Fishing Discussion

General Fishing Chat

Woohoo finally!! Part two

Part two. Without a happy ending.

Got to Woodmans Point at 6.45pm and managed to get the bait in the water by 7. Met Brendon(Hsiehlung), Ron and Shane members from fishwrecked there. Managed to get a couple tailors and it all went cold after 8.30. I kept on putting live baits on the big rod but crabs love them... by that time I ran out of live bait, so I got a couple live scallies from my aunty and used them. At around 10.30 I did my rountine bait check and had to put on fresh bait, I hooked up half a scallie and casted it out about 50-60m. Sat the drag and was about to put it down on the ground when the line was screaming!!! The bait was in the water for only 10secs and something got it. This thing was pulling like crazy, fighting harder than the ray I caught 2 days ago. Had to tightened the drag further otherwise I would be running out of line(had about 80 or so meters left). Called my uncle for assistance to get the belt thingo on and put the rod in. By this time I was surround with people watching. Even though the drag was really tight it was still spooling my line out. I had to hold on to the line and pull and reel in at the same time. After 15 mins. Some jackass 4m from me decided to cast his line out when everybody had reeled theirs in... and guess what? it crossed my line and hooked it. He reeled it in till it was about 2 metres from the tip of my rod and the line snapped... I was so bloody pissed...and that ass could also come to me afterwards and say  bad luck must of been a big fish. WTH were you thinking????? GOD... had a guy come ask me how far I cast it out while I was busy fighting it..He kept insisting that it was the sea lion that was around the jetty.. For goodness sake This thing is like 70m or so out. And the sea lion was like 5m from where I was standing. I swear it must be a shark of some sort tho. Don't think rays hang 5ft below the surface.

Gonna have to buy a thicker line now. And probably another reel. Any suggestions on what reel? A big reel with lots of room for line and good drag system thing.

PS. To Brendon and Ron where were you guys!?!? You should of stayed haha.

Black bream around Matilda Bay

I've been around UWA a bit this week, and scouted off the jetties in the area in my spare time. Two days ago (Weds) I walked around Jo-Jo's jetty and I saw dozens (literally) of bream swimming around, along with a school of what I thought were hardyheads going nuts. Some of the bream were good pan-sized specimens. Best of all was that I saw no blowies around.
So today I came prepared with my rod, and an assortment of lures. I got down to Jo-Jos at lunch to find the area filled with jellyfish. In some areas I would say the water was 50% jellyfish. I couldn't see the schools of beautiful bream that I had been staring at for half an hour just two days before, and blowies were thick as flies. I cast around anyway... there were some bream there, as I had two follow my lure right to the jetty. Then after those followers, nothing.

Its often the way, when you see some fish cranking you are not prepared, then come back prepared and turn up donuts.

Has anyone had any luck in that general area lately? I've got some lunch breaks to fill next week :-)

CRC Silicone Spray on Fishing Reels

Hi everyone

Does anybody know if it's good or safe to spray your fishing reel on the outside and outside moving parts with CRC Silicone Spray.

I normally use WD40 as I have a fishing book that says to use a water displacing spray on the reel to keep it in good nick.

The Silicone spray is a lot less oilier but not sure how it affects a reel's external moving parts and finish.

Bali here I come

Dont bother with a reply. BUT I AM GOING to try and fish.

CU in 2 weeks.

Mean fishing and fun in the meantime all.

rod/reel reccomendations

hey everyone. i want to get a new rod mainly for bottom bouncing. i have a pfluengeur g40l combo atm (15-24Kg) but i am looking for a spinning rod and reel. not looking to buy straight away but i was thinking of maybe a t-curve 200 or 400 for incase i ever want to go sambo jigging. with that said i also need to decide on the reel to go with it. i was on absolute fishing charters on tuesday and they had okuma salinas and they didnt seem to bad but did get a bit harder to wind(less smooth) under more pressure. not looking to spend to much though as i also need to buy a new Ra speargun soonish and also a car sometime next year. any help would be appreciated. with this new rod and reel i hope to catch my first dhuie 2. so if anyone need some one to chip in for fuel/bait and are going for dhuies i can still use my g40l combo or my new combo later on and i would love to come =D

cheers

Rock lobster fishery management retains confidence of international accreditor

A complete review of Western Australia’s valuable rock lobster fishery has resulted in independent and international endorsement of the State Government’s management of the resource.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today welcomed the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) renewal of certification for WA’s rock lobster fishery following an expanded annual assessment of lobster stocks.

“The MSC renewal of certification is a vote of confidence in how the State is managing our most valuable fishery,” Mr Moore said.

