Bad Wrap for Fishos
Submitted by GusG on Fri, 2009-07-31 13:25This article was published in a local newspaper in NSW very close to one of Australia's best known land based game fishing spots.
This article reflects very badly on fishos and I have written a letter to the editor to tell them as much. I have attached the link to the article and copied my letter below for you to read. I recommend you blokes check out the website that I mention there www.albaa.com.au These blokes have put together a really good group of people and they are doing some very good things to give fishos some positive press and a good name. If you can please join their association and perhaps a WA chapetr could be set up to spread the good word and carry out the good actions here.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
Gus

My letter to the editor:
I write to express my concerns on your article titled ‘Deep Sea Dump’ (SCR 29/7/09). As a former local of the area I am very familiar with the location mentioned and the amount of traffic that it receives from anglers, bushwalkers, divers and tourists.
As a very keen angler I was disappointed with the one sidedness of the story. I appreciate that these divers took the time to clean up this area. Most anglers who fish this area are very keen to ensure this location remains as rubbish free as possible. There are a number of fishing websites where users regularly discuss the state of this area and most anglers are very concerned with the state of the ledge. So much so that a number of users have create an organization call ALBAA (Australian Land Based Anglers Association) which is an organization which focuses on education programs for anglers such as environmental care and sustainable fishing and organizes regular clean-up days of popular fishing spots.
On a number of occasions ALBAA have organized clean ups of the area you mention and twice volunteers who enjoy their fishing and diving have planned to dive this area and carry an underwater clean up only to have to cancel it due to safety concerns in very large swell.
I believe your article very unfairly targets all anglers and generalizes up to all be a bunch of cowboys that have no regard for our environment where in actual fact most of us fish not only to catch fish but because we have a genuine love for the locations that our sport takes us to. We are very concerned about the future of our sport, both for the fish stocks and the environment.
One major problem being experienced around Jervis Bay is that the closure of many fishing spots in the area has created a concentration of people fishing a very limited number of spots. This overcrowding has resulted in these spots ending up the way they have. Another problem is the lack of waste disposal facilities in these areas.
I encourage you and your reader to please not tarnish the reputation of all anglers due to the thoughtless acts of a few very small minded individuals. I also encourage you to spend some time looking at http://www.albaa.com.au/ and seeing the very great work being done by this organization.

How are the herring biting at Hillarys?
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Fri, 2009-07-31 11:39I was just wondering how herring and gardies are biting at Hillarys at the moment. I have some totally novice friends who want me to show them how to catch a feed (landbased).
So I thought Hillaries is usually good for having a crack at some herring right? If I were to head to the northern wall (around the disabled platform) lin the hours before sunset tomorrow with float rigs/burley etc... how do you think I would go?

Expressions of interest called for new boat pens at Exmouth
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-07-31 11:20The State Government is calling for expressions of interest for new boat pens proposed for Exmouth.
In Exmouth today, Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said 44 pens for Exmouth Boat Harbour were planned if there was sufficient interest.
Mr O'Brien said the project would rely on boaters pre-paying pen licence fees.
“Growth in the recreational boating sector in recent years has increased demand for mooring facilities throughout the State and there are long waiting lists for pens at Exmouth Boat Harbour,” he said.
In Western Australia, during the past 10 years the number of larger registered vessels measuring more than 7.5m in length has increased from 4,000 in 1998 to 7,200 in 2008 - an increase of 3,200 vessels or more than 40 per cent.
Department of Transport projections show that with sustained high growth in the sector by 2025 the number of these vessels could double.
The Minister said the Exmouth pen projects would be based on the recently completed $3million pen project at Fremantle which, for the first time in WA, saw pens allocated by public ballot and the pre-payment of licence fees to cover construction costs.
“During the next few weeks the Department of Transport will advertise for expressions of interest in the new pens,” he said.
“People will be asked to complete documentation clarifying the size of pen required and pay a deposit.
“Following the expression of interest period, the department will assess the level of commitment from potential penholders and establish the scale of each project.
“Tenders will then be called for the design and construction of the pens based on the information received.”
Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Ken Baston welcomed the initiative and said that infrastructure investment of this kind had incalculable benefits, created jobs and assisted in putting Exmouth on the map as a boating hub.
“Recreational boating is such an important part of life in the Exmouth community. However, as this project is solely reliant on community involvement, I urge all of those interested in obtaining a pen to lodge an expression of interest,” Mr Baston said.
People wanting further information can contact the department on 9216 8839 or visit http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/geraldtonandexmouthpens
Expressions of interest must be received by Friday, September 4.

