second hand braid ????
Submitted by D_d_001 on Thu, 2013-04-11 19:34See a lot of "for sale" stuff here and i like going through the forum to be honest. but when ppl are selling a reel and say "but I paid $100 for the braid alone" and "only used the braid 2 times" it sounds strange to say the least.
I have no problem with buying a second hand reel or rod but if I did then the first thing I would do is rip the line off and bin it. surely it's just a consumable.
Would anyone here actually buy a second hand reel and not respool it? for me, line on a reel adds zero value. just like when you are at the shop getting your new reel spooled and you step in and say "sorry and no offence but I'd like to tie the knot for the spool and backing thanks" (I can live with it if MY knot pulls but just cant if it pulls and someone else has tied it)
just don't think I could handle loosing that "FOALT" cos I didn't put line I could trust on my reel
Is it just me, am I being wasteful?

First bait free trip
Submitted by Clown Fish on Thu, 2013-04-11 17:47With the weather looking mint for sunday I am thinking of trying my first bait free dhu session. Thing is folks, Im feeling very anxious about not taking some form of bait and my knowledge of jigging is one step above f##k all. My best succes with placys has come from leaving the rod in the holder while rolling a champion or cracking a brew and then hooking up to fish without twiching, yanking, freespooling, etc. I am really keen to give it a go and I have reliable ground that I know produces when using bait but I need to break the ice. Would appreciate if any of you guys can give me any tips/techniques/gear I need etc? I have a rough idea about weight of jigs in relation to depth. I mostly fish depths from 30 to 45m. Would appreciate any advice or even storys about breaking away from bait. At the end of the day I think Im just paranoid about not brinnging home a feed.

Disaster Day Diving!
Submitted by Robbo88 on Thu, 2013-04-11 11:25G'day All,
Myself and a mate headed 8nm south west from the Dawesville cut around 830am to a patch of ground I found a few weeks ago in 25m of water. I’m always pretty safety concious so on the way through the cut I logged on with Mandurah Sea Rescue notifying them I would be back by 1300hrs.
Once at our location we anchor up and mark our spot to ensure we were not drifting, 10mins later its all good haven’t moved at all. Had been trying to call in to MSR to notify them we were about to commence our dive but to reply. They could hear me I couldn’t hear them (VHF 73). “Ahh well, we're logged on to return at 1300hrs if worse come to worst!”
Once on the bottom checked anchor and she was holding under a ledge beautifully! As I swam along the ledge there were crays galore, Id never been to ground this good before but Vis was Sh*t house 1.5m-2m at the max, swell was knocking us around a bit and weed was everywhere! We caught a few keepers and headed up for a safety stop.
Once on the surface the chop had picked up a bit. We looked around and no boat! Its a 5.8m Genesis so pretty easy to spot. I then heard Tryson “Ohh get F*#KED”, the boat was about 500m away. We started swimming to it but it was getting further away. At this point I made the call to off load my weights into my catch bag and give them to Tryson as I would chase the boat! I told him if gear gets to heavy drop it!
I swam west past a cray pot that we were 500m east of and at this point I was thinking survival (along with other things, never diving again was one) should I give up and hang onto the buoy? At least the pros will find me tomorrow! No I have to get that boat! I knew the wind was dropping at 11 and this would be my chance.
I got to 200m of it and I thought about dropping everything so I could smash out a freestyle and catch her, but I was exhausted and if I didn’t catch her, it would all be over. I still had my torch with my noose attached to it which I was planning on keeping to flag someone down once the sun fell.
The wind ended dropping down to 3knots and allowed me the chance to catch her! But Tryson was still out there! I got on-board dumped my gear and jumped up the front, I could hear him yelling. I pulled the anchor rope but no anchor. Either the shackle came loose or broke in the ruff conditions...
Where I caught the boat it was 1.5km from our dive mark and I spotted Tryson waving his flipper in between the two spots. If I hadn’t heard him calling when I jumped on-board I was going to radio through EMERGENCY straight away because I don’t believe you can be “To Careful” when it comes to safety on the water.
If the winds hadn’t dropped I wouldn’t have caught the boat and who knows if Id even be able to tell the story... A learning lesson to us all! Ill never leave the boat unattended again and will always log in every trip!
On a positive note, Tryson dumped his weights (and is now looking for 1 weight pocket for a Cressie BCD) but kept the Crays haha!
Thanks for reading

