Winter blue manners
Submitted by Paul_86 on Sun, 2010-07-11 16:10G'day all
Im just trying to chase some info on how or where to look to catch a few blue manner crabs. Ive only ever scooped them in the summer but im guessing that isn't gonna work this time of the year so drop nets would be the go but what do i look for in a spot? Just drop them in some deeper water or is there more too it? I would prefer to chase them in the swan but dont mind going down to mandurah if thats my best bet. Cheers

Help - Where to try for Grey Band , Hapuka & big eye
Submitted by Paul N on Fri, 2010-07-09 14:33A posted pic of a GB has prompted me to get off my ass , swallow my pride and ask for help. Hoping to get some help on where I should try for these fish.
They are on my "to catch list" and I have tried a couple of times but no luck. I launch from Ocean reef and have had no idea where to go for them . That in mind i've just headed due west to the 200 to 250mtr mark and had a go . Have no idea what to look for on the sounder or if i'm even close to places they may inhabit. Don't think I would see fish but would think I would see some sort of structure . Haven't found anything that looks like it would hold fish. All I find is flat and featureless .
Its a long way to go and only get the chance to get that far out a couple of times a year ,weather permitting. I was hoping someone would be kind enough to give the heads up on a general area to try , what to look for on the sounder and are these fish seasonal or there all year round. Am I wasting my time out from Ocean Reef ? The winter swells will stop me heading out there but trying to do some homework for the future. Not asking for gps positions ,but would be nice LOL.
Any help would be great. Thanks Paul

Fly fishing film festival - FW social?
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Fri, 2010-07-09 12:08
I went to the RISE Fly Fishing Film Festival last year and it was pretty cool, there was some fantastic fishing and great photography to boot.. I don't fly fish but I walked out at the end of it pretty amped to give it a go (still haven't but haahaha)
Anyway last year's was held at the Luna, it started at about eight o'clock but they some free cans on ice for anyone who got there early. Was good to stand around and have a chat with other fishos. Once it kicked off Nick got up and spoke about a few of his fishing adventures he'd been on, primarily a couple of trips chasing bones... at the Cocos Islands I think. Then for the next couple of hours he played 20min sections from different fly fishing vids that had come on the market recently. Off the top of my head I think there was some chasing redfish in the States, bonefish on Cocos, permit in Florida and some crazy footage chasing taimen in Mongolia.
This year they say they're heading to Mexico, Iceland, NZ and it looks like some local footage up north chasing permit (few grabs from the vids in the link below).
Anyway just putting out an expression of interest to see if anyone wants to hook up for it this year... it's on Monday 16 August in Freo, 7.30-9.30pm, tickets $25... maybe head out somewhere afterwards for a yarn? It's still over a month away so I'll resurrect the thread closer to the date if it drops off.

