Advice on PFDs please
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Thu, 2010-07-22 19:42Hi all Im after a bit of info on PFDs if anyone can help
living in Carnarvon I spend a lot of time on the quobba rocks (hence the nickname i guess) and have decided to do the right n safe thing and get myself a lifejacket to wear when im on some of the lower ledges, just incase the worse happens and i end up in the drink...
I dont mind paying whatever for one, but am a bit picky as to what it must be like:
-must be self (auto) inflating, ie: if i was to bash my head and go unconsious it would inflate by itself and give me half a chance.
-must be light and not too cumbersome- some of the ledges are a pain in the a** to climb to during the summer in even the lightest clothing.
anyone have one they could recommend or know of one that fits the above description? Id found some on the net a while ago when I was looking at them, but buggered if I can find the website again.
Thanks in advance for any help/ advice anyone can give!

Southern Right Whale leaps on yacht deck
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2010-07-21 23:32
A couple out on a quiet boating trip off the coast of South Africa got the shock of their lives when they were suddenly joined on deck by a 40-ton southern right whale.
Yacht skipper Ralph Mothes is seen in this amazing photograph dwarfed by the whale as it breaches right next to his yacht Intrepid. A split-second after the picture was taken the 30ft-long whale slammed into the deck, snapping the steel mast like a twig and crushing the coach roof and side rigging. A tourist from Botswana who was aboard a nearby sightseeing boat captured the before and after shot.
Southern rights, an endangered species, can grow up to 50ft long and weigh 60 tons, so this one was probably a youngster.
A 30ft southern right whale towers over Ralph Mothes a split second before slamming into the deck of the Intrepid training yacht. This amazing shot was captured from a nearby sightseeing vessel in at Hermanus, 80 miles east of Cape Town, South Africa
Mr Mothes and Paloma Werner took cover as the whale thrashed about on deck before slipping back into the water. Today the pair were thankful that they were aboard a steel-hulled training yacht, which didn't suffer any structural damage. A fibreglass vessel would have been destroyed.
We'd spotted the whale about 100 metres away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us. I assumed it would go underneath the boat but instead it sprang out of the sea. We were very lucky to get through it, as the sheer weight of the thing was huge."
'There were bits of skin and blubber left behind, and the mast was wrecked. It brought down the rigging too.
After thrashing about on deck, the whale slipped back into the water and left the scene of the collision. Mr Mothes and Paloma Werner were left with a broken mast and trashed yacht. They managed to make it back to the marina
There were reports that the whale had been harassed by pleasure craft before it leapt onto the Intrepid. An inflatable craft had been seen driving close to the animal moments before the incident. But experts say the young whale was more likely inexperienced with human contact and didn't know the yacht, which had its engine turned off, was there. Meredith Thornton, scientist and manager of the Cape Town Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, said: 'Whales don't see much by way of their eyes but by sound in the water.'
Whales are a common sight in the Atlantic Ocean off the Western Cape coast at this time of year as they come near the shore to breed. Thousands of tourists flock to the region's seaside resorts every year to spot the mammals during the South African winter from June to November.

Miss Werner said she first saw the whale when it was about 100m away. It breached once and, before they knew it, the whale was a mere 10m from their yacht. 'There was hardly any wind, so we couldn't get out of the way,' she said. 'We didn't have time to take any evasive action.'
But Ms Thorton said the whale was probably 'lob-tailing' in order to communicate with other whales. She added: 'If a whale wanted to be aggressive it would side-swipe the boat with its tail.'
After the incident, Mothes and Werner surveyed the damage to their yacht. 'The first thing we did was make sure there was no water downstairs. We didn't know if the whale was coming back.' They managed to turn the engine on and made it back to the marina without assistance.

