Setting up to drift (advise)

Having just started to get back into the fishing scene,i see ground come up on the sounder and attempt to drift over it but unsure if i am hitting the right spot or not. I am checking on the gps tracking trying to follow that but sometimes not sure if drifting to where the fish are.

I have a drift anchor that i use but do not use a drift bouy( should I) and what is the best set up for these.

Cheers

Preserving Bait

G'day Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has bothered with preserving baits (salting and drying), mulies in particular.

I have never done it, but was thinking it might be an idea for easily storing bait while camping out up the North-West.

We hit the road in 3 weeks so was thinking I should get cracking with it.

I was thinking of salting, drying and then vacuum packing them with the trusty sunbeam.

If anyone has any thoughts or hints it would be greatly appreciated.

Am I correct in assuming that once preserved you can dry store them (not fridge or freeze)??

Cheers,

Scott

estuary cod

here is a photo of an estuary cod pulled up on a wetlinerr off the montes. the fish was dead upon capture and the wetliner are allowed to take cod over the maxiumum size limit as long as there not protected species. i weighed around 90kg in this photo and the cod was too heavy to lift off  the ground

Cockburn Sound Snapper Etiquette

Well i have just read the March edition of Fishing Western Australia, theres an artilce by a chap on fishing Cockburn Sound, he described how the Pro was looking at his echo sounder and indicated to his mate to drop a line in and he hooked up a snapper then other Rec boats started casting into the very same spot straight away and hooked up als

It seemed nobody minded either and was normal behaviour ?

I hope nobody casts into my spot or is the Pro fair game to the recs ? or maybe he does not mind ?

Hard time deciding setups!! someone with exp needed!!

heys guys, im posting from sydney and looks like you lot know what your doing! maybe someone can shed some light? its doing my head in...

Im planning to head offshore quite a lot this coming season chasing yellowfin tuna and maybe get some late marlin if possible!.

Just wondering what you guys take out with you with another 4 blokes on the boat... cant bring the whole tackleshop..

Ive got a 5000FA stella on a 4-6kg magnum butt incase some smallish yft or albies show up in the distance ........

8000FA on a trevalla butterfly jig rod to bottom bash with and jig some yellowfin.

20000FA on a smith jig stick to troll and cube up with.....

Seem about right? anything to change? Should i be chucking a small skirt on the 8000FA and maybe a big skirt / hardbody on the 20000fa? im pretty new to tuna , mainly just jig for kings or downrig in the harbour for rats

Amberjack

Just got a PM from a new member from Egypt wanting some information about Amberjacks. Especially a DVD on how to catch them and where. I suppose the Wreckers should also inform him about Sambos instead off Amberjack, but because I am at Dampier I am not in the slightest a good source of information for our new friend Massanet.

I hope you all can help.

The ones that got away..

Their was an article about this in a Western Angler mag last year sometime and i found it to be a very interesting read. I thought it might be fun to involve members of FW in telling their stories of "the ones that got away..". I can remember countless times trying to lift a big Mackerel or Tuna into the boat, due to not having a gaff only for the leader to snap or for the hooks to pull. I really hope this one gets off the ground and members will happily share their stories.

So cmon, lets hear it.

Kununurra March 5th

A few photos from a fishing trip to Ivanhoe Crossing on the Ord and the Dunham River just upstream of the confluence with the Ord. No decent fish - we caught 18 Barra but nothing worth a photo. This was a reward for a team of guys we have working up there at the moment. The crossing was well awash and closed. Absolutely crawling with juveniles who struck at just about anything. The cost in lures was enormous when you combine the speed of the water and the snags - but a great day out. Nothing i said could say would stop the guys from standing right on the waters edge for half an hour at a time - no casualties but i had visions of trying to explain a croc attack as a lost time injury. An interesting story from the guy at the Bush Shack while buying lures - a 2 metre Bull shark caught at the base of the diversion dam a week before. Not a recommended swimming spot.

Salmon Season 2009

Adam possible to sticky this?
Thought its time to start a 2009 salmon thread with all the whats what, and where the fish are at!!!
Also somewhere to post your pictures of some good salmon catches.
Depending on Adams thoughts (Ive not asked him yet :) ), but might be possible to start a little comp, with the Best picture / capture of the season, and hoping Adam might be kind enough to throw in a fishwrecked shirt or 2 :) ... see how we go with that one!!
so where are the fish at?? anyone caught any? Ive heard some big schools going round Augusta on the weekend, anyone else got any info, or even better got into some fish yet??
Look forward to everyones responses, and happy salmon hunting!!!!
Cheers
Bodie

What's you favourite beach rod?

I was reading some heated debates about the pros and cons of G Loomis surf rods over Lamiglas rods in a US fishing forum today (Boy I am slack) and it peaked my interest.

My personal favourite beach rod is my Daiwa Moonraker. It is a great rod with a whippy action that can help you cast a mile. However, it does have its shortcomings with regard to casting heavier baits.

I know there are a few keen landbased fishos on here and I was wondering what rods are, and have been, your favourites?

All the best, Colin Hay

Today

Did anyone get out today??
Was down at Austal shipbuilding yards at henderson and the sound looked flat as a tack and by the looks of seabreeze it seemed alright on there.

So did anyone catch anything??? or were you all good boys and didnt chuck sickies lol

Herring - Where are the big ones

Hey guys I m taking the kids for a fish this weekend anyone know where the big bull herring are being caught

Whats so good about Bream?

Hey guys,

Heres one that might get some people talking, maybe even get some die hard followers heckles up, well see....

Bream, having never really spent time river fishing and always focusing on the oceans i have never ever caught one, I have only ever attempted to catch them on one attempt when camping at moore river where we trauled and cast lures all day without a hint of success.

I have seen the shows so many times it has gotten very boring to me watching them, they cast near branches in the water so we did too, we cast near reeds, we cast far from the boat, near the boat, trauled the edges, the middle, upways, downways, zig zagged, basically tried everything except the use of dynamite to get one.

Ive had this discussion with friends over beers and no one I hang out with understands it so my question is what is basically so great about bream? They are regularely on tv fishing shows, they have bream tournaments now that have recently and continue to gather quite a following.

Do they taste spectacular? Are they a great fighting fish? Is it that they are so painfully hard to get to bite so any catch gives a great feeling of accomplishment? To me they are quite a small species so must surely only put up a great fight on very light gear....

To me it seems the following has definately grown due to alot of advertising on tv shows and the like but maybe there is good reason for this? Maybe they really are the holy grail of fishing as the likes of Rex hunt, Starlo and Bushy so claim.

Having never caught one maybe if I was to one day hook up on one i might also realise the magnitude of this highly worshiped fish.

Thanks guys, I am looking forward to being enlightened on the species Bream
