Submitted by tobogan28 on Sun, 2010-01-10 18:31Hey.
Me and some mates are gonna be going fishing this week sometime and are just wondering where we should go.
We have no boat unfortunately so only land based.
So where are some good places in Bunbury and what fish should I be expecting to catch.

FURUNO
Submitted by 81macca on Sun, 2010-01-10 15:52Anydody got any tips for reading deep water. Having trouble finding any solid ground beyond 160m. When the sounder is tuned for deep water as soon as you touch the throttle the screen clutters. But this does not hapen in the shallow water wich makes me think it is not transducer location. Having more luck on 200khz than 50 thought that 50 was used in the deep? (7000f with 1kw transom mount)

Port Denison
Submitted by deefa on Sun, 2010-01-10 15:44Gday Guys and Girls,
Haven't posted here in what seems like faaaaar too long. Between new business's, new house's and Mrs Deefa and i doing our bit to keep the population of Australia on a steady incline- there hasn't been a lot of fishing time.. :-(. Fingers crossed, thats gonna change starting next week.
Heading up to Port Denison for a long overdue family holiday next week. I'll be dusting off a whole heap of gear, packing the 4wd, and setting off for what hopefully will be a fun family break, with some (hopefully lots) of fish for me and the kids... However, having never been to Denison before, we'll kinda be flying blind.
So, any of you good fisherfolk have any tips as to where, how, what to expect etc, that ya's might wanna share?? Not looking for anyone's 'honey holes', just some general info as to beach conditions, accessability, etc etc- just some clues to help unravel fishing a new area to us... Being summer on the west coast, i'm expecting some wind.. ?
Googling 'Port Denison' & 'Dongara' hasn't turned up any help/advice of any real value, so i thought i'd ask you lot. Any help & advice will be greatly appreciated. Hoping to have some pics of happy, smiling kids holding up their 'prize' catch here on our return..
Cheers
Dan

Beltana Springs near Brookton - Does it still exist ?
Submitted by kaney68 on Sun, 2010-01-10 13:56Was just reading an article in a 1998 edition of W'Angler about private fisheries..
The article was about 2 areas, Windermere near Williams and Beltana Springs near Brookton..
It went on to say that Beltana was stocked with Murray cod, golden perch, silver perch and rainbow trout.
Windermere stocked both rainbow and brown trout.
Does anyone know if Beltana still exists and is operational ?
Did a quick search on the net, but nothing came up..
There is a Beltana Springs winery near Brookton - wonder if it's the same place ?
It sounds a bit more promising than Golden Ponds...
cheers,
Paul

Newspaper boast could end in $75,000 fine
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2010-01-10 13:12The father and son from Verrierdale, near Noosa, caught the shark about 15km upstream from the mouth of the Noosa River on December 27.
At about 70kg and 2.8m in length, the shark is almost double the legal size limit introduced in July last year. The catch was reported in two Queensland newspapers, accompanied by a photograph of it hanging from a tree.
The son boasted to the Courier-Mail newspaper about an 80-minute struggle with the shark, saying it put up a "hell of a fight".But the story has drawn the attention of the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol, which is now investigating.
Sunshine Coast district officer Greg Bowness said that if the matter went to court, the men could face a maximum $75,000 fine.Queensland had a 1.5m limit for all sharks and rays, and people were limited to one per recreational fisherman.
"Certainly, the onus is on a person who does go fishing to ensure that they're familiar with the rules and regulations required for their practices," Mr Bowness told AAP.He said it was not unusual for bull sharks to spend a lot of time in rivers and canals in their range.
"We don't hear about it very often but I'm certainly not surprised that there is a shark like that up in the top reaches of the Noosa River," he said."It's part of its natural habitat."
Anglers have been urged to check their catch this summer, after more than 750 recreational fishing fines were handed out in 2009.Most were handed out after very basic rules were broken.
On-the-spot fines of up to $1000 apply for fishing offences, but people can also be taken to court if they blatantly flout or repeatedly break the law.- 2 comments

