Exmouth FishWrecked Fishing Comp 2009 May the 2nd & 3rd
With only 12 more weekends before we all hit the exmouth waters, thought we should get an uptodate list going and maybe some new members would like to sign up. It is going to be a great time with around 57 members already .
To be decided on the prizes and line class, there will be a gamefish section, bottom bounce section and landbased section, which will have smaller subsections. Its $10 per person entry for Saturday and Sunday and theres a prize pool of $500 so far and a large blown up photo of a coral trout under the Exxy Navy pier donated by Gully link to view pics : http://fishwrecked.com/node/18749. So including the entry fee $ tally, probably another $500 to go into the kitty without any sponsors or anything else included.
Any one with any sponsorship or know any one that would like to sponsor a trophy or donate a prize please contact Adam via pm
Please update this list if your plans have changed, still able to come or unfortunately not able to make it.

Circle Hooks
Submitted by WODF on Sat, 2009-02-07 23:14Anyone using these? The latest Mullas we've been catching tend swallow the bait and the hook right down, end up having to re-rig so want to give circles a go as i've heard many benifits. Which brand make the best? Will also be giving them a go on some Snapper and other bottom feeders.

Mulloway East of Esperance
Submitted by Bluetonic on Sat, 2009-02-07 20:55Well I tried to book into Jurien for Easter, but because I left it too late,... missed out on accommodation.
Have been talking to damo6230 and we have decided on a 4WD trek to 'East of Esperance' to hunt Mulloway. Roll out the swags and spend 2 days solid fishing with a days drive there and a days drive home from Bunbury.
Are there any other members interested in joining us? We are still in the early process of working out the details and if any other members have some well worth while tips/knowledge of the area...? then we would love to hear from you.
Do we go to Israelite bay? or are there better spots to target Big Mulloway from the beaches down this way?

fishing or diving tomorrow
Submitted by Paul G on Sat, 2009-02-07 14:01So is anyone fishing or diving tommorrow ,the wind is up for most of the morning but is droping near lunch. Im heading out for a dive around 9:30-10:00 .Jesse dived 15m the other day he is doing great, looped his first cray but was undersize. Not seen many fish in close ,plenty of pickers but no good size stuff, not even many crays, and the ones we did see were right back in the reef. maybe tomorrow will be better. looks like the weather is not going to be the best for the comp next week ,but it is still early things can change. well good luck to those going out look forward to the reports..

Submitted by Snort on Sat, 2009-02-07 11:17Hi Guys,
I'm constantly looking for good info on fishing rigs for certain fish types etc which include recommended rod/reel/line/leader/rig setup etc...
Is there any chance of making a forum so we can discuss each fish type and what people prefer to use?

GT Popping advise & help
Submitted by Craig J on Fri, 2009-02-06 17:41Heading to Exmouth on 16th Feb and would like to target GT's and Queen fish. I currently have a Spheros 12000 reel, I need to match this to a rod suitable for GT's.....looking at a 8ft live fibre rod, as the pricing appears reasonable. Can anybody give me any advise on style of rod, or should I be looking at other types etc. Will be casting from a boat, so is size a consideration?
Is it better to use braid or mono on the reel.....if so, what kg rating? What's the best style and type of poppers?
Any other advise or assistance will be a great help.
Thanks

Marron Season ends this Sunday (8th Feb)
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2009-02-06 12:44Marron Season ends this Sunday (at Midday)
Marron fishers are expected to be out at popular fishing spots this weekend, as the 2009 Marron Season draws to a close at Noon on Sunday (8 February 2009).
Department of Fisheries Principal Management Officer Nathan Harrison said thousands of people had headed down to South West irrigation dams and rivers this season to fish for marron.
“The experience of camping out around karri-lined rivers or tranquil dams to fish for marron is highly valued by many Western Australians, but, to protect this wild fishery, which is unique to our State, there are strict controls, including a limited season of three weeks,” Mr Harrison said.
“The number of marron licences were well up this year, with over 9,000 people taking out a licence. This is in addition to the 14,000 people taking out umbrella licences. Last year around 7000 licences were issued.
Mr Harrison said Fisheries and Marine Officers in the South West had found the majority of recreational marron fishers they came across had followed the rules, however, there had been some people who had not done the right thing.
“Fishers using scoop nets at Wellington Dam, which like all major public dams is a snare-only area, had been issued with infringements,” he said. “Those found with undersize catch were also fined.
“Our officers also noted there were fewer fishers than normal along the southern rivers, including the Warren, Gardiner, Shannon and Deep. However, the catches in those locations appeared to be slightly up in both numbers and size.”
Mr Harrison said anecdotal information from the Blackwood River indicated the usual number of fishers had taken the opportunity there of enjoying the experience of marron fishing and some good size marron were caught, although, the number of legal size marron was low.
“Fisheries and Marine officers issued two infringements for using illegal traps in the Blackwood and the Margaret Rivers,” he said. “The traps used can legally be sold by tackle stores, but they cannot be used for marron fishing.
“Recreational marron fishers should be aware that, because the traps are illegal for marron fishing, the equipment can be seized by our officers. Not only will they be out of pocket for their purchase they will also face a hefty fine for using them.”
Mr Harrison said there would be a review of the 2009 season, following post-season research sampling in key dams and rivers. This information will be used to identify any sustainability issues before the dates of next season are decided.

