Declining Cray and Crab stocks
Submitted by bushpig on Wed, 2008-10-29 14:27With all the evidence of declining stocks of crays and crabs in the metro and mandurah area, would anyone know where to obtain records for water testing in Cockburn and Wanbro Sound, as well as Peel Estuary and the waters around Rockingham/Mandurah, going back maye 10 or even 20 years.
I went on a 4 day live-aboard charter to the Abrolhos a few years ago, and the Skippers son (deckie) told us of a demonstration at a Fish Handling course (maybe at TAFE, not to sure now), where the students were shown how sensitive crays are to salinity changes in the water (apparently demo was a live cray in a holding tank that had some sea salt thrown in - the cray stressed to the point that it threw all it's legs in minutes).
How much of an increase in salinity is the RO Water Plant creating in the Cockburn/Rockingham area?
How much acid sulphate and other pollutants have been flushed out of the Peel Estuary since canal/marina developments started.
I remember when we first started crayfishing (recreationally) out near James Service and the Five Fathom Bank, slightly north west of Mandurah, out of Mary Street Lagoon. The pots and ropes were always fairly clean, but as soon as they started work on the new marina, the ropes and pots started sliming up with algae to the point that it was difficult to pull the pots.
All the black mud and associated crap that was dredged and pumped out of the marina has to had some affect on the fishing in the area.
With all the extra canal works completed over the last five years, has the water quality declined by any measurable degree?
Or you take a pessimists view on it all - with the looming changes in bag limits for recreational cray fishers, the increase in fuel costs, the threat of seasonal bans, "daylight savings" and the low lifes that pull your pots or steal your gear, is it really worth the effort ?
Maybe I should just send the missus to Indonesia for a cheap boob job - at least I'll have something tangible for the money!

North Mole end closed for air race media flights 29 Oct-2 Nov
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2008-10-29 12:52The end of North Mole will be closed to the public while Red Bull Air Race flights take place for media.
While visiting Perth to report on the Red Bull Air Race, selected media have the opportunity to fly in a Red Bull Air Race plane, giving them the chance to experience the excitement of the event first hand and in turn, generate positive media coverage for WA.
This year, the media flights will take place in air space over the Indian Ocean off the coast of Fremantle from 30 October to 2 November. Air gates similar to those used in the actual Red Bull Air Race will be installed for the race plane to fly through.
Fremantle Ports has given permission for the media air gates to be temporarily installed at the western end of the North Mole.
Red Bull Air Race organisers have been working closely with Fremantle Ports to ensure the media flights do not impact port operations. Flights will be scheduled around shipping and commercial vessel movements.
The media flights are scheduled between 9am and 5pm from Thursday 30 October to Sunday 2 November, with a brief practice flight on Wednesday 29 October.
For safety reasons it will be necessary to close the end of the North Mole to the public and private vehicles from Thursday 30 October to Sunday 2 November. North Mole will be intermittently closed to public traffic on Wednesday 29 October. Recreational vessels will be required to make a small diversion around the Mole during this time.
Flights will be conducted at 60-minute intervals with six to 10 flights per day. The planes will take off and land from Langley Park, Perth.
All aspects of these flights will have CASA approval. DPI Marine will manage the water exclusion zone and appropriate authorities will be notified. Signage alerting local traffic to the flights has been installed.
Further information about the Red Bull Air Race is available on the race information line on 9288 4569 or on the Red Bull Air Race website.

Access to coastal waterways
Submitted by PilbaraBrad on Wed, 2008-10-29 10:02Hoping someone can help me
i am trying to find out information regarding access to coastal creeks, rivers etc. If for example a creek on the coast is within the boundaries of a station (like many in Western Australia are) what right do the public have to access that creek from the ocean. ie. not accessing via the private land and not staying on the private land?
Hoping someone can help me out, i was under the impression that no one can own the coast and that public can access the areas as long as they did not access the land
cheers
Brad

CSIRO Sea Surface Temps
Submitted by GusG on Tue, 2008-10-28 14:37Hi All
I am not sure how many people here use the free CSIRO sea surface temperature website. If you haven't heard of it click on the link and check it out
http://www.marine.csiro.au/remotesensing/oceancurrents/index.htm
It is very useful info to see where the warm water currents are. On this linked page you wil see a message from the CSIRO regarding a petition to get help with funding of the site.
As fishos we can all benefit from this very useful site and it would be very worthwhile if you could all fill it in. Simply click on the link and put your name down, it only takes a second.
Gus
EDIT: fixed URL address. Thanks Colin.

Busselton Jetty to receive immediate funding
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2008-10-28 08:45The State Government has confirmed it will offer $24million over two years towards the restoration of the Busselton Jetty.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today announced the package, designed to offer immediate aid to the jetty free from restrictions related to the sale of Busselton land.
Mr Grylls said that should the proposal be accepted by the Busselton Shire Council, work could be start on the jetty during summer.
“Obviously this is reliant on the shire’s approval and tender process, but the offer is a positive step forward to ensuring the iconic Busselton Jetty remains as both a tourism and a financial asset to the shire,” the Minister said.
“The funding is not conditional on land development and allows the shire to proceed with finalising tenders and starting work.”

Establishing a State Record?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sat, 2008-10-25 09:56This is not something I've actively thought about whilst fishing. But having caught my PB Breaksea at 50cm and, from AAAWA list ( http://www.aaawa.iinet.net.au/StateFishingRecords.html#_B ) showing the state record as 3.000 kg, I thought the one I caught MAY have come close. Unfortunately, I didn't weigh my catcg and the AAAWA doesn't give weights.
So, what's the process in establishing a record? Do your scales have to be of a certain type (standard) and what about line class etc?
I guess if you were in a club comp and had a weight in, it would be easier to accept validity, but what about as an individual?
Info guys?

Squidding - cockburn sound
Submitted by Percula on Sat, 2008-10-25 08:43Hey guys
I am keen to do some squidding, and the weather tomorrow looks the goods.
I am just wondering where do you launch down that way, as I have never done it?
Also while squidding can you target herring and other fish, is it the same area?
Thanks!

Favoured landbased braid
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2008-10-24 11:31Sorry for another braid thread, but I am intrested in what are the favoured braids used by landbased fishos in 10 to 20 lb range.
I purchased an expensive braid yesterday to spool on my new Abu Soron spin reel that, quite frankly, it is crap.
I am a fan of Bionic Braid. Any other suggestions?
Many Thanks, Colin Hay
