Sea Shepherd heading to Freo for repairs

The Sea Shepherd
flagship Steve Irwin arrives in the west Australian port of Fremantle
on Thursday with the crew of the protest trimaran Ady Gil, which sank
after a collision with a ship from the Japanese whaling fleet in the
Southern Ocean.

The Ady Gil, originally known as Earthrace and
skippered by New Zealander Pete Bethune, had been part of the Sea
Shepherd group protesting at Japanese whaling.

It sank as it was being towed back to Australia after the collision.

The
Sea Shepherd Society said the Steve Irwin would undergo emergency
repairs to its helicopter and take on more fuel and provisions before
rejoining the battle action against the Japanese whalers.

i have not used my boat for at leat 24 hrs, i noticed a white milky oil coming from a small hole near the prop. is this bad....

Just a quick post to say we did manage to get out on sunday, and fish for the whiting and skate.  I struggled and only caught a few small whiting and a strap conger eel.  My brother in law had a great day boating blonde rays of 18, 20 and 21lb!  A couple of other blonde ray were caught and some spurdog but on the whole it was a hard day...still it beats working and the weather was good.  Take care one and all.

This might sound like a stupid question to you seasoned fishers, so forgive me.........20 odd years in the desert, I need some educating.......

Hopefully in the next couple of months we are moving to WA (Northampton) and have heard they have a prawn run near Kalbarri somewhere.

Could someone please fill me in, what exactly is a prawn run, when they happen and tides  etc?

Any secret places and info would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering if anyone can give some advice on cheap sounders, between 200 and $500, prefer colour but realise we prob won't get it for that price.  Also looking at second hand ones so will be keeping the eye's open.  Has anyone purchased one recently between that price range that they are happy with, would also be great if you had a photo of it in action so I can show the boss as its for our work boat.

Can anyone help me ID the larger crab?

i know that most of perth metro is protected by marmion marine reserve which prohibits net fishing,but when i fish at marinas eg ocean reef and hillarys i see people using them and they were getting bulk mullet,whiting and herring every cast. and when i ask they say its not illegal if you are in a marina beacuse its not classed as part of the marine park. is this true   or are they illegally fishing?????

Our house got broken into while we were away on Xmas holidays, and the Mongrels took two of my favourite reels. So if anyone hears of a Saltiga Dogfight or a Stella 4000FD going for a unbelievably cheap price can you let me know. Thanks alot.

I have a battery that has gone flat, we had a jump start and it went fine. Then turned off the motor after about 10 mins, then tried to start agian and nothing., the trim works and all the lights work. Am i best going and getting the battery checked, not sure how old the battery is? Motor worked fine after a jump start so guessing it's the battery.

Overfishing by trawlers of the south eastern Australian Blobfish is threatening to make it extinct.

The bloated bottom dweller, which can grow up to 12 inches, lives at depths of up to 800m, so it rarely seen by humans.

In deep trouble: The blobfish is threatened with extinction owing to deep-sea trawling

However with increased fishing, the fish is being dragged up with other catches.

Despite
being unedible itself, the blobfish lives at the same depths as other
more appetising ocean organisms, including crab and lobster.

Deep-sea expert Professor Callum Roberts, from University of York, said the blobfish had plenty to be miserable about.  

Prof
Roberts, author The Unnatural History of the Sea, said: 'Blobfish are
very vulnerable to being dragged up in these nets and from what we know
this fish is only restricted to these waters.

'The
Australian and New Zealand deep-trawling fishing fleets are some of the
most active in the world so if you are a blobfish then it is not a good
place to be.  

'There
are some deep-water protected areas around sea mounts in the Southern
Ocean but that is only really to protect coral and not the blobfish.

'We've
been overfishing areas up to about 200m deep and now we have moved off
those continental shelves and into the deep sea in areas a couple of
thousand metres deep.

'In 2006 conservationists came very close to achieving a global moratorium on restricting bottom trawling on the high seas.

'They
came within a whisker of that but Iceland rejected it so the United
Nations was charged with protecting the deep sea species.

'If
you add together all the area of the deep sea that has actually been
looked at, then it is an area about the size of Paris - [the rest] is a
really unexplored area, but we could be destroying it.'

Used surf poppers for the first time on the weekend, we went down to binningup camping with the MRS and Kids .managed to squeeze in some fishing ,i put on my new surf popper and 4 gang mulie rig and sent it out .i was only fishing for about an hour on sunset and ended up with 6 40cm tailor.3 of them were taken on the popper which i thought was a great result, it felt like they chased it and hit it a bit harder which was fun.

I only heard of these poppers on this site so thanks to the guys who have been discussing them ,i think i've found my favourite Tailor rig

Wondering if anyone has been out with them and what I can expect for a 3 day charter in March. What sort of fishing do they usually do, is it all bottom bashing?, what depth of water is fished, etc etc... starting to prepare gear now! Might have to contact them and ask a few questions but thought I'd see if anyone has had the experience themselves.

