Licences - again
Submitted by chevin on Mon, 2009-07-13 10:00As may be expected there are numbers of us keen on opposing the
proposed licence fees and although petitions may be entered there is no
obligation for anyone to even look at them. However, there is a letter
that most MPs would probably rather not have us know about. I have
adapted the standard form to embrace our concerns. I know there is one
line to which many will object as, indeed, I do. However, I am prepared
to swallow that bit of pride in order to defend our sport as I hope
others will. If you submit this letter, Mr Moore is obliged to read
it and send a reply to all of those who send it to him. If you do not
get a response there are processes that can be followed to rectify the
matter. Please copy the letter, complete it and send to Mr Moore at
Parliament House, Harvest Terrace, Perth 6000.

sounder bottom coverage
Submitted by grayzeee on Fri, 2009-07-10 16:12Hi all
i'm new to this site so this is a big hello and a bit of a question regarding sounders.
i've just got hold of my new boat (6m HH) and it's been set up with a furuno 585 with an airmar transducer. i did have a lowrance unit on my previous boat and was very pleased with its performance.
i fish out of hillarys a lot , and can usually be found off the back of 3 mile.
With the old lowrance unit , in 15 meters of water , it was great to see fish showing on the sounder and watch your bait drop down to them as they came up too meet it.
with the new furuno gear though , i couldn't see my baits drop down in the same depths.
this irked me a bit as the transducer is a lot more powerful.
i went to the airmar website and checked the details. it seems that running my unit in 200Hz . thebottom coverage at 10 meters is 2foot by 3 foot in old money.
not much at all really.
200Hz is supposed to be for shallow water but you could drive by a decent lump right next to your boat and never know it was there.
have taken to using 50Hz in shallow water down to around 30 meters , then can change back to 200 till i get to 120 odd meters , and its back to 50Hz and i'm pinging ground the size of half a footy field.
is anybody else experiencing this and using 50Hz in the shallows?
are you loosing much definition?
cheers for any replies
graham

Fishing Rule Clarification - 3 hooks
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-07-10 15:05I was sure I knew this. But somebody just cast doubts into my mind!!!!
3 hooks doesnt actually mean 3 hooks in my mind, it means 3 attachments that can catch fish.
I could have a taikabura jig (2 hooks) and 2 droppers with say a gang of 3 and then a snelled pair and still be legal. I know I am but this chap just disagree.
Cheers all

Petition handed over to Opposition.
Submitted by Jabba Jabba on Fri, 2009-07-10 13:38The petiton as it stands at the moment has been handed over to Mr John Robert Quigley MLA, Member for Mindarie, Australian Labor Party during a meeting with him today.
The duplicate signatures were removed, so at the time of printing out there were 483 signatures.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to voice their opinion.
The petiton is still active and will be given to the Norman Moore, so hopefully we can get more responces over the next week.

Leader to terminal knot -- your favourite and why. Teach the novices a bit
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-07-10 13:28I started off fishing as a 5yo. Probably started tying my first hook about 7-8 (now at the age ALzheimers set in ) and it was probably a couple of grannies or something stupid.
Progressed for a very long time to the locked blood knot but have now settled into the Uni knot for most situations. Easy to tie and can be done "blind" in the night (or with my failing vision LOL).
Obviously I use others but the question is your favourite, most used.
Even I would be interested but novices should love this sort of thing.
Cheers

Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Thu, 2009-07-09 20:17I'm looking for opportunities as well as looking at the weather. Fishing in my usual patch where I can take my FWD and my beloved dog without fear of fine or mobs.
How do you guys feel about this weather and do you think this weekend will be worth an effort for serious fishing? I will prolly disregard everything you say and go but it's interesting to see what you think.

Fisheries check how often have you been checked ???
Submitted by Kal on Thu, 2009-07-09 11:46On my last 4 outings i have been checked while 20km offshore. They come over and ask how the fishings going see catch ,ask for skippers ticket , view flare ,epirb take it out the box ,and life jackets. Is anyone else getting checked or am i the only one. The last time i egnorded them till i had my lines baited and in the water ,they didnt like that , but as soon as i turned around i had my skippers ticket out ,and went through all the safety gear without them having to say a word ,then i said to them this is the fourth time in 6 weeks that they have checked me.They should have it on record that my safety gear is on board, then they can just come over and check catch and go let us get on with drinking ,whoops i mean fishing.
Good to see the're out there doing the're job but why follow me around.
This way north of rotto each time.

Fishing Bag
Submitted by 7739ian on Thu, 2009-07-09 10:10Can anyone point in the direction of a larger zip up type tackle bag with removeable trays? At the moment i have a small old 3 cantilever draw Plano Box and a larger multi pocket zip up bag off Ebay - not enough room in the Plano and the bag is too bulky - basically i'm tired of shuffling bits back and forth depending on where i am fishing. Any hints would be appreciated.

Fishing Bah Humbug
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2009-07-08 08:48With the wind forecaster suggesting that the conditions would be pretty good last evening I decided to head down to one of my favourite north of the river lanbased spots in the hope of landing a few nice tailor.
I was about half way through my drive to the spot when it started to rain. Only having a water proof jacket in my car I was hoping that a tackle store that I would be passing on the way would still be open.
With great relief I saw the lights were still on at the shop and was pretty stoked when I found that they actually had some water proof pants in my size and wrapped when the very guy selling me the pants told me they had been catching a few nice pinkies at my fishing destination.
With new pants in tow, I was soon back ont the road with the rain continuing to fall. 15 minutes later I was pulling my two rods, tackle back pack, gaff, bag of bait and burley out of the boot of my car and donning my nerw pants and my water proof jacket.
As I began wandering out to the rock wall the first thing I noticed was that the wind definately wasn’t as calm as was forecast - in fact it was absolutely howling.
The next thing I noticed was a few fellow anglers depating the area in rapid haste.
Extremely grateful that I had my new water proof pants - but wishing I had also brought some water proof footware - I arrived at the fishing spot to find I was the only one there - a big change for this normally busy fishing location.
With the wind still howling, I loaded up my biggest outfit (a 13 foot Red Back rod and 8000 Sustain) with a big lump of lead and threw a ganged mulie out as far as I could get it into the teeth of the wind.
With the wind blowing straight the rain straight into my face and a fair swell smashing over the rocks - it wasn’t the best of coinditions - but hey I was fishing and previous experience had shown me that fishing in weather like this often leads to good fish.
Half an hour later the rain stopped and then the wind dropped and I began to think this is pretty good - apart from my cold wet feet.
With the improvement in conditions I decided to rig up my second outfit (a 13’ 6” Moonraker and 3000 Daiwa Heartland) and toss out another mulie - this time with a much smaller piec of lead attached.
But nothing was happening. Not one good run - not even a single nibble.
I began burleying up like a mad man and switched one of my baits to a fresh fillet of yellow tail.
Nothing.
I managed to stick it out for nearly four hours without getting a single touch before deciding it was time to take my wet cold feet back home to make friends with some nice warm, dry socks.
Despite the lack of action, it was still great to get out and toss some baits into the water.
I know I willl be back there again very soon.
