Pete D's First Deepwater Fish

With the forecast for yesterday looking reasonable (especialy in the arvo) and my mate Pete D one very keen angler to tangle with his first deepwater fish I didnt need much arm twisting!

Gentlemans hour launch and off to the deep it was. Fish located and down went 2 baited up circle hooks with the wind just hinting it was going to back off!

Pete was using my new Jigging Master Titanium Evolution 400 overhead rod and my Daiwa Electric reel which was put into action on the first drop with a solid hook up that pulled some line!

Pete hooked up!

Hows it going Pete........are ya winning?

The result, Pete D's first deepwater fish and a cracker at that................Bass Groper (weighed 33.5kg)

I had a few drops after that but zip..........mission was to get Pete onto his first deepwater fish and that he did...........well done mate

Plenty of whales around that surrounded us  and a sun fish that cruised up to my boat which was cool!

Coming back in with calm waters and a lazy 40knots all the way in.........great day on the water

Seeking Outrigger help/ advice

Hi Guys

Ive decided to fork out for a set of outriggers, and as this is all new territory for me, I was hoping for some guidance/ advice for people who have been there and done it before… Ive done a fair bit of reading on them, but have some questions I was hoping to get a hand with, along with any other general advice people might have…

From what Ive read, the Reelax brand seems to be the way to go(?) , but from what I know so far (I think Ive got the basic mechanics  of how they work etc covered, but in terms of selection and installation, the following questions have come up already…

1- Mounting position: I was thinking of mounting them on the raised/ taller section of my rig near the cabin (Ive included a pic of my boat in this post) just before the rego number stickers… the existing rod holders that would service them are about 2/3rds of the way up the lower flat section of the gunnels- is this positioning correct and would the intended mounting placement be strong enough to hold them in the long term without risking damage to the boats structure?

2- Mounting type: There seems to be two types of Reelax mountings to choose from:

TTopper (more expensive) http://www.reelax.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=253&products_id=881&osCsid=ad713a90e9e327c1e476d40be9a1d9eb

And

Gunnel mounts  http://www.reelax.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=253&products_id=842&osCsid=ad713a90e9e327c1e476d40be9a1d9eb

Which of these would be more suited to my setup?

and finally

3-Length: What lengths would be the best for a boat of this size? Would the shortest models be sufficient as its not an overly large boat…

Cheers guys, I know that’s a lot of questions, but any advice would be fantastic and much appreciated!

Fish ID

Caught this stripey thing like one of those little fkrs but heaps bigger in 80m, any ideas brain trust?

first baldy for troy and a cracker at that!!!

myself and troy headed out on a late start, 9.30am before the first line hit the drink,

first drop for me resulted in a 55cm dhu which was released and we thought we were in for a good day, but it seem to go quiet for a couple of hours pretty much instantly after that.

then a few hours later all sorts of things came over the side, couple of small pinkys, 2 nice size queenys, 58cm kg, 48cm b/ass,

5 foot hammerhead, plus all the normal smaller stuff and then troy gets his first ever baldy at a fraction under 8kg.

pulled line like a steam train and we were calling it for a big pinky, then the baldy pops up and he is a very happy chappy.

not a bad pb to get on the board with!!

only kept the baldy, kg and the blackass, everything else was released to be caught again!

also played with the underwater camera on the bank for a little bit and seen some good things swimming around down there, a nice size sambo come to have a look at the camera as well as quite a few other fish, i am sure i seen a big dhu in the background but because i dont have a dvr yet i cant play it back, that will be next on the list!

cheers ron

Marine heatwave prompts significant abalone fishing closure

An unprecedented marine heatwave has led to a total closure of abalone fishing, from Moore River to Western Australia’s border with the Northern Territory (NT).

South West Bioregions Manager for the Department of Fisheries, Kevin Donohue said the Fisheries Minister Norman Moore had taken the precautionary step, following consultation with the West Coast Abalone Divers Association and Recfishwest.

“Both groups and the Department of Fisheries recommended the closure after significant mortalities in abalone stocks, particularly north of Kalbarri, during the marine heatwave,” Mr Donohue said.