If anyone is heading up around yanchep soon, just watch out for the rays. i counted 8 different rays this morning just north of the lagoon, all within 10 metres of the beach. i jagged a small one with a 30g Twisty on my flicky and it took off. the lure ripped out of the wing when i put some pressure on it. talking to the lady at the kiosk, the numbers have been increasing every day.

looking for a good web desighner at a good price does ne one know of any ??? cheers brenz

The comment from the Masterchef finalist, who will be seen next month in her own cooking show on ABC-TV, came as chefs, politicians and celebrities argued that our national dish was everything from a sausage in bread to pavlova.

Masterchef judge Matt Preston didn’t nominate a dish but said a barbecue  was “how we express our Australianness”.

“Friends from a range of cultures can get together around the same flame and share their cultural heritage.”

While Poh acknowledged that a barbecue was “the perfect reflection of our climate and very laid back way of life”, she said salt and pepper squid had been adopted with “zeal” in restaurants and cafes.

“It’s
a classic example of Australian’s eating lighter and with Asian
flavours filtering into mainstream dining. Served with a salad, it’s
become a more diminutive replacement for fish and chips and a meal that
is perfect for al fresco dining or being by the beach, which is also
very Aussie.”

A recent Galaxy poll in News Limited papers
revealed that 37 per cent of people believed a meat pie was our
national dish, followed by roast lamb with 28 per cent.



It’s a result that the former TV chef and director of the Tasting Australia festival Ian Parmenter found hard to stomach.



He said that while many people claimed the meat pie was our national dish, “I grew up on them in the UK”.

“If you were to take a beef pie overseas and use it to represent your nation, people would probably laugh,” he said.



“As
someone who's come here from the United Kingdom, pavlova and lamingtons
are the two things that hit me as being uniquely from here.



“But in terms of a dish that says ‘We are Australian’ I don't think we have one.”



Chef and author Maggie Beer said roast lamb was no longer a dish suitable to our climate and lifestyle.



“I would have a roast leg of lamb once every two years,” she said. “That’s our English heritage that would bring that forward.”



She
said each state or region should have its own signature dish. “I think
here in South Australia it should be a beautiful salad of blue swimmer
crab. Something that is peculiar to us.”



The Treasurer Wayne Swan also nominated a dish that was close to home.



“In Queensland you can't go past some seafood on the barbie and a XXXX to quench the thirst,” he said.



“It's
a reflection of our outdoors lifestyle, gathering with family and
friends and enjoying the warm weather and the ready availability of
fresh fish, prawns and oysters. But I have noticed that the salad on
the side is now a bit more sophisticated than it used to be. The old
iceberg lettuce struggles to get a look in these days.”



Masterchef
celebrity winner, swimmer Eamon Sullivan, wants to promote the pavlova
to prevent it being overtaken by some culinary imports.



“I think
the English national dish is something like Butter Chicken (Indian) or something
so hopefully it doesn’t get to that. I think maybe it is time for a
Pavlova revival.”



Fellow swimmer and dual Olympic gold medallist Grant Hackett opts for the food of his childhood.



“It
would be a sausage in a piece of bread with tomato sauce,” he said.
“Growing up these were a favourite in our household. Later on I’d
always have them at the surf club. I’m constantly being told off for
picking food off the barbecue.”



Comedian and radio personality Dave O’Neil was another fan of the snag in bread.



“It's a hand held dish that goes with the active Aussie image,” he said.



“It
was probably introduced for convict gangs, so they could eat and keep
working. It's now the natural addition to any occasion, be it a fete,
ceremony or funeral.



“The sausage in bread is an Aussie icon like the esky or the beer stubbie. If we didn't invent it, we certainly own it now. ”

Recently a good mate was kind enough to show me the light – or sparkle in this case. Have been testing these pretty trinkets on Herring and Tailor, surprisingly, with great success.

With the price of some of the hardbody lures ATM, I reckon these are a cost efficient alternative and work equally as well, if not better than a lot on the market. And coz of the weight of the glass beads, they cast an absolute treat.

Going to put some together for the Mackies and other pelagics up North for the comp, can’t see why they wouldn’t work for them either, especially on all the girl fish.... lol

In the mean time .... stringing up some nice big sparkly ones and hanging out for Salmon season .....

Looking at doing a long weekend down that way with the missus in the next couple weeks.

Just wondering what acoomodation is like (caravan parks) and the local shore based fishing. Wouldnt mind getting into a few KG's, flattys skippy, herring etc.

Not been down that way since i was 14 so looking forward to it!!

Hi Guys took the boat out yesterday and today found a pool of thin green oil underneath the prop on the ground did have a good play with the trim and trim tabs yesterday in the rough seas for the first time, have I blown the seals on the hydraulics or is there nothing to worry about after giving the hydraulics a work out?? the motor is a 140 4 stroke Johnson 5 years old with 180 hours

Question,

I just towed my boat 240kms and 1 wheel lost 3 axle buddies throughout the trip.

The bearings are new and I didnt over fill the buddies with grease but this wheel kept on throwing them off.

I have been told to put loctite on it or change out the bearing but as I have told them that its a new bearing and is in good nick .

Has anybody else had the same problem and if so what was the answer ?

I havent been beach fishing in a long long time,, and i was just wondering if theres any recommendations for any good spots in the metro area and even up near yanchep, two rocks etc. i am mainly targeting  tailor.. so if theres any good spots that you recommend could u please let me know.. im planning on going on aussie day..:)
