GP7000 or Navman trackfish 6600
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Wed, 2011-10-05 22:40Hi all, I am after some advise. I am getting a Furuno 585 with M260 tranny from a sponsor for this site. Currently I have a Navman 6600 for my sounder and a GP 7000 for my plotter. Which one do I keep as a plotter Gp 7000 or Trackfish 6600. The Trackfish is nicely mounted in the dash in front of steering wheel, which would have to be removed and panel replaced to suit the GP 7000, if I end up keeping the Gp 7000. I know that the GP7000 is worth way more, it also has a more recent C Map than the Trackfish 6600. I will then mount the 585 on the dash where the GP 7000 is currently.
Just wanna know what others would do? Look forward to your replies.

How do you target YTK??
Submitted by Hook_er on Wed, 2011-10-05 20:52What seems to be the best way to target Yellow Tail Kingfish??
Do they just rock-up unannounced or can you target them as you would Sambos??
Once they're around they will hit Knife jigs, SPs and most baits.
They are heaps of fun to catch and better yet taste great cooked or raw.
I would like a bit of knowlege on how to actually target them ie; what time of year?, what kind of ground? wrecks, channels etc......
Cheers again.

Tips for making your own berley (and not by emptying your stomach)
Submitted by randall df223 on Wed, 2011-10-05 19:43Has anyone got any tips on making your berley? I've read about combining pollard, tuna oil and bread, but was wondering what else people use and how they prepare it? I went and spent $5 on pre mix berley for berley sinkers, $10 on berley pellets for the berley cage and $8 on tuna oil today, and am thinnking there must be a more cheaper way... Does anyone reccycle fish scraps or crab shells etc etc?

Where can I get the sealer bags with the portable pump to help freeze fish??
Submitted by PattyT on Tue, 2011-10-04 21:02Hey guys, Iv seen them use these on adventure bound when they portion up the fish for freezing. Would definitely help the fish keep alot better in the freezer. Im not after the electric sealer but the one where you pump the air out of the bags using a little pump. Cant seem to find exactly what im after on ebay..
Thanks in advance

Cervantes to Leeman - Seaweed report needed
Submitted by buschy on Tue, 2011-10-04 20:39Hi folks,
Heading away for a long overdue LB adventure with fellow fishwrecked junkie Simmo Ryan.
I was just slightly north of Cervantes a few weeks back and there was a heap of weed on the beach. The water was slightly murky and there was a little weed in the water, but nothing to put you off fishing. This time of year the beaches around Leeman and further north are usually very weedy and the water a muddy brown close in with some areas hard to fish.
Just wandering if anyone has either fished the region or taken notice of the current situation? Need to make a call on where we go prior to the weekend.
Cheers
Buschy :-)

How do you rig Spanner crabs for Bluebone??
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2011-10-04 16:09Probably only for the northerners, but southerners also raid the north. I have been advised about numerous ways to rig these tough little mudcrap imitations to a hook, but the crab has more often than not been eaten off. I have been hooking it through the claw with the rest off the crab hanging free. I have been told that the bluebone munch on the crab body but cant resist the claw and thus your on. Wrong so far (for me that is).
Even heard of some glueing the hooks on to their back with epoxy!!!?
Now I dont want to use a 100lb+ handline but a descent spin outfit to tackle with them, but I am determined to concurr this elusive beast in a good size. Caught heaps off u/s bluebone/tuskfish, usually as a by-catch targetting other species. I tend to approach each trip with a mission goal but after the Mrs starts cleaning up on all sorts of bottom dwellers on bait I still revert to this smelly habit often. Concurred a few trout now, so mission is bluebone again.
Cheers for any info.