“WA’s rock lobster fishery was the world’s first fishery to gain global MSC certification in March 2000.

“Following recent declines in puerulus (juvenile lobster) settlement and tough decisions by the State Government to cut fishing levels, the MSC insisted on an unprecedented complete rescoring of the way it applied certification.

“It is my understanding that the MSC was fully satisfied that the rock lobster fishery continues to meet its stringent standards of management and overall stock viability. This endorsement reflects the Government’s tough decisions to protect the long-term sustainability and economic viability of the fishery.”

The Minister said an example of the State Government’s unflinching leadership was the extension of recently announced closure periods.

“I supported the rock lobster industry advisory committee’s decision to extend the closure period and ensure the overall catch target was not reached before the lucrative Chinese New Year,” he said.

“It must be noted that the industry is also under pressure as a result of high exchange rates and reduced demand in international markets for their product, which has resulted in lower beach prices for fishermen.

“As a result of my decision to close the fishery over the Christmas period, the industry has seen the beach price rise from $22kg to $32kg - reflecting the Government’s efforts to smooth the catch over a longer period.”

Mr Moore said the decision to extend the closure was made as part of the adaptive management approach adopted by the State Government to ensure the overall catch remained around 5,500 tonnes (down from traditional averages of about 11,000 tonnes).

“The most immediate change will be closure of C zone, which includes the port of Jurien, the Perth coast and South-West waters to Cape Leeuwin,” he said.

“C zone will be closed to rock lobster fishing from January 18 until January 31, following the existing weekend closure.

“Fishing will resume in C zone on February 1 through until March 11, using the balance of the catch target for the full C zone season. There will be a further C zone closure from March 12 to April 11, with fishing resuming on April 12 if that target has not been exhausted. When C zone is open, fishing will be restricted to four days per week.”

The Minister said in B zone, which stretched from north of Jurien to North West Cape, the current closure was due to end on January 24, when additional management changes would apply.

“A zone commercial rock lobster fishers will fish in B zone from January 25 until the catch target for the first half of the season is exhausted,” he said.

“After that, A zone licensees will then cease fishing until the Abrolhos Islands (A zone) season opens on March 15.

“B zone commercial fishers will fish from January 25 until March 11. B Zone will then be closed from March 12 to April 11, with fishing allowed again from April 12.

“I will continue to consult with the industry to achieve the best possible outcome for the remainder of the season.”

Hilliary's launching clarification

When Launching your boat at Hilliary's, looking from the launch area towards the water, is this correct:

far right jetty = launch only

the middle = launch AND retrieve

far left = retreive only

Hedland and Karratha advice please/desparate deckies

Gday all
very excited about getting to spend a few days between Port Hedland and Karratha with the Mrs (super-keen fisho) 22-26 Jan and hopefully catch our first barras or just have a good time. at this stage we spend Fri 22nd in PH and Sun 24th onwards in K town, sat 23rd is undecided depending on fishing opportunities.
If anyone can spare some local knowledge on times/tides and LB spots (not sure yet if i'll have a 4wd available) we would be stoked to up our chances in what will be a short window of opportunity.
if anyone happens to have a berth available for a couple of very secretive hard fishers we can pay all fuel, bait, beer, whatever. both just keen as to get out there!
we haven't been able to find any barra guides or similar so far so if anyone has contacts along those lines PLEASE let me know.
cheers and tight lines

charters and jigging

Hi all.  I was reading on another fishing web site and came across this post , which leads me to ask 2 questions 1. do sharks learn where and when easy feeds are? 2. should charter boats have a duty to preserve the sambo stocks which generate their income by moving when the sharks move in ? So i went out on Mills to do some jigging. We head to this place called the patch. They warned us straight up that sharks had been a problem. I dropped the jig on my new stella i was itching to try out and was hooked up in seconds.

Line peeling off under heaps of dragging and i am a happy camper, the stella was SMOOOOOOOOOOOTH. I want to fight this thing but i am getting nothing back and then bang 50 lb braid pings half way down :o(.

No big deal move over to next reel and am on again within seconds and winning a bit this time and then line starts peeling off triple time and jig gone.

Turns out to be a common story for the whole boat. How common ? About 90 jigs lost, using 150lb leaders and 50 - 80lb braid. How many fish to the surface - NONE. Not one got more than half way up! Some got close to halfway though i guess.

Is this other people's experience this summer with charters off hillarys?