EVER HAD A TRIP AS BAD AS THIS???
Submitted by Dr Trunk on Fri, 2010-07-09 11:22Being a land based fisher for most of my life, i jumped at a chance to bust my deep sea cherry by heading up the Monte Bello Islands for a 5 day trip with 8 likeminded mates in mid 2007.
All the new deep sea gear was brought tackle, lures, etc and the 2 day trek (by coaster bus) up to Onslow was slow but enjoyable. We were all keen and full of beans whilst we loaded the boat on the fuelling jetty. (Compared to some of the other charter vessels tied to the jetty, our boat looked like it had seen better days however, being so pumped we didn't take much notice.) So we finally leave Onslow, smiles all round, high fives etc....... we should have known that the trip was going to be jinxed, when after 2 hours of heading out from Onslow (half way to Barrow Island) we turn around and start heading east!. Apparently the skipper hadn't re gassed the refrigeration system, so a quick trip to Onslow was required to gas up. After that small hiccup, we set off again, and being the skippers first trip of the season we were towing out the 18 foot tender behind the mother ship.
We finally get to Barrow island anchor up, and have a fish. What a blast!! Copious amounts of fish are being caught, real mind blowing stuff. The skipper says its time to head to the Montes, so we pull anchor and get ready to go. Just as we are about to take off, the skipper tells one of the boys to give the tender a push away from the side of the mother ship. The tender was bobbing about a bit in the swell, and as Gavin lent over to push the tender away, his thumb was jammed between the two boats and SMASHED to pieces! (We knew it was serious because his thumb now looked like a split sausage) So, it was back to Onslow to drop Gavin off to the flying doctors. (Gavin stayed overnight at Onslow nursing post before RFDS to Perth in the morning. He received micro surgery and rehab for a extended period before partial recovery of the thumb. No refund (or apology) from the skipper was given.) We got back to Onslow that evening, and stayed overnight on the boat at the refuelling jetty.
Next morning we left Onslow (AGAIN) and started the 4 hour journey to the MBIs. This time we got over there without a hitch. Amazing scenery, great weather (apart from the wind) and AWESOME fishing. (we ended up with Reds, Perch, Rankin, Cobia, Estuary Cod not bad considering we lost so much time thru travelling) Anyways, all seemed good until the last night, where we decided to have one last fish before heading home. Great fishing again, but it was getting late, so we started the long trip back to Onslow. Maybe we should have taken notice in the afternoon (as we were heading out of the islands) when the skipper said " Gee, the tide is really low.....I haven't seen THAT island before......"
We are now about 3 hours and 45 mins into the trip home (approximately 2am) cruising at about 15 knots, everybody besides myself and my trusty sidekick Mr Botti, are asleep (including the Skipper) when i hear something not quite right......sort of like sand scraping against the hull of the boat. All of a sudden, the boat tips on a 45 degree angle and stops dead! There is crap everywhere on the deck, a few rods went overboard, all of the guys in the sleeping quarters fall on top of each other, general chaos and confusion follow until we figure out what just happened......WE HAD RUN AGROUND! we were beached! Stuck on a large sand bar a few kilometres out from Onslow. (VERY low tide can do that to you) After 10 minutes of trying the skipper eventually rocks us off the sand bar and we head back to the refuelling jetty at Onslow. By this time there are some very shaken and VERY angry fishos ready to lynch the skipper!
)
Now you think it can’t get much worse however, the skipper went home for a stiff drink and a lie down (he left us all to sleep ((and calm down)) on the boat for the evening) and forgot to turn off the kill tank refrigeration system! So we awoke to a block of frozen fish that needed a few hours to thaw before filleting.
All up we lost approximately 20 hours of fishing time (due to travelling back and forth) our 5 day trip shrunk into 2 and a half.
No apology, reasons or refunds were given by the skipper.
Can anybody better that?
N.B. The same crew are heading back up to the Montes this week (but with a different charter company) for 7 days. We were all of the opinion that we have unfinished fishing business to attend to.

Ghost of the Alkimos
Submitted by Indiana on Thu, 2010-07-08 09:02Guys & Girls
Probably all who frequent this web site would have heard , seen ,fished or dived near the wreck of the Alkimos.
I wonder how much people know about it's History and its journey over the years before being wrecked on our coast .
The ship had a very checkered past and those interested in superstition and myth's should have a read of a book on the subject
written by the late Jack Wong Sue , " Ghost of the Alkimos ".
For those that dont know Jack Sue ,he was a member of Z Force during the second world war and operated behind enemy lines
in Borneo . Jacks love during peace time was diving and he owned a dive store in Midland ( I think ).
Anyway I think you may be able to still souce this book ..........its a great read ,and will certainly question your belief in the unknown .
Enjoy !

Daiwa Heartland surf
Submitted by JakeB on Wed, 2010-07-07 22:31Hey guys, does anyone know who stocks the Daiwa Heartland surf rods? I'd like to check out the heavy model. Also how do these compare with the Daiwa sensor surf 12ft med/heavy spin? they are both rated 2 to 4oz casting weights. The rod would be used for tailor and school mulloway, with 3oz sinker plus bait... eg pilchard or small fillet baits.. Also if anyone has experience with the Xzoga Mastery 12ft feel free to comment. Budget for the rod is under $300. Thanks in advance..

Dawesville Cut Report
Submitted by Davy_G on Wed, 2010-07-07 20:14hi guys
went down to the cut today and fished with my uncle,
we got 11 fish, 7 gars and 4 herring, could have got more but the morning shift had filled them up, they were chockers with burley!
I ended up only getting one herring as i was using placcies, God it was annoying! bloody herring taking it, dropping it, taking it, dropping it.
anyone got any tips on how to convert hits to hookups when using 3' minnows?

Snapping Braid
Submitted by just dhu it on Wed, 2010-07-07 20:10I have had problems over the past few years when fishing with braid, when i get snagged up i try several times to pull it off then i try whip the tip to try to release it from the snag , most times the braid snaps up near the surface, or occasionaly snaps above my 2 mt double, snapping down the bottom i cant be sure that the double may have snagged but up on the surface is annoying especially when your in 60 mts. i have had the problem on several different rods and lines which i have changed to ensure its not damaged and mostly on 15,20 25 kg braid ????
