Tailor fishing
Submitted by Fish guts on Mon, 2012-07-23 19:04G'day folks.
I want to take my young bloke out to grab a few tailor of the beach. Unfortunately I live in down town High Wycombe but with the freeway systems in place now days it doesn't take all that long o get to a decent beach. My question is where is a good spot to take him to rip into a few? I understand no one is going to reveal their prime time locations but any response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sambo Jigging this to heavy?
Submitted by BigSpinna on Mon, 2012-07-23 05:08Hey guys,
Looking at going out with saltwater charters in October at least twice to try get onto some big sambo's.. My current jig stick is a Wilson LiveFibre Venom 5'6 80lb - Paired with Stella 20k running 60lb braid.
Is this overkill for Sambo jigging or will there be some monsters big enough to give it a workout?
Thanks

Fish Frames research results
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2012-07-22 16:10Anyone else recieve some feedback from your fish frame donations? Just got a letter in the mail from fisheries with some info on a few fish that I donated the frames of, thought it may be of interest to you all to see the age to size of a couple fish.
Dhufish - 1021mm Female - 24 years old - Estimated 16.5kg *
Dhufish - 691mm Female - 9 years old - Estimated 5.4kg
Snapper - 709mm No data - 6 years old - Estimated 4.1kg
Anyone else have some more of their own details on fish frames they donated?
* This was my "20kg" Dhuie (on my scales) and just for the record we did try to release it but after such a long fight on light gear she was unable to be succesfully revived.

Xzoga
Submitted by turts on Sun, 2012-07-22 14:46Hi guys as some of you may be aware I'm looking for a pe5/50lb rod to match a seagate 4500e
Had the xzoga taka-si 6615 suggested to me
Specs look pretty good for what I want which was mainly bottom bashin plus throwing poppers for kings little bit of an all rounder almost
Ideally wanted something around 6'2 but this length is not a bad suggestion
Never seen any xzoga rods especially in SA
Is anyone familiar with them especially this model and whether it would suit my needs
Also possibly price range if able!
Cheers

GPS malfunction
Submitted by Tandawg on Sun, 2012-07-22 13:38Hello all,
While fishing this morning, I noticed the GPS was dropping its sattelites very often, something which never happens.
Finally a message pops up on the screen saying "GPS MODULE NOT RESPONDING".
It is a Lowrance unit with an external antenna.
Its certainly got me confused.

saturday nights efforts including a supprize catch!! (photo added)
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2012-07-21 23:08with the weather looking good troy, my mate whitey and myself decided to head out for a night fish.
got in the water about noon and headed out to the north side of rotto in the 40's looking for some dhu's before it got dark, well, after many spots tried with nothing coming over the side at all and nearing dark we decided to head in to a spot in 20mtrs and drop the pick down and start the burly going.
after 20 mins the first fish pulled over the side was a 63cm dhu, followed by another 2 after that,
a bit smaller than my keeping rule at 60cm, but well over 50cm, so they were returned.
from then on the dhu's went quiet and everything else started, pinky's galore with some keepers and alot of under size thrown back, 2 nice KG's, 2 bronzey's, 1 leapord shark (i think), skippys by the truckload, 3 port jacksons, dirty stinken eel, plus numerous other shit fish and a couple of decent squid.
only a few fish kept for the table and every thing else returned.
there were plenty of squid but they were very fussy and wouldnt chase the jig, so only managed the 2.
then troy being the jag ass prick he is, pull's this crayfish in on the bottom hook, bloody good size as well, spewin we couldnt keep it.
heres a pick of the cray(sorry about the pick it's of the phone) and ill put up some pics of the fish 2morow sometime.
a good night with lots of fish caught by all!! with a few jimmys washing it all down.
cheers ron

this is what was kept for the night

Perth Charter Recomendations
Submitted by LB Fisher on Sat, 2012-07-21 20:20Hi all,
Im after everyone's recomendations on charter operators running out of Perth (Hillary's to Freo). I'm after offshore day trips chasing anything from billfish, spaniards, samson, pelagics through to bottom fishing for Dhu, snapper etc.
I have a heap of mates rolling into town early October - if it were you, what species would you chase and with which charter operator?
Looking forward to hearing of your experiences & recommendations

