I'm gonna bit the bullet and get some kinda suspension for the passenger seat for my old boy. I've had a look at the suspension bases but at $1‐2k that's completely out of range for something I don't sit on 

The other option is swapping out the pedestal for a gas one.

Can anyone offer any other options and provide feedback on the gas pedestals?

Following last week’s shock announcement about the Government’s proposed nine-month west coast demersal scalefish ban, Recfishwest has written to Minister Punch. We have asked him to explain how the package of 17 recommendations we put forward in July did not meet the Government’s catch reduction targets.

Our recommendations were developed after months of hard work, working through the responses from the biggest recreational fishing survey in WA history and with months of considered input from our West Coast Demersal Expert Working Group.

Recfishwest has also asked the Minister to restore the public comment period back to six weeks as originally agreed, rather than the four that the Government has now made it.

Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland said, “The Government’s current proposals largely ignored key recommendations put forward by Recfishwest – including a dhufish spawning closure during the peak spawning time. Instead, the Government is asking fishers to choose between two totally unacceptable options that will cause a huge amount of social pain and economic hardship.

“We worked in good faith over the last few months, yet after all the input from the community and the constructive solutions put forward, we learnt through the media that our package was deemed by the Minister to be insufficient to achieve the desired catch reductions. We have not been informed how each element of our package was assessed and exactly where the package was deemed to have fallen short of meeting the challenge set by the Minister.”

Recfishwest has already been contacted by hundreds of fishers concerned about the impact a nine-month closure will have on their way of life, as well as regional caravan park owners, charter operators and tackle shop owners who hold grave concerns about the future of their businesses if these proposals are implemented.

There is a better way

Andrew said, “Without question there is a better way to speed up the rebuilding of these fish stocks – which are not in ‘decline’ as has been suggested in the media. The fishery is clearly sustainable with DPIRD’s latest State of the Fisheries report classifying this fishery as ‘recovering at an acceptable rate’.

“Only giving fishers the choice between an eight or a nine-month ban is simply unacceptable, especially while we know our package will achieve the required outcomes with much less economic and social carnage. We have asked the Government to explain how our recommendations were assessed and where they fall short.”

Recs able to keep 6 dhuies per boat with no size limit

Charters able to fish spawning aggregations of dhuies with a 12 passenger operation able to retain 24 dhuies.

Spearos able to retain two blue groper each. Good for finishing off spawning pairs I guess.

There were so many ways to better address this situation. If you wanted to maximise pain while minimising gain then this is a good plan. Otherwise it is complete shit. Possibly the worst fisheries management decision I’ve ever seen. And that’s saying something.

Im actually affected deeply by how profoundly stupid and inept it is. The fact our taxpayer dollars fund this sort of creation makes it even worse.

How could rfw be outplayed and misled on this so badly? What is the point of a fisheries dept and ministers office that is capable of this ineptitude? And if we as a recreational fishing community continue to be reactive and blame shift and remain uninvolved rather than try and be proactive with rec industry driven initiatives before the poo hits the fan.... well what did we expect would happen?

i remember a heated discussion with a member on here recently re them catching 18 dhuies in a day because they “couldn’t get away from ‘em”. This extensive ban, sadly, is a little bit of reaping what you sow.

Seems like they've got a pretty good deal going! No rego for boats, no license fees, no ramp fees, no insurance and I've certainly missed more fees us blokes have to pay

We might get to fish in The west coast fishing region for 3 months a year while they can take as much fish from WA waters they would like. 

Wondering if it's worth a mention in the emails to the ministers especially the grange swindling state daddy that everyone loved a few months ago. Remember he was telling us follow the science back then? He has been saying that a bit lately hasn't he? 

 I have worked for decades using data analysis and it concerns me that the recent plan to ban fishing is taken from a report by the body that always intended to change the rules in a significant way.

You can make figures give you any result you want and its not that I don't trust this government I just don't trust any of them.

We need to demand an independent analysis of the information gathered and how it was used to determine the value of it before accepting the result.

 After living in Carnarvon where it never rains and moving to Innisfail where it always rains my boat let me in a little issue she has.

A constantly wet bilge.

I had no idea how the water was getting in and it was starting to hurt my head.

The bilge pumps do a great job of getting the water out yet there's always that little ( a lot...:) of water that the pumps won't suck up. Some research online and I decided to go down the arid bilge road and make a couple of set ups for the big duck, being a cat there's two of everything. I jumped online and ordered the pumps and timers and a trip to Cairns to the worlds best retic store saw all of the piping requirements met. The local electrical store provided the boxes and cover plates and I was in business. 
 

Whilst I was waiting for the gear to show up a mate of mine came over from Busso to hang out for a couple of weeks and we ended up down at the boat trying to work out how the water was getting in. Bilges were wet vacced dry and water was sprayed in all manners and styles with the water still getting and no obvious path shown. New deck hatch seals were installed and still the water got in. The bilges have a 70mm stringer running down the guts of em and I put a pump on one side to get rid of the water. One morning it clicked.... the water was only getting into the side that the pump was on. Switch sides and bust out the hose, hey presto the water is now on the other side. Turns out the water was running down the gunnels over the back of the transom and straight down the bilge outlet hole into the bilge. Fuck me....... The bilge outlets are high on the transom not giving enough height to have a loop in the pipe to stop this from happening, quick solution was to sikaflex a bilge blower clamshell over the outlet and no more water problems. 
 

Having collected all the gear to make a dry bilge system I went ahead and installed it anyhow. Pretty simple setup. A small diaphragm pump on a 12v timer with a pickup point on each side of the stringer, the pickup points are light switch faceplates with a barbed plastic thread running through em with a sponge on the bottom. Water gets sucked up by the sponge and sent over the side.

 Hi guys just booked my 2 stroke yammy in for a service at a local boat yard it's a 2002 model and straight away was told that they don't normally work on motors that old so I asked if his staff were capable of working on those motors he said yes then really tried to put me off with time frame and cost which with the way things are at the moment seemed normal to me. Motor has only 270 hrs on it just stalls every now and then at idle not regularly.  I'm a little worried that his staff are only capable of dropping and replacing oil not the rest of the process.

 Hi fellow fish'os, am looking to head out from Bunbury this Thursday for our maiden voyage as we are new to area and as I have no marks any advice on were to head to catch a demersal would be really appreciated...my boat has a 115hp with 140 ltr tank..cheers

 This is a public service annoucement.

If you get to the jetty with your fishing rod, squid jigs, head torch, and bucket, and your head torch gives 2 flashes and refuses to turn on, it is NOT out of batteries.

It is in travel mode.

As I learnt 2 hours later, when trying to charge an already charged head torch back at my desk.

If you find yourself with a torch that flashes twice and turns off...  HOLD THE BUTTON FOR TEN SECONDS.  it will flash again, you let go the button, and all is good again with the world.

Lesson learnt.

 After a succesful Exy trip, we have got some frozen YFT fillets. Had heaps of fresh sashimi but wondering how good it is from frozen. It was looked after and cryvaced then frozen. Only a couple of weeks old.

 Does anybody know if Vexed products use stainless steel hooks? 

Just curious as I've always thought stainless wasn't the best option

for general fishing. Cheers
