Eating the unusual

One of me ol' mates Max Cramer (RIP) , told me after a dive that we humans have a weird sense of what is  an edible seafood species and what is regarded as inedible. He has showed me some weird stuff found whilst  diving and offered it to me as a  snack and more often then not (being raw) it was quite good, sometimes excellent.

Now I know a few secrets, and not willing to spill the beans on his secrets, and fisheries wanting in on the act.

I will however recommend the humble King Wrasse (yep Dhuie bait) if cooked right  is 1.3X better then Baldy and possibly the best eating fish in WA...yep big call

I reckon crumbed Eagle Ray is better then Dhufish, maybe I have strange taste buds....going to do a side by side soon and see what wins, bet the ray does

open season delights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi guys, open season is here!!!!! i went out of mindarie this morning on the good ship "barred up" (a well known 560 barcrusher cc) we headed out at 5.15 this morning and we could have  bagged out on dhu by 7am!! we started at a favorite ledge in 32m with an 8kg  male which went straight into the icebox 5 minutes later we landed another male around 7kg which we released with confidence we would find a big one before the morning was out, then we moved to our most reliable kg spot which was on the way to the next dhu lump and quickly added 5 kg's to 65cm to the box, what then followed was awesome the next 3 spots (of 1 drop each) produced 3 more dhu's betwwen 8-10kg all of which released strongly (we were still confident of a "big" dhu for open day) the next drop added 2 of the biggest breaksea i have ever seen including my new pb of over 2kg! and a nice 550mm baldie , the icebox was looking awesome by this stage!! the next 2 small lumps produced 3 more dhu between 5-8kg in 2 drops including a triple header of 2 dhu and a pink for the three of us, and the last spot for the day produced the 'big one" for the day for my mate Craig (easily his new pb at 15ish kg) which gave him a solid tussle on my stella 8k and tcurve 200 combo.(photo attatched)after an awesome morning we put a spreadf of lures out and headed for home around 12ish we hooked 2 nice blues on the troll and they both came unstuck near the boat, so we headed in . all in all an awesome start to the season!!!!!. cheers    by the way big props to the skipper Joffa who did an awesome job again!!!!!

By catch on todays dive with Joe M

Dived with Joe this morning and wet a line at the same time and hoked up with these tow. Was happy with mine at 52cm, but Joe's baldie was a real bad boy!

Fishing with Braid

Hey everyone

I just went out and brought a penn combo which consists of a penn 560 slammer (reel) and a 7ft rod. I choose for them to put braid on and they insisted that a theram something fireline was a way to go. Ive got it on with 20lb braid.

As this is the first time ive used braid i am completly unsure on what to do?

For just some bait fishing off the rocks  Do you tie the braid directlty to a mono leader?? or do you use a swivel??

And using a lure do you tie directly to the braid or do you use a leader??

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

FISHERIES IN WA COMPARED TO OTHER STATES

Why is it that the fishing license here in WA require you to have a separate license for each type of fish you wish to catch. In my opinion your fishing license should cover everything ie rock lobster, fishing from a boat, fresh water ect.

In Victoria and NSW (unsure about the other states but I think it would be the same) your fishing license covers you or everything. Freshwater, Abalone, Rock Lobster, Fishing from a boat ect. AND IT COST JUST $25 FOR THE WHOLE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe we are getting taken advantage of over here and need to make a stance, where does all of this money go?, WA is not as jammed packed full of people as the east coast so my thinking would be that the cost of not needing people (fisheries employees) the whole way up the entire cost would be a massive saving per year due to only needing a few of them, and then on top of that especially when some people would have purchased 2 or more different licenses to catch different types of fish I presume there would be a good stash of cash somewhere.

Lures for Whiting

Laterly Ive seen Whiting being caught on Hard body lures and popper, but i dont know what type of lures and poppers and how to work them, anyone got any tips?
thanks

Your best fishing moment in 2011?

We've had some pretty good fishing stories come through on the forums this year: Till's shortbilled spearfish, the monster hapuka Matt and the boys got down south, chrisp and Daz at CI, some big tailor coming in from the river and northern beaches and some pretty epic plastics sessions.

Overall how would you rate your year of fishing and what was the best session / highlight?

Unfortunately for me fishing has been pretty light on this year but the standout moment would have to be spending a day fishing in Amsterdam.  To fish for different species in a different country was pretty unique and something I won't forget in a hurry.

Tokushima reels

Anyone used Tokushima reels before? Are they good enough to last a season?

Flathead parasite

Does anyone notice parasites on flathead ?

Went for a flick this arvo at Swan and hit a flathead. Took home to gut and scale it. When I was marinating it with salt, realise two worms wriggling out from the mouth. Took some shots of the worms...they can't stop wriggling on the plate. Not sure if it is the salt making them uncomfy.... Pull off another 4 from the mouth area after those 2 on the photo.

Honestly speaking, this is the 3rd flathead I took home from the river and all 3 have these little black parasites. I am pretty sure now most if not ALL flatheads from the swan have these little buggers.