Turtle dove trip
Submitted by hlokk on Wed, 2010-07-21 13:24Well, its that time of year again when the Abrolhos season is finishing up. Craig from saltwater charters has his last trip this weekend, and then the boat is heading back to Perth.
With the boat coming back, there is a lot of productive fishing ground on the way, including the imfamous turtle dove shoal, and there'll be a few spots to jump on for the trip.
Idea is to leave Geraldton Mon (26th July), get to turtle dove around 3, fish for several hours, then start hitting spots on the way back (e.g. night time pinkies, dhuies, sambos, ambers, etc).
Get to jurien-ish way by dawn and fish there all morning (keep moving south and hitting spots). Then steam back to Hillarys for Tue evening.
So that would roughly put a time as follows:
12-3 (3) - get to turtle dove
3-9 (6) - fish turtle dove (if good stick around, if not move a little earlier)
9-5 (8) - work way to jurien for dawn. Should be about 6hrs travel, so 2-3hrs actual fishing on the way
5-11 (6) - fish jurien-ish spots (cervantes/jurien/etc is area) - which has a few fish...
11-6 (7) - head back to perth (may be able to get in later, hence more fishing time in between, but will check)
So works out to about 12+ actual fishing hours (weather permitted) once you take out the major travel. Keep in mind most day charters are about 8 hrs, and thats including all the travel (plus you get to fish turtle dove and jurien)
Cost would be $300. Will need to sort out how we'd be getting up there, but will figure it out if people are interested.
Will also see what weather's doing, but for now, let me know if you're interested?
The double-wahoo's we got on the trip up at the start of the season:

A tentative list:
1. Matt (though I need to sort out with work)
2. Nelly
3. Brody
4. Alfred
5. Helen?
6.
7.
8.

Car broken into at Kwinana Boat Ramp
Submitted by beau on Wed, 2010-07-21 12:02GRRRRRRRR my car got broken into at kwinana boat ramp yesterday afternoon between 1pm - 5.30pm while me and another member, Goatlobster, were out fishing on the Jetski.
Assholes smashed the front passenger window and stole both our wallets, my iPhone, Panasonic Lumix underwater camera, and some sunglasses. We found Ben's (Goatlobster) set of car keys in my ignition, thats the part that scares me the most, they actually tried to steal the car!
A couple of hours later i got a facebook message from Ben, saying that someone had contacted him via Facebook, and told him that they had found his wallet. Apparantely this guy had also been broken into but in the carpark near Fremantle Power Station, and somehow he found a stash of stuff that had been stolen, nothing valuable, just wallets and stuff.. He also said a couple of guys fishing down the road had also been broken into!
I havent heard from the guy about any of my gear, but apparantely they went back to the place this morning and found a whole heap of stuff that looked like had been stolen, along with needles and the like, resembling some kind of junkie scum camp.
Lets hope the police catch these guys and most of our stuff can be returned.
GRRR gets me so angry!!

More tackle junkie news
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2010-07-20 11:12Sportfishing Industry Awards 2010 “Best of Show” Honors
Fourteen companies take top honors during world’s largest sportfishing trade show
Las Vegas, NV - July 15, 2010 – ICAST 2010, the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades, the world’s largest sportfishing tradeshow, is in full swing from July 14-16, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Over 7,000 representatives from the sportfishing industry, including more than 2,000 buyers and over 500 media representatives, are gathered to see the latest innovations in tackle, gear and apparel and network with the global sportfishing community. The sportfishing industry’s premier trade event is produced by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the industry’s trade association, which is headquartered in Alexandria, Va.
This year, the 53rd year of ICAST, the New Product Showcase, the tradeshow’s flagship event, was more competitive than ever. Sponsored by Fishing Tackle Retailer, produced by ESPN Outdoors/BASS, 210 exhibiting companies entered 750 tackle products and accessories into the New Product Showcase. The product category with the most product submissions was the hard lure category.
This year the G.Loomis NRX, was voted by buyers and media as the most innovative product in the ICAST 2010 New Product Showcase in both the freshwater rod category and the overall “Best of Show.”
Five 2009 showcase winners — G. Loomis, Lowrance-Navico, Pure Fishing, Sebile Innovative Fishing and Shimano American Corporation – won awards again in 2010.
Shimano American Corporation took home four best of show awards in the hard lure, freshwater reel, saltwater reel and saltwater rod categories.
“The New Product Showcase continues to amaze me with the quality of the new products submitted for consideration,” said ASA President and CEO Mike Nussman. “I want to congratulate all of the winners of this year’s Showcase and also congratulate everyone who participated, including the companies who worked hard to develop these innovations and the buyers and media who served as judges.”
Making up a special section of ICAST’s 400,000-square-foot show floor, the New Product Showcase provides special visibility for the industry’s latest innovations in gear and accessories. Buyers and media representatives judged the products based on their level of innovation, execution, workmanship and practicality to select “Best of Show” honors in 17 categories, as well as the overall “Best of Show” winner.
