening, still bagged out but only just
went to jurien for a so called good weather for 2 days on Tues/Wed, turned out rough as guts and didnt get to were we normaly fish.
tues bagged out with nothing special, small dhu,baldys,pinky,b/ass.
wed was even worse than tues weather wise, didnt get out till 1pm, so we hit the wreck for some sambo jigging, ended up getting 2 nice size pinkys, shitloads of big sambos and 4 mulla/s, with this one beating the exsisting record by 1cm.
still better than being at work, i got 1 1/2 more weeks to get out again!!
Monday with Andy on his boat and maybe mid week on mine, might need a decky maybe...whos keen!!

Where to go??
Submitted by deltadreams on Sun, 2015-06-28 07:00Hi Guys,
I have family over from the "Eastern Isles" [NZ] next week and have promised to have them on the waters for a fish. I am thinking out of Mindare or Two Rocks.[Never been out of T.R.]
Having had a new boat here since August and only used it a dozen times [sad eh] so I am still learning where to go. I would appreciate any suggestions but not your favourite spots just general area, probably next weekend and after days after .
Looking at the weather it doesn't seem to bad then
Thanks in advance.

Coral Bay fishing
Submitted by wainy on Sat, 2015-06-27 18:41Heading up to Coral Bay for a week, looking for advice on fishing from a tinny, had 10 days there last year same time and failed to get onto any decent fish, ended up 10 mile out with a couple of boats but still no good apart from 1 tuna on the way back in.
Questions,
Should we stay close or get out wide, 4 meter quinny
North or South
Bait or lures
Anchor or drift
burley or not
Day or night
Would be happy with a feed of Spanglies