Stradic FJ got in the water - now making noise
Submitted by Jelle on Sat, 2012-07-21 19:05Hey guys,
my stradic FJ 5000 ended up in the water a couple of days ago. It wasn' in there for more than 8-10sec. I gave it a rinse with fresh water, cleaned it up, put some of the grease in the maintenance port and it appeared fine. Didn't use it for a day or two and now I picked it up it's not smooth any more. It's not really a grinding sound, more of a constant soft noise when I turn the handle.
Do I need to send it for service, or can I take it apart myself? It's pretty new, only bought it couple of months ago..
Cheers!

Daiwa warranty issue!
Submitted by joffa on Thu, 2012-07-19 21:29Adam, please delete if this is unfairly slanderous in any way, but jmho and need's to be allerted to anyone thinking of daiwa purchases from Australia on the the basis of after sales care, as a consideration.
while working in the trade this was a Major selling point, one im sorry for making.Times have changed!!!
Guys who own ANY Daiwa reel's beware.....please read the following ridiculous response from a service tech at Daiwa, very very disgruntled with this response.....imagine we all had this approach to problem solving, and remember this product was purchased from Daiwa AUSTRALIA - not off the net from OS at a far cheaper price because of "a better warranty this way" - warranty what?
I have removed the respondants name as this doesn't need to be like that.but, apparently a sheared bearing is normal expected wear.
And I have underlined the parts of the reply email that make hulk angry.
Bear in mind it's a twenty buck bearing, for a very expensive reel, so i have lost faith in the after sales service of this product.
read the bottom email first ...then this reply, then go buy Shimano.I have also forwarded our "dealings" to the state ombudsman.
I hate being treated like the little guy when I support a brand and do the right thing.
Hi Joff,
There are a few things that could have caused that problem, however with a reel that is 2 years old and has been ‘Flogged’ this would come under normal expected wear. Also bearings are never covered under the manufactures warranty unless it is a brand new reel out of the box, never been used and has a bearing problem.
So would you like to purchase the rubber seal and one handle bearing??
Kind Regards

Subject: An Enquiry From The Website - Saltiga LD35 repair.
Hey Guys,
Just noticed an annoying clicking in the handle of my Saltiga LD35 and
thought to check it for parts required.....first time ive seen this so
thought to pass it on FYI.
As you can see in the attached pic, the handle bearing was the culprit
and I'm guessing it went while fighting a good bottom ooglie!!!
Funny thing was that the bearing had actually sheared in half!!!!
Interestingly the internal parts of the bearing showed signs of
fatigue caused by rust, admittedly I'm in no way gentle with this reel
- it gets flogged in fact, lots of xo bottom grubbers and sambo's etc.
so it cops it but I've never seen a handle bearing shear, even in the
T/bar handles of old that seemed to (if an angler put too much crank
on the handle) shear the handle stem.
I used to work on the Jigging boats on the west coast and have seen
most things broken over the years so all good there.
I decided to just pull this same bearing off a Saltiga Z-6000GT that
only gets used for stick-baiting and noticed a rubber seal between the
start of the handle and the inside handle bearing, that prevents water
getting to the bearing from the inside wall of the handle - without
waffling too much,
could this be the reason the bearing failed in the LD35?
Yes i know they are CRBB's??
Or is it just not up to the brawlers we get off the bottom, on this
side of the country or the over large "manhands" cranking too hard on
the handle. lol.
I fitted that rubber seal to the reel to stop future water intrusion
and require both parts for this repair.
This reel is still under warranty as was only purchased in 2010.
My address is :
XXXX
Kind regards
Joff Weston

Navionics Gold Card
Submitted by Darryl on Thu, 2012-07-19 14:28Hi All,
Need some help on my Lowrance ElITE -5.
Just purchase Navionics Gold Card.
Imagery of the Navionics navigational charts (safety depths, depth contours, spot soundings, text, etc.). Is this only available when on water via satellite . When I installed the card the GPS shows my position. I know its a stupid question but when on water will I pick up the cards.I have not been on the water since I purchase the card.