Reel Maintenance Help
Submitted by DhuBoi on Wed, 2013-04-10 21:42HI people , Just curious if somebody could help me with a reel problem . I have a Plueger Torsion 060 an its seems the drag clicker on it is broken, I have taken the reel apart and the tiny spring which im assuming used to be hooked up is gone. (literally disintegrated) after I hooked up to a decent sized mulloway . Is this common and could there have been anything I could have done to have prevented it , also what is the best solution to fix this can I buy the small spring to re-attach it or would the problem be something more serious ?
Cheers in advance

Buswell for Fisheries Minister?
Submitted by Auslobster on Wed, 2013-04-10 20:01Look, the "chair-sniffing/bra-snapping/dry humping Kailis at a party" shenanigans tells me he's a regular bloke...but very good at his job...reminds me of Bill Clinton. But what does he know about fisheries? Remember when Alannah was Minister for Road Safety and got done for drink driving? Call me old-fashioned but I think if you're going to make somebody the minister of something, they should have some sort of a background in that field...

Electric motors.
Submitted by beachsoul on Wed, 2013-04-10 09:57Hi thinking about getting a watersnake electric motor.........I will not be running it continuiousley much, more just to pull away from snags and re-positioning.
Has anyone had much to do with these motors. Given my intended usage will i need an expensive deep cycle battery?
Im looking at a rear mount 54lb unit for my 3.9 V hull dinghy. Do you think windage will be a problem with the rear mount compared to a front mount.
Any info will be appreciated

D9 snapper
Submitted by West coast pom on Wed, 2013-04-10 05:03Hey guys,
going for a night fish on Friday in and around Cockburn Sound; does anyone know if the D9 is still holding snapper or is it a little late in the season ie have they moved out deeper/ into open water?
I usually fish the 5 Fathom but its good to have options closer to shore at night especially if the weather picks up unexpectedly.
cheers

Five fathom bank
Submitted by joycey on Tue, 2013-04-09 21:18Hi guys,
After multiple unsuccessful trips out in 30-40m past the five fathom with drifting paternoster, I have decided on change of tactics and will try fishing the back of the five fathom bank.
Would you recommend sounding around for fish at the back of the bank and then drift ( if drift would I use drifbait or paternoster ) or would anchoring and burley be the better option?
Cheers for any tips for fishing this area.

Time in Oz
Submitted by dan the man on Tue, 2013-04-09 21:06Hi everyone,
Thought i would post on here just to say abit about my time of fishing here in Oz. First though i would like to say i saw some shocking fish handle the other night on Rocko Jetty. A Guy caught 2 stingrays and picked them up by the mouth and threw them as hard and fast as possible. Then he caught a Port Jackson and spun it around and around and launched it a good 30m. They maybe a nuisance fish but that is no way to treat fish?!
On a positive note though i have had a great time fishing over here. Iv caught rays, banjos, shovelnose, port jackson, tailor, snook, herring, whiting, kg whiting, skippy, bream, flathead, snapper, bluenose, cod and most favourite sharks. Only small being 4ft but great fun and all went back. It has been some excellent fishing with Grace Town probably being a very good highlight as herring were thick and fast.
Going back home in couple of weeks so changing from big hard fighting fish to carp so going to be abit of a diffference.
I have to say a big thank you to all the posts and info that get put onto this website as if it werent for them i would never of caught so many fish!

heading south next week
Submitted by crezz on Tue, 2013-04-09 20:57G'Day guys, heading south next week for a few days or so. ill try and take a few picks and write up a bit of material about the trip. hopefuly get a few blokes keen to travel a bit for a weekend and catch a few good fish. get keen!
after spending a few days down south we caught heaps of salmon most of them from the rocks and only a few from the beach. only saw a couple of schools go through and most fish were caught on poppers. we were casting metal slices at them all day however thay just loved the poppers. plenty of people catching them on mullies and plenty of heads on the beach. heaps of sharks around and it was only taking about 5 mins before our live salmon were getting nailed however we could not land any because the sharks kept missing the hook.