  1. Did anyone share the same experience from keeping a Swan flatty ?
  2. Is that a leech or a paraiste worm ?
  3. Does it pose any harm to humans or it is just a harmless parasite that affects fish ?

Thanks...

River session tomorrow

 Hi Guys

Taking the boat out into the swan early tomorrow for the first crack of hitting some tailor, going to put in at deep water point and then make our way up to the narrows and near the old brewry, as I have heard that there is a fair bit of a bite going on! Hoping to give some lures a crack, whith a variety of metal twistys, divers and poppers, taking out a couple of first timers fishers, see if we cant get into some! (but some mulies as a bit of backup)

Also on another topic, just got the 50 etec serviced up at waterworld, pretty happy with the service, but we got done a deal when we bought it, being told it had at most 440 hours on it, printout says 1609. :( But the good news is steve said that everything is looking good in side, and should last a long while yet :)

Josh - 14 foot white dehavilland with blue etec on the back.

Long over due for a fish

Price matching

Just curoius, does anyone think its unreasonable to ask a local tackle store if they can price match items which are advertised online by other tackle stores within Australia?

Reason i ask is i did visit a local tackle store and asked if they could match the price i had found from an online store (Australian online store not overseas) and was told its unreasonable to expect local stores to be able to match prices by Australian companies advertised online?

Am i being unreasonable in asking the question?

Not talking about cheap items either, in excess of $500 per item.

Cheers

Fisheries management article - new regulations

Not expressing any comment one way or another on the below, but thought a few people might find it interesting.

13. Fishing industry overhaul to have huge impact on jobs, tourismCrikey naturalist Lionel Elmore writes:AMATEUR FISHERMEN, COMMERCIAL FISHERMEN, FISH AND CHIPS, FISHING FLEETS, RECREATIONAL FISHERIES, VICTORIAN DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRIES

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Victoria seems to have nearly gotten away with very limited consultation before undertaking the most extensive reform of fisheries in Australia's history.

It's about capping catches and enabling trade between 270,000-700,000 people in recreational fishing, 400-800 in commercial fishing and the entire Aboriginal community. All with just one month's consultation planned and a report on the web that still has the wrong closing date for submissions, and that has been extended from November to March.

The document Future Fisheries Strategies -- Proposals to Reform was released in October. There are no descriptions of any fisheries -- and no economic data on the income and jobs they generate for regional economies, tourism or Aboriginal people. There is no clear argument made for the need to reform. The environment and habitat, relied on by fish, is mentioned but its protection and legislative change to manage it, is ruled out.

It's not just what it tells you that is worrying -- it is what it leaves out -- the management costs and red tape implied and possible -- all sounding much like management that's done elsewhere.

It was likely drafted with an ex-manager from New Zealand Fisheries where almost all fisheries, except recreational fishing, is under tradable quota mostly owned by a handful of companies.

The language used, such as "best available science" is American and the international group, the Worldwide Fund for Nature is said to have replaced Victorian National Parks Association in representing marine conservation. The membership of the Stakeholder Reference Group, which appears to have overseen the development of this reform, has not been revealed.

The "strategy" cites the Canadian halibut fishery as an ideal example:

"This case study highlights the potential for market based resource allocation mechanisms as an alternative way to manage the competition between commercial and recreational fishing when the resource is fully utilised and it is unacceptable to allow recreational catches to continue to grow in an unconstrained way."

Quota management applies in Canada and many Commonwealth fisheries. It is about capping the catches and enabling the most efficient operators to buy and trade quota from the least efficient with fish "ownership" often shifting to the corporate sector.

The practice in Victoria outlined in this proposal involves regulating every catch in every fishery. This kind of management assumes that only the catch of fish set their population. This is plausible in the public mind for commercial fisheries -- but not for people catching fish with hooks. This is especially so when tagging shows many commercial fish and recreational species fished, range through Bass Strait to Tasmania and even across to New Zealand. It goes on to say:

"It has the potential to provide a way to enable recreational fishing to grow, whilst providing a choice about either cutting bag limits or buying commercial quota. However, the trading system can only work well if the governance structures are well developed -- it needs to be clear what entity will be able to buy, hold and trade shares on behalf of the recreational sector. Information about the level of take from each sector is also critical to make this system work."

In consultation, Fisheries said that this was just an example -- not a model -- but it sounds like a plan.

The Department of Primary Industries' Future Fisheries Strategies -- Proposals to Reform would need the largest government department in Victoria to tax and manage the catches and trade in units of the catch landed by everyone who catches a fish.

On TV now is the New Zealand-made series Coastwatch on Channel Seven at 7.30pm Sundays. It shows New Zealand enforcement officers at massive roadblocks prosecuting families for catching too many pippies, fish and their abalone-poa, etc. Is this what this reform means for Victoria's or indeed Australia's future?

This "strategy" is vague, badly written and yet proposes irreversible effective privatisation of all fish, formerly "common property", to be enshrined in "yet to be revealed" legislation. Under this strategy, all commercial, recreational and Aboriginal fishfolk will be directly impacted and will pay for it under "full cost recovery". The public will pay through the high price of fish, loss of jobs and tourism.
