Saturday, Out Wide
Submitted by hillinb on Mon, 2011-12-12 20:09
Saturday is looking very good.
What is everyone up to?
I'm heading out wide, picking up mates at rotto then going for a straight hook freedive at a FAD, then trolling to dhuey spot maybe via a quick jig at the containers.
Any tips or techniques for the troll, I was going to drag a homemade flasher and run a 6m red head diver, a bellyflap rigged skirt, and some smaller skirts on the lighter gear.

Rottnest
Submitted by Pezdog on Mon, 2011-12-12 12:59Hi all
Heading to Rotto for a few days this week and hoping to wet a line and get stuck into some fish. Whiting, Tailor etc.
Has anyone had luck recently? Staying around Longreach and don't want to be walking or riding too far so if anyone knows any good spots to have a go at that would be a huge help as I struggled from Fays Bay and Ricey Beach last year. Otherwise just general areas east/west etc
Cheers

Garden Island
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Sun, 2011-12-11 13:27Went to garden island today at 7am, conditions were less than perfect but we knew that
headed out to the back of garden and puled a nice coral trout? fought really hard for its size. after a pic it was released
Swell was huge so we headed to the front and got spooled by something rather large on the bottom so probably a ray
got some bait for next time
I think i Saw Quindiesel Brad in his 670 Quinny and Boutime at the woodies ramp too.
How did everyone else go
Cheers

Cray Pots
Submitted by jayce on Sun, 2011-12-11 12:27Gday guys
We are heading to cervantees over the christmas new years period and are wanting to set a few pots for some crays.
Just chasing a bit of advice on what would be good depths at that time of year to get a few.
We will only have a 12ft tinnie so wont be going out to far. And i am not asking for peoples spots here just a rough depth that we should start looking. We are only new to catching crays.

Eating Stingray
Submitted by Fathom on Sun, 2011-12-11 01:05I've had a gutful of eating Tailor lately and after losing 4 sets of gangs tonight, (it's going off around here on the beaches at sunset) my last cast produced a nice Eagle ray. I took it home and de-winged it, lightly floured and deep fried....not bloody bad, tastes a bit like Squid and/or Abalone with the same texture, I was suprised. Now I got about 4kg left to experiment with on some better recipes........first ray I've actually eaten out of the tons I've caught, might even eat another one some time

Might throw a lure out the back whole we go. if the sea breeze is in earlier than we are ready to finish I think we'll come back into the sound and give southern flats a go.

Pflueger Trion or Wilson LCS
Submitted by Graeme76 on Fri, 2011-12-09 16:56Looking at upgrading my young blokes bream rod & reel for christmas. I've got an Okuma Hardstone HS-30 already that I'm going to give him & am looking for a decent rod to put it on that will cost $100 or less. I've narrowed it down to two rods, the 2pce 6'6" Pflueger Trion 2-4kg (PFLT-SP662L) or a 2pce 7' Wilson LCS 2-8lb (both $99 each). I've read good things about the Pflueger but can't find any reviews on the Wilson, though it does look & feel pretty good in the store. Does anyone have (or had) either of these rods that can give me thier personal opinion about them? I'm open to other rod suggestions to but it must be 2pce & top dollar is $100. Christmas for 4 kids is a budget killer.
If anyone wants to give me thier thoughts on the Hardstone HS-30 as well would be great. I've only bait fished with it once & didn't catch anything significant enough to test it properly. Would it handle Fireline ok or best to stick to mono?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Interesting capture off Karratha
Submitted by jay_burgess on Fri, 2011-12-09 16:42Got a text from a mate a couple of nights ago to say that his younger brothers mate had captured an 86cm Red Bass from back beach in Karratha. I must admit, I was extremely sceptical about the claim and thought maybe they'd confused it with a monster mangrove jack but low and behold, I got sent a couple of photos which supported the story. A rare capture up here I would say, and especially landbased on 10lb line. Besides Exmouth and Ningaloo the only places I've seen them regularly encountered around here are the Monte Bello Islands and way offshore at Glomar Shoals. The whole time I've GT fished and dived Karratha/Dampier I've never come across one.

Colour Sounder buying advice
Submitted by timboon on Fri, 2011-12-09 14:28FW Crew,
Thinking of updating my Lowrance sounder, had her for five years or so and been good but think i might go with the flow and grab me a new cheapish colour job.
I like the lowrance that I had but a mate has just bought a GME for under a grand and was wondering if anyone can tell me if they have bought any other breeds that would be comparable. I know its usually a case of you get what you pay for but I sure you guys have experience with models you could perhaps recommend.

HDS Gen 2
Submitted by Dizzy on Fri, 2011-12-09 10:57With all the Furuno vs HDS discussion / banter that regularly raises it's head, it might pay to throw the new option into the mix ?
Looks like the sounder gap may have been bridged a bit, no ?