Arvo fish
Submitted by barneyboy on Thu, 2009-07-30 20:25Got to knock off early today for a change and was on the water at about 1.30pm. I have just bought a new second hand boat and needed to take it for a wrap to see what it can do.
I decided to do a bit of exploring to find a bit of new ground.
It started off a bit slow with a couple of red mullet and I scored a nice size sand whiting about 30cm. This was in about 22 metres of water mind you. I then bagged a nice little squiddly.
Was trying another drift and scored a first. A KGW of 39cm!!! This is okay. Try it again. A 43cm king george. Beauty. Lost a couple of others. Drats..
Gee they pull hard for their size. Havent eaten them yet. On standby in the fridge!!
That was the first fishing sesh from the new/old boat and a first of KGW for me.
Will have to get out again and proove it wasnt a fluke.
Sorry no photos

Late breaking Moonraker news
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-07-30 10:24Many thanks to Matt (Mako Magic)from the Tackle Shack who has managed to perform a miracle by putting my Moonraker back together.
Considering the damage done when it snapped, there is a chance that it may go again, but at least Matt has given it a chance to rise from the ashes (or the green garbo bin where it was headed).
I hope to give Moonraker II a test out over the next few days and will post up some pics.
All the best, Colin Hay

Sailfish picture PLEE!
Submitted by chris_p on Wed, 2009-07-29 22:30
im trying to get into contact with some guys that were up in exmouth a month or so back. i managed a nice sail fish out in my tinny when i was buy myself. i towed it over to them and they took some good pics of my attempting to lift it. they didnt want to use my camera and told me they would email it to me. but of course i havnt seen it. if you took the pic you will know the fish im talking about. i was in a tiny tinny out wide out west side buy myself with a saily. please if anyone has even heard anyone talking about them taking a pic of it on another forum let me know. they were in a new aprox 6m fiberglass cabin boat. They seemed to be keen fishos and where using good gear so they might be on a fishing forum somewhere. i would love to see it would have been a great pic.
any help would be appreciated.

clearer sounding
Submitted by just dhu it on Wed, 2009-07-29 20:33i was having problems with my sounder/transducer at high speeds getting a clear picture, i tried dropping the transducer down to stay in clear water but it didnt work and created rooster tails so i made up the hull extension bracket as the front edge of the transducer was about 80 mm behind the transom , the bracket is flat with bottom of the hull and ensures clean water to the face of the transducer

Cold Cockburn nights
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Wed, 2009-07-29 16:31
I realise this topic is full of closely guarded secrets but I'm hoping people might be willing to pass on a few basic tips. If there's silence I understand why
.
I'm looking at starting to fish Cockburn Sound at night a bit more, from the research I've done there's some pretty exciting fishing to be had if you can handle the cold. Just wondering if anyone can pass me on any tips about this type of fishing. Types of ground to look for, particular features to fish (drop-offs, gutters etc), areas / depths to fish etc.
Happy for PMs if preferred.
Thanks in advance.

Reasons behind skinning ocy bait?
Submitted by Alan James on Wed, 2009-07-29 12:03On many occasions I have heard people say that when using ocy bait you should cut the skin or tentacles off for the best results particularly when targetting dhuies or pinks. The skipper (who I considered to be a gun fisho) on one of the charter boats I used to frequent many years ago would always get the deckie to do the same (to his bait). Since observing that I've never been game enough not to remove the skin / tentacles. Does seem a little odd though. Any thoughts? Recently someone posted that when using seargent baker strips or fillets as bait they should be scaled. Same question?
Cheers

New 20lb rod?
Submitted by till on Tue, 2009-07-28 19:25Ok if you read this thread, you realise I snapped my Daiwa Saltwater 20lb rod. I had it matched to a Daiwa Sol 4000 with YGK Powerhunter on it.
I bought it very recently for SPs, it has had a small 60g jig one it once, but the I also have an Xyoga PE3 for that sort of bizzo although I did notice that working a light jig on that rod in shallow water is really hard.
Anyone bought anything good and new lately that they would recommend?

Handsome hat competition
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2009-07-28 15:52Following the positive response to Brody's fine piece of cranial attire, I have opened the door to all of you proud owners of flash hedd garments to show them off.
All apologies to Brody, but here is his fantastic entry - a lovely tea cosy type number that proved a favourite with the squid off Hillarys recently.

And here is my widely ridiculed tibetan skull cover that was threatened to be thrown on the fire at the Fishwrecked outing at Flatrocks last year.

dead squid
Submitted by gumbyconts on Mon, 2009-07-27 19:01i recently headed to freo in search of squid. i headed to pier 21 and the beach north of the river.
after walking along the beach there were all these black bloated jelly looking things which i later figured to be squid.
im just wondering if this is a common occurance, or if its worth reporting etc.
there were heaps of them interspersed between jellyfish.
Emblem Pro Surf Rods - Anyone seen or used one
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-07-27 13:48They look like Daiwa's follow up to the Moonraker, but I can't find any reviews on them.
Has anyone ever seen one?
Does anyone have an idea on what they are like?
And how much do they cost?
Any input would be gratefully accepted, Colin Hay

Submitted by Bones76 on Mon, 2009-07-27 13:26Gents,
What are your favourite lures for casting to fish up north? Up to the mackerel islands soon and am armed with everything from Tango Dancers, Shimano Ocea's, Maria pop queen's, small Roosta poppers, yo-zuri' hyrdo poppers, Rapalla stick baits (forget name of model) etc etc... To go with soft plastics, metal's and larger poppers for GT's....
Any favourites to take into consideration?

The Moonraker Falls to Earth
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-07-27 12:15I suffered a major tragedy yesterday when my Daiwa Moonraker rod snapped while launching a cast.
It is the best rod I have ever owned and its demise has left me shattered.
I apologise to anyone who was on the beach within hearing range of me for the expletives I uttered when I heard it snap.