Already Upgrading
Submitted by Trousersnake on Sun, 2010-01-10 12:58Hey all,
Well I had to upgrade from all my plastic starter stuff from xmas today. I guess I am now fully addicted. Tha cheap plastic shit was giving me heaps of heartache. My beach rod reel was no longer interested in winding in after I cast, and tha boat rod reel, tha line had actualy burned through tha plastic causing it to get snagged on almost every cast. This morning was tha last straw when I lost my twistie that I got just yesterday from Matt T. By tha time I got tha reel snag sorted tha twistie had sunk to tha bottom and got snagged. I got a nice new 7ft rod and reel and a new reel for tha beach rod. I am gona head out for herring tonight I have some berley and a new twistie. Am I better off heading off tha rocks in Mindarie or tha beach/reef of southern quinns? Or if anyone knows of another good local spot I am happy to try it out!!
Catch ya on tha flip side
Peace

Rotto Fishing Fee's or permits.
Submitted by Bodie on Sun, 2010-01-10 09:39Was out at rotto yesterday pulling the pots which are approx 800m from the shore, had the local ranger come up to us and ask if i had a license or permit to be able to pot in rotto waters.
I responded, no i did not, as i was unaware you actually needed one, and that i only knew you needed one if you were at anchor.
He further said it was the same license or registration required to be able to use the free anchorages and the pull your boat up on the beach im tommos. He explained all fees were allocated to the 'rottnest conservation fund'.
Is this in fact true???
Now im all for fishing licenses, and all for the fee's required to moore at rotto, or anchor, as the funds are utilized on sustaining the boating facilities at rotto.
However i cant understand the reasons behind needing to spend $200 a year to be able to put my cray pots near rotto, and cant see where the funds would be used on facilities i use.
Ive had a quick look on the rottnest island website, and couldnt find much that stated i required a permit to put my pots in at rotto.
It got me thinking, what would stop any council from applying a permit like this rotto one to be able to fish from the local waters, IE: Mandurah to catch crabs in the estuary? or Cockburn to apply a fee to fish in the sound??
anyone able to clarify this?
Cheers

Rod reccomendation.
Submitted by garethgkr on Sat, 2010-01-09 22:44Hey there.
Im currently looking for a rod+reel to be used at rocky areas like North Mole. Looking for something to cast far and strong for what ever encounters. Targeting mainly tailors and occasional snapper with the rod. Kind of on a budget around $150 better if less. Recently bought a 12ft surf, pain in the butt using at North Mole... fell twice using it yesterday at North Mole.
Any recommendations?
PS: If anyone wants to sell theirs, I wouldn't mind buying it.
Thanks!

Magazine information
Submitted by fishfish on Sat, 2010-01-09 08:23Seeing as I 've got a bit of time on my hands up here in exmouth {stupid wind } I picked up the latest copy of WAFM and was shocked and very disapointed to see a glaring and misleading mistake in the Cannonball run story by Nic. The basics off it was deep deep water fishing and he goes onto say that the size and bag limits are either very poorly designed or no limit at all !!!!
Now this story was obviously written a while ago but size and bag limits still apply, granted if the correct rules are not known or are possibly changing in the future then the statement could be possibly worded differently such as " We suggest you check current regs before heading out " or something along those lines but not making a statement of uncertainty....
Have a read and see if you read it as I do, with such a strong push now for doing the right thing it seems to send a weak message...
Cheers fishfish..
Would love some advice
Submitted by rooboy111 on Sat, 2010-01-09 02:19Hi
Was just wondering if any one could give some advice on fishing down in Albany. See myself and all the guys from my family have started a tradition of a yearly fishing trip to Albany but we have never really been able to hook up anything really decent. So if any body has some advice on how to get something just a little bigger than the ok stuff around the islands that would be great.
Cheers Chris

