Cuttlefish vs dhu
Submitted by slam on Sun, 2015-05-31 20:34Well this was a first. Had a take on the jig on Friday and couldn't quite work out what is was. Thinking maybe big dhu with big tail beats. Somewhat disappointed when up came a 350 dhu with a huge cuttlefish engulfing it. Amazing sight and huge cuttlefish. Poor dhu was very much under the weather with a rather large hole in its head! Cuttlefish let go at the top and very unwell dhu went down on the release weight probably to be finished off by his friend!

Northern Boat Ramps
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-05-31 11:32How busy are they today. Bout to head out in an hour to solo launch my dinghy and don't want to hold everyone up too much.
Would Ocean Reef be my best bet for a quick and easy launch and retrieve?

Woodman Point
Submitted by Peko on Sun, 2015-05-31 09:48Went down to Woodman Point this morning, sun shining, water pristine and turned around and drove home. Not one bay available in the main area and the overflow half full. Can you imagine what its going to be like this afternoon.
Augusta river mouth open?
Submitted by reece on Sun, 2015-05-31 07:33Dose any one know if the Augusta river mouth is open?? And would you get out in a 7.1m boat??
Im going down in September and staying on the Blackwood river house boats. I'd take the big boat of I could get out the mouth.
I i know there's a new marina but don't want to pull it out then launch at the marina then same same on the way in

Renewing your RFBL or checking if its valid?
Submitted by old salt on Sat, 2015-05-30 21:20Hey all,
I cannot seem to renew my rfbl online claims transaction unsuccessful every time? Does anyone know a way to check if the license is valid just in case a direct debit has ocurred? This is the only reason I can think of why it wont accept payment from either of our credit cards?
Kind of annoying when your fishing tomorrow?

FW member of the week
Submitted by Ashen on Sat, 2015-05-30 15:58Goes to (drum roll): sea-kem
I recently bought a secondhand bow rail for my boat but it didn't fit my boat. So I pm'd sea-kem for advice on bending the rail. He went out of his way to assess the bowrail and my boat to advise on the best method. I've successfully bent the rail to suit my boat.
Thanks again, Andy!
The bow rail came off a 18.5ft Guardian. My boat is a 19ft Penguin Huntress.

Trailer repairs
Submitted by sea-kem on Sat, 2015-05-30 13:45Finally got the boat off for trailer repairs. Back end of keel on tyres and slowly dragged out the trailer and put the stands under, have managed to keep the front end high so can slide the trailer back under easily. Replacing all the zinc plated U bolts with galv ones. Why they ever put these on is a mystery to me as they corrode quick once the coating is compromised and that affects the galv. All new rollers going on with stainless pins, the old ones will need to be cut off with a grinder as the steel pins have rust expanded in the roller tubes. I'll be double nutting everything too and readjusting the hull support slides as they were out of alignment and making the boat pull left when winching on.

Bore Pump Motor
Submitted by Peko on Sat, 2015-05-30 11:54I need to replace the electric motor on my submersible bore pump. The price currently being quoted is extremely high to what my expectations where and I wonder if you guys have any previous knowledge or experience on the actual costs. Pioneer 5A/12C submersible pump motor. Apologies for this being out of line with a fishing forum

Current
Submitted by doublej on Fri, 2015-05-29 20:42Anyone been out in the last couple of days (or week) & can shed some light on the current.
Went out last week and fished the back of the bank & the current was ripping.
Sea anchor out one side and fishing the other side with horizontal lines. Couldn't hold bottom.
Perfect day on the surface.
Actually had a cray boat pull up next to us a he said 'Every pot he's dropped in his line has taken the floats down as well'..
Anyway got f*ck all out there so we moved in and fished some lumps in the 40's.
Beautiful day on top of the water, but a bad day below...
Gonna head out again on the weekend but can't be f*cked going all that way for the same conditions..
Would go for a squid in Safety Bay but that sounds like a 'Shit" idea too.....
Any thoughts!

Sounders
Submitted by lachieH on Fri, 2015-05-29 17:33hi everyone. Just doing a bit of science study and noticed something that makes a lot of sense. I have realized sounders use sound waves to shoot to the closest object underwater, traveling at 1500m per second and when the sound hits the object it goes back up to the boat, which does the equations which tells you how far away the objects are. I found this interesting, so I was wondering how does it recognize there is a school there? How does the sounder realize that it is not the bottom?

Biggest tube went 33cm. 85cm to tip of tentacles, other slightly smaller. The large one put up the best fight from a squid ive had and towed me for a couple of minutes in and out of mornings. Great fun on a friday morning

big school of "something".. heading north from coogee to woodies friday morning
Submitted by straith on Fri, 2015-05-29 09:44hi guys,
Just sitting here at coogee working wishing i had day off to enjoy the beautiful weather when i notice big flock of birds going nutso about 1km off shore. Then i see some very big splashes and flashes of white as reason why birds are so excited.
I must be a mile or so from them at least but bodies of fish leaping are nice size even from here. School heading towards woodies.
Please someone get down there, not a soul out there atm.. Sob

Haines Hunter Breeze
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2015-05-29 07:48I am searching and saving, searching and saving for my first real boat and started looking at the 4.8m trailcraft then the 5m trailcrafts and quintrex and think I have settled on the boat that will be my target which is the Haines Hunter Breeze in the 5-5.3m around the 2003-2005 vintage.
At first I was hesitant to get a glass boat first up but with young kids I just don't want them getting belted when we get caught in a breeze and I'd like to head out deep with my bro and mates knowing it will be in relative comfort. I also want something I can solo launch and retrieve, use for some ski biscuiting and still take up river chasing dem breams.
Does anyone have the Haines Hunter Breeze in the 5-5.3m range and can give me some insight into how they handle average seas, how easy they are to solo launch and retrieve and what size donk would be the absolute minimum I should be looking at as well as anything else about them. I've found one with a nice hull but it's got a 70hp on the back which to me seems well underpowered.
