Fortescue River boat launch
Submitted by Bodie on Fri, 2010-05-14 12:37Just chasing a little info or even a picture of the ramp at Fortescue?
Planning another monte's trip in July, possibly taking 2 boats over.
1 will leave from dampier as it definately wont be able to launch from a creek, but the other is a 6.2m razorline.
Probably going to try head over through the night as this time of year the winds are generally down making it a good trip over.
Thanks
Bodie

rescued crayfisherman fined over illegal crayfish
Submitted by bod on Fri, 2010-05-14 10:10ABC online
Updated May 14, 2010 09:59:00
A 43 year old man has been fined nearly $30,000 for illegally fishing for rock lobsters in closed waters near Carnarvon.
Patrick Donald Daniels has been charged with taking nearly 200 western rock lobsters from Quobba Point in January 2008.
He had about 100 cray pots in the area.
Daniels appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court earlier this week and was ordered to pay just over $29,000 in fines.
He was also ordered to pay nearly $800 in court costs and was granted a spent conviction.
Daniels was one of three fishermen rescued earlier this week after his cray boat sunk off the Esperance coast.
The men took to a life raft and set off an emergency beacon which sparked a six hour rescue effort with an RAAF C130 Hercules flying to the location.
The three men were eventually winched from the raft by a rescue helicopter and taken to hospital.

GPS Reciever
Submitted by doublej on Fri, 2010-05-14 08:42Just a quick one.
I'm about to install a new GPS in the boat.
Question is where is the best place for the reciever to go.
I have a 7mtr ally hardtop and I heard that if you put the reciever on the roof (Inbetween the ariels) you will get too much interferance.
Not sure if that is correct or not.
Then one of my mates said just put it in the coner under the windscreen on the dash (port side away from all the electronics).
Seems like a good spot but haven't seen too many there.
Any previous experience / advice would be appriciated.
Cheers

Hillarys this Saturday
Submitted by ish_lovesfishing on Thu, 2010-05-13 12:26Hey all,
Heading down to Hillarys boat harbour this weekend, probably Saturday morning around 9ish, never been there before, so will try out different parts of the N and S groyne.
Anyone heading down there on Sat? Any suggestions for good fishing spots over at Hillarys?
Targeting Skippy, Tarwhine, Herring, Gar Fish, Tailor, hopefully some Pinkies and what ever else takes my bait! Taking some prawns, baby mullies, got some herring fillets, might take some squid, soft plastics and lures
anything else? lol
Sort of a newbie at this type of fishing. Any help would be great.
Cheers

Half cabin 5.1m vs 4m tinnie?
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2010-05-13 10:04I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas around this subject. I have a 5.1m Guardian half cabin with a 75hp Suzuki motor on it – I initially bought the boat for around $7k, fitted it out with all the extras, carpets, electronics and new seats etc, to use as a family runabout/fishing boat for dad. The extras cost around $7k, after the trailer refurb and safety gear, epirb etc..Now I sit with a $14k boat... The problem – everyone loved the idea initially and we used it a fair bit – kids on the tube, booze cruise to Pinjarra, fishing in the sound, picnics on GI...then we went fishing out at FFB – Young fella got sea sick and the wife was a bit scared of the swells, and been so far off land...., so they hated it – but since then, no-one is interested anymore..young fella turning in to a young man, wife busy etc.. I work odd hours and can’t rely on mates been available at the drop of a hat to go out for a quick fish.I love going out fishing on the weekends and in the evenings, but cannot launch and retrieve a 5.1m boat on my own, without a lot of hassles....so what now.. ? I see my options as follows:1. Sell the boat and lose a lot of money? Buy a 4m tinnie?2. Swap/trade the boat for a smaller tinnie that I can handle on my own and lose a lot of money?3. Gear up the boat and trailer for a solo launch retrieve – any ideas welcome?4. Any other options?5. Buy a Surrogate to launch the boat for me? I am in Safety Bay, so there are no permanent berthing or storage areas that put you boat in the water for you. Any ideas on what the Guardian is worth if I want to sell it?I have a mate at work that has a 3.9m Stacer tinnie with a 25hp Johnson motor with 25 hours on, that he wants to sell, but has no idea of the value, and is open for offers - what resale value would a boat like this have? What would a 4m tinnie cost new? What is the best size motor for a 4 m tinnie? Just trying to make a decision that I hope I won’t regret.....

On the spot fines for fishing offences.
Submitted by Shorty on Wed, 2010-05-12 18:27I was thinking today what a great idea it would be, just like a speeding ticket, write out what the offence is and calculate the penalty, minimun fine say $150.(all done in 10 minutes)
All money raised goes back into recreation fishing,,anybody caught two or three times with undersize fish gets banned from fishing from 1-5 years and does 200 hours communtiy service with VFO'S.

Swedes find 3.5m 'giant herring
Submitted by looking4mulloway on Wed, 2010-05-12 12:31
A "GIANT herring" measuring 3.5 metres has been discovered off Sweden's western coast - the first such fish found in the Scandinavian country in more than 130 years, a maritime museum said overnight.
The Regalecus glesne, known as the King of Herrings or Giant Oarfish, was found dead in the small fishing village of Bovallstrand on Sweden's west coast, about 90km from the Norwegian border.
"Down at the water, there was something big floating. At first we thought it was a big piece of plastic. But then we saw an eye. I went down to check and saw that it was this extremely strange fish," Kurt Ove Eriksson, the passer-by who found the specimen, told Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.
The rarely seen regalecus, the world's longest bony fish, can reach up to 12 metres.
"The last time we saw a King of Herrings in Sweden was in 1879," the House of the Sea museum in Lysekil, where the fish was taken to, said.
"We don't know much about the species," it said, "but believe it lives in deep waters, at least 1000 metres deep, and many believe it's at the origin of the sea serpent myth", or stories of mythological sea creatures like the Loch Ness Monster.
The dead fish, which was frozen at the museum, had a deep cut through its body and was missing its beautiful, typical back fin, the museum said, adding the fish might be added to an exhibit on sea monsters planned later this year.

Broome shore based
Submitted by lunker on Tue, 2010-05-11 21:40Hi guys,
I'll be up in Broome for 4 days around the start of July, staying at the Oaks resort. I haven't been to Broome for about 7 years, and last time I was up there only managed to fish the jetty with heavy handline a couple of times as I had no car or gear of my own. I'll be flying up and renting a car so moving round isn't such a problem.
Anyway, does anybody have any recommendations or tips about fishing round town? Don't want to travel too far out cos I won't have a deceny fourby or a whole lot of time. I'm probably going to bring up a couple of lighter rods of 6 and 10lb (so the missus can get into it too) and the beach rod for anything else lurking round.
Thanks for ya help!

Having kids affects on your fishing
Submitted by Goodz on Tue, 2010-05-11 19:13I'm curious to hear from some of the wiser (older) members on here as to how having kids affected their fishing lives over the years. Also any younger parents with insights can share their experiences or theories.
With my 2nd due any day now and having a daughter who's nearly 2, I'm wondering how my future fishing will be affected by wether this one is a boy or a girl as it will be our last. Does having all females in your family cause less fishing, or possibly more fishing as you're allowed to do your own thing while all the girls go shopping? Will having a boy mean I get to go fishing more to take him out or maybe change my fishing style as I'll have to always think of him when planning a trip? With my first boat purchase due in 2 years I'm thinking the gender of this 2nd child will decide what type of boat I'll be allowed to buy, more of a fishing boat if it's a boy, more of a cruising boat with room for the girls to lounge if it's a girl....
What will my future hold..............?