“In reviewing the heatwave, marine scientists tracked an extensive patch of very warm water that grew and moved southwards from November 2010 and did not dissipate until late March.

Sea temperatures in many areas were more than three degrees above average and the warmest ever recorded in some places. That not only devastated mid west and northern abalone stocks, but impacted on other fish species too.”

Mr Donohue said a full stock assessment of abalone, north of Moore River, would take place during the next 12 months, however, he warned that prohibitions or restrictions might be required over several seasons to allow the abalone stocks to recover.

“The time required to rebuild stocks can’t be determined at this stage, but the department will seek ways of enhancing the restoration of abalone stocks,” he said.

“Commercial abalone fishing operators have already voluntarily agreed not to fish stocks in the area affected by the marine heatwave.”

The Northern Zone recreational abalone fishing season (from Greenough River to the NT border) normally runs from 1 October to the 15 May, but will not be open this year, however, the Southern Zone (between the Busselton Jetty and the South Australia), which shares the same season dates with the Northern Zone, will be open as normal next month.

Mr Donohue said part of the closure area also impacted on the West Coast Zone and no abalone fishing would be allowed between Moore River and the Greenough River.

“For the rest of the West Coast Zone, between Moore River and Busselton Jetty, fishing will begin on 6 November and be allowed for one hour only (7-8am) on that day and for one hour only (7-8am) on the first Sundays of December, January, February and March,” he said.

As this closure may mean fishers holding recreational abalone licences will not be able to fish as planned, the Department of Fisheries will refund the licence fee. Fishers requiring a refund should contact the department on 9482 7333 and make application before 31 October 2011.

Carnarvon...... Inshore Options?

G'day fellas

New member here.

After 15 years in Kununurra it's time for a change of scenery, looks like I'll be moving to Carnarvon around the end of the year. I been reading a bit about fishing down there, lots of stuff about Quobba and Gnarloo as well as Bernier and Dorre Islands. Whats the fishing like in close to the mainland around Carnarvon? Is the fishing good or do you realy have to travell out to the islands for a feed and some fun?

I have a 6m Quintrex center consul that I've modified to suit the big rivers and mainly calm sea's of the Kimberley and NT, it will handle choppy conditions but is a real handfull in swell. The main prob is that it is powered by a 225 Optimax (that should read overpowered) and mounted to the transom via a Quicksilver hydraulic jack plate that lifts the motor verticaly. The problem is that it cavitates in large swell and can become very hard to controll. I can remove the jack plate which should make it ride better in rough conditions but I haven't tryed that yet.

anyway, here's a pic of my Qunnie Tinny.

Swan River Sharks

Hey guys,

Bass Groper

Well, I have just returned from Harro's joint and there are a few excited boys taking photo's and sinking piss.

Matty Miller has caught a winkle size groper in about 57 mtrs, jagged on a jig up the coit.

Give me strength, you'd think he broke the State record or something,

I am sure pics and tall tales will follow, and i will be looking for the inevitable photoshop.

Noob Fishing off Little Island

Hi

I am a relatively inexperienced skipper having purchased a 15ft glass runabout just over a year ago. I have recently started to head off hillarys to get stuck in to some fishing. Usually I head out to little island and fish in front of that and along marmion reef. However lately I have not been catching anything anywhere along there. Is anyone else having much luck around this area????

I am now starting to gain familiarity with the area/ reefs and where I can and cant go. I have also purchased a chartplotter and fishfinder so I am keen to try and find some good spots. As a beginner I have been focussing on herring, skippy and KG. Whats the best way for me find good ground??? simply troll around and watch the plotter??? I am hoping to head out to the three mile reef and have a crack there.

Any advise would be much appreciated

Cheers

I was fishing asi rocks last night and seen a boat about 2km out shoot a flare so we got a bit worried and then it shot another one so we knew something was wrong and rang the police to let them know.
2 hours later another flare goes off, so we got the number for cockburn sea rescue and told them and within half he was getting towed in, i was just wondering if it was anyone of the site and if they were ok??