Half Day Charter - Perth
Submitted by mattyoga on Tue, 2011-10-04 15:07I'm looking to get some presents for people in the form of a fishing charter, though have roughly $120 per person to play with. It seems all the charter boats in Perth want to head out half way to africa and catch behemoths and so only offer full day $200 plus charters.
Does anyone know if there is a company that offers half day charters for around the $100-120 mark? Even a day out chasing squid and skippy would be fine - these are non fishing friends so 20kg+ sambos are not necessary.
Cheers
Matt

DoF media release on closure in Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-10-03 22:03The annual pink snapper spawning closure in Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds is now in force and recreational fishers are reminded of the importance the fishing break provides to the species.
South West Bioregions Manager Kevin Donohue said it was essential that fishers observed the closure to pink snapper fishing that applied in the Sounds.
“The four month spawning closure, which began on Saturday (1 October), runs until Wednesday 1 February next year (2012),” Mr Donohue said.
“Pink snapper enter the Sounds each year to spawn, when the water temperature starts to rise in spring and these spawning grounds, on the doorstep of the Perth metropolitan area, play a vital role in supporting the species.
“It is important that adequate protection is provided for the breeding fish.”
“Research tagging work has shown pink snapper will travel considerable distances to join the spawning aggregation and Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are the most important nursery area for pink snapper in the West Coast Bioregion (that extends from near Augusta in the South to north of Kalbarri).
“During the closure period, pink snapper taken outside of the Sounds can be transported through, and landed within, Cockburn and Warnbro Sound.”
Mr Donohue said pink snapper was also one of the species that could not be taken, during the annual demersal fishing closure for the West Coast Bioregion, which would be in place from Saturday 15 October and continue up to and including Thursday 15 December.
“Recreational fishers should be congratulated for abiding by the closure during past years and demonstrating responsibility and stewardship for this very important fishery,” he said.
“It will take time for West Coast demersal scalefish to fully recover, given that species like dhufish and pink snapper are slow-growing and can live to nearly 40 years of age.”
Information about the full list of fish species, which are subject to the demersal closure, is available on the Department of Fisheries website at www.fish.wa.gov.au or from departmental offices. Look for the Recreational Fishing Guide – West Coast Region.

Kalbarri- murchison rivermouth treacherous conditions
Submitted by West coast pom on Mon, 2011-10-03 11:43Hi all,
I'm a regular visitor to Kalbarri WA but for the first time this year I'm taking my boat (5.5m Genesis) and I'm looking for some pointers on predicting the conditions on the infamous "washing machine" conditions at the mouth of the Murchison.
I'm a competent boatie, - ive been through the mouth a few times but always got lucky with the weather and so haven't been caught out yet! My question is not HOW to get in and out of the river, my question is: "is a specific combination of conditions that turn it really nasty?"
Is it say just a strong westerly? Or is it incoming tide combined with high swell etc etc if I knew this then I can limit my chances of having to wait for a cray boat to come in to follow!!
I'll be asking the locals at Xmas but nice to get other opinions etc
Can anyone help? There isn't much on the Internet besides "be careful" which is obvious!!
Cheers
James

Dampier Fishing fun
Submitted by crasny1 on Sun, 2011-10-02 18:02With the westerlies forecast all weekend and even into Monday just had to go for a bash. Still not possible to go wide and certainly a day for the lea offered by islands. Still some fun to be had.
Moved to one of our favourite westerly leas and tucket in fairly close, but it was still blowing with the recorded gust of 28knots at Dampier on return.
We must be bloody mad.
Anyway I was targetting trout, and Gillian was just doing her usual thing. F$%#ng outfishing me. First over the size in a hectic bite, so no picture taken wide was this trout. At 60cm I think her PB but we are not stats fishers.

Next overboard whilst I caught a just size NW snapper was the first of her 3 goldens.

All released well but I had to hold the fish on a wobbly boat.
I did get into some fun but only ended up with a nice cod, but nothing else off note apart from a monster cuda that fortunately bit through the leader.

Hope you enjoy this Sunday Madness going out went all conditions are sh***te. Sometimes you just have to fish.
Gear Jill's secret weapon ( I sure some can tell but thats what she calls it) and mine a Stella 8000 SW on a Sumarai Jig 10 (awesome, especially when you have to get them up fast or you hook something big).
Cheers