Fresh TuNa
Submitted by Northwest on Fri, 2010-01-08 17:16Really Really gd Tuna recipe:
I hate fishy fish, but i like dhufish, pinks (all da gd stuff crumbed). And I do like canned tuna. But I hate tuna just crumbed or cooked because its about as fishy as fishy can get IMO. (if dat makes any sense)
Heres my mums recipe for making really good tuna similar to the stuff you get in the cans but fresher and really tasty and surprisingly not fishy.
(all values are aproximate)
STEP1
*take 2-3 kg of filleted and skinned tuna (we used the stripies caught on wensday but you could use others)
*1/2 cup of white wine vinegar
*1/2 cup white vinegar
*1/4 cup olive oil
*lemon pepper
Then marinate the fillets for a good 2-3 hours in the fridge (but not more as they will absorb too much vinegar)
after the fillets are marinated, take a large pot and make the same mix as the marinade (do not use the marinade make a fresh batch)
*then add a 1 cup of water (this will depend on the size pot)
*add olive oil
*salt
*lemon pepper
*3-4 bay leaves (apparently very important)
**then cook for 1/2 hour with the pot covered. (after 1/2 hour grab a taste see wt the texture is like, might need a lil more)
THE RESULT: Great texture and looks like it just came out the can
u can then make tuna salad, YUM!

Jane and I will be out in the bathtub so I think we will assess the weather and see if we can head out a bit deeper for some bottom dwellers. If not we will be after Bread and Butter Species, Squid and maybe a snorkel for blue mannas if all else fails.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa7h5-zLG0EThe "Cleaner Fish"
Submitted by bod on Fri, 2010-01-08 09:34CLEANER FISH WEAR 'UNIFORMS' TO ADVERTISE, AVOID DANGER
Like police and nurses, cleaner fish on coral reefs wear uniforms to signal their "professions"—a tactic that also helps the fish avoid being eaten by their clients, a new study says.
Several species of small reef fish are known to invite larger fish to
stop by "cleaning stations," where the cleaners groom their customers
and pick them free of parasites.
The clients swim away spic-and-span, and the cleaners get an easy meal: "a classic example" of a mutually beneficial relationship, the researchers write.
However, scientists have long wondered how bigger, fish-eating clients find cleaners and apparently recognize that the smaller fish are off the menu.
Karen Cheney and colleagues decided to test the theory that the cleaners' colors and body patterns are what set the fish apart.
Her team found that cleaner fish—such as gobies and wrasses—are more likely to sport a dark side stripe accentuated by patches of blue and yellow.
"We believe that they do exhibit a 'cleaner uniform' in order to make them conspicuous and easy to distinguish on a coral reef," Cheney, a biologist at the University of Queensland in Australia, said by email.
Cheney and colleagues observed the behavior of several species of wild fish known to visit the cleaners at a site in the Great Barrier Reef.
The team then added fake fish, which had been painted with a range of colors and patterns, to the reef.
The researchers found that fish painted with blue colors and striped body patterns enticed more clients to pull up to a cleaning station.
The team also used a well-known model for how fish see colors to examine how three types of client fish—barracuda, damselfish, and surgeonfish—were likely to respond to various hues.
Though each fish species has a different kind of visual system, for all of them blue would contrast most against the colors of coral reefs.
Yellow would best stand out against blue water backdrops and dark lateral stripes, the authors wrote.
This would make a blue-and-yellow striped fish very obvious to clients as they passed by a reef.
Though no one knows for sure, Cheney said her new study implies that the fish's cleaning behavior evolved before the uniform.
The blue-and-yellow patterns possibly became more common over time as fish flashing those colors attracted more clients.

Jurien bay lows
Submitted by just dhu it on Fri, 2010-01-08 08:00I have just been talking to a mate who has just returned from his Jurien Bay holiday and he questioned about the antics of some of the youngish locals who were bragging about how they were cleaning up day after day on jewfish and snapper and that he had to call his mates to meet him behind the island in their boats to share out his catch before returning to the ramp and not get caught by the fisho inspectors, unfortunately he couldnt get any boat or car details so i have passed on the information to the local inspectors in hope they may put the picture together and catch up with them.

Which PE (braid) line is best for jigging?
Submitted by Dasho on Fri, 2010-01-08 07:191) Which PE line is everyone using for sambo jigging this year?
-Shimano is all about 'PowerPro' both in and outside Japan. Has anyone used it yet?
-Any tried and tested PE lines you have and are using?
2) I need a fresh spool of PE for my Spheros 14000FA.
-Can I go up to 80lb so I don't keep losing jigs due to line rubbing from other fisho's on a charter?
3) Which PE line would you recommend for my Stella 4000 for inshore light jigging?
Thanks for any info,