I have been on Shikari other years and had a few lost to sharks, but nothing like this. On an up the hook up rate was pretty much 100% for me which was fun. Also the Mills guys worked hard all day rerigging and donated the 90 or so jigs without slowing down. The boat was very comfortable and breakfast and lunch and softdrinks provided. On another plug for Mills their other boat cleaned up with heaps of snapper- Pink, queen and quite a lot of good reds too. They had lots of breaksea cod and a few other things but over 30 fish i would guess.

I had a go for the shark on some serious gear and hooked up but after losing for 30 minutes we gave up and think it had probably wrapped me around the bottom. A good day out, and would have liked to see ONE landed. An interesting note was a good sized Yellow Tail Kingfish was around the boat for a bit, but gone by the time someone had rigged a popper.

SW Beach Setup

Hi all,

Have decided to get serious with my beach fishing down here in the South West so im after some help/reccommendations on a suitable setup. Had enough of the cheapo $100 10ft combo and its time to upgrade. Will be used mainly to target tailor, salmon and mulloway- and whatever by catches come by. Originally i budgeted $400 for the setup but if i really have to it can prob strech to $500. The catch is i want to buy the reel from bcf (yeah i know) because i have some vouchers for there.

Wouldnt have a clue what setup to go with so im hoping some of the experts on here can offer some suggestions and help. Had a quick look at the Shimano baitrunner reels, dont look pretty but seem pretty good feture wise. Not sure what size reel would be best though? 5000/6000/8000? And what lb mono to run? For the rod im thinking something around 12ft so i can punch it out into the surf.

Any help or recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Sam.

Furuno 585 & Lowrance HDS 7 sounders. will they run at the same time

I own the Furuno 585 with a transom mount 600w and a Navman plotter (C Map) on my UB670 Southwind, its time to upgrade my chart plotter, so I am looking at the Lowrance HDS 7 combo the mapping from what i can see is far better than my Navman using C Map.

The Idea of having a back up sounder is nice for me also giving a different veiw of the same ground, sales men recon the lowrance is equivilant to a 3kw transducer on the HDS? would i still put a 1kw on the system for the deep?

Shoot through hull transducers, do you loose much signal with them? the Southwind has limited space to mount stuff on the transom.

Will the frequencys of both sounders cancel each other out and make them not work or will it be a seperate signal that each unit has that does not confuse them?

Is anyone running these two units at the moment

Cheers

Justin

Woohoo FINALLY!

Finally caught my 1st big fish! Even though it was an eagle ray it was my 1st big fish. IT weighed roughly 15kg give or take a kg.

Got to Woodmans pt at around 7.40pm set out with and running sinker rig with  2  big snelled hooks a mullet head on it and with 50lb leader,25lb mono on a 12ft surf rod. Cast it out and let it sink set the drag properly and tried for tailor on another rod, managed to get on the 2nd cast was roughly 40cm. And managed in a couple of smaller fish. reeled in the big rod and decided to use a yellow as live bait cast it out. and left it after 10 mins i reeled in and only half was left. Hooked the remainder of the yellowtail on to the hooks and cast it.

While helping a guy next to me do his hooks and line. Another guy was looking at the reel and said " I think you got a fish mate" I was like OMG yes finally. It was pulling heaps of line so I tightened the drag and started reeling it, My uncles thought I was joking when I said I got something. Then all of a sudden one of my uncles caught my line and there we were trying to untie his. The ray pulled on the line I was holding and then only did he believe me. I grabbed my rod and went under his line to free myself and started fighting this fish. I was savoring every moment of this. All this time I wanted to catch something big...and I have finally.

It was pretty hard because I didnt have those belts with a plastic plate and hole in front to put the rod in. So I was basically supporting the rod near the groin.. and that was painful... It started pulling of more line so I tightened the drag a lil bit more. Rod was bending, the fish was pulling and I'm HIGH on the excitement. Managed to get it close to the jetty and we saw this ray at the bottom and my uncles were like anyone got a gaff? and nobody did. So were like damn... were trying to get it out by using crab pots and crab nets etc. and all failed. Then out of nowhere this nice guy came up with a giant crab net. and got it under the ray and pulled it up. Took 5 mins to bring it in but 15 to get it out... haha. Too damn happy to sleep now, thus why I'm typing this at 2 in the morning.

Next target a small shark. Any tips?

What else can be caught of Woodmans point?

PS. why is it then when i tightened the drag really tight the ray was still available to pull more line out? Is this normal?

42'C on Sunday

It's gonna be 42 on sunday.

My mate wants to go 30 mile out.

What temp do you reckon it will be out there. (From Rockingham).

Too hot or not...

Decisions???????????????????????