salmon
Submitted by Hansie on Fri, 2009-02-06 10:57Anyone got some news on the salmon run?
I live in Dunsborough and have heard of a few smallies being caught locally, but how far south do i need to go to get amongst them proper-style?
i have a dinghy for augusta or windy harbour or whatever or can just beach it up from Yeagerup to Kilcarnup.
i much prefer catching salmon to floating around trying to find them so I'll drive as far as is necessary to get the best chance of some serious salmon action
any southerners got some advice for me please?

What would everyone like to see in a fishing magazine
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-02-05 07:11There was some really good responses to Adam's post about fishing magazines and I thought I would take it a step further to see just what people would prefer to see in a fishing publication.
a) Would you like to see more detailed reports of fishing activities, ie, where and when the people fished the particular location they are writing about - including their preferred tide and wind conditions. What tackle, bait, lures, knotts etc. they used.
b) Tackle tests - where similar products are reviewed after being tested in proper fishing conditions - not necessarily with the latest equipment from the factory.
c) New product reviews.
d) Helpful hints - where experienced anglers pass on little tips such as what rigs they use for certain fish or conditions, how people store their tackle, how to make a lure, how to maintain a reel, rod or boat, etc.
e) Fishing adventure stories.
If you have other ideas, please add them to the list,
All the best, Colin Hay

Poem for my Valentine
Submitted by Stoinka on Wed, 2009-02-04 16:251. My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you has screwed up my life. 2. My love, you take my breath away. What have you stepped in to smell this way? 3. Kind, intelligent, loving and hot; This describes everything you are not.
2. I see your face when I am dreaming.
That's why I always wake up screaming.
4. Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss,
But I only slept with you 'cause I was pissed.
5. I thought that I could love no other
-- that is until I met your brother.
6. Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's
empty and so is your head.
7. I want to feel your sweet embrace;
But don't take that paper bag off your face.
8. I love your smile, your face, and your eyes
Damn, I'm good at telling lies!
10. My feelings for you no words can tell,
Except for maybe 'Go to hell.'
11. What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime.
WHO SAID POETRY IS BORING?

Heads Up - Rod Holders
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Wed, 2009-02-04 15:19Just to let everyone know that the police are targeting rod holdes on the fromt of vehicles.
I was stopped today by a MB cop (who went around the block to get me!) for having a rod holder attached to the Bullbar on the front of my 4WD.
He told me it was ilegal, as was my holder for my CB arial. They protruded past the bullbar (maybe 2 cm) and therfore $100 fine appplies on the spot. I had to remove them there and then .
I asked about transporting 12ft fixed rods (Which is why I use them) and he told me no, They can only be used on the beach to hold the rods. Using them to transport or having any part on the holder sticking out past the vehicle is ilegal , therefore the rod itself would be ilegal since the butt of the rod would stick out even further.
I have heard this discussion on a number of occasions with conflictng views and comments. Perhaps someone from Fishwest or a lawyer who fishes (Do they fish or are they the bottom feeders themselves?!!), can confirm the law for allshore based anglers so it's put to rest once and for all
Thoughts anyone??

Live Bait
Submitted by tommytomato on Wed, 2009-02-04 09:01How do you guys set up your live bait ?
I have trouble keeping bait live when using two hooks like the image I uploaded.
whats the best way to hook them up, I was hooking them up via the nose area, which seem to work very well a couple of nights ago, Tailor seem to get loose when hooking up via the nose, is it best to hook up along the back bone area ?
Any tips on the subject would be great

Fishing Mags - The Good, Bad and the Ugly
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2009-02-04 09:01Hey Crew,
Just wanted to get some feedback from you guys about the current environment re - fishing mags. What do you guys think they are doing well at the moment? Where are they failing and faltering? We all know each publication has its own unique features going for it, but what is it that makes you go back to keep buying it? The quality of the photos, the stories, the articles, the amount of ads, repetition of articles? Other factors?
Cheers,

Palm Beach Jetty
Submitted by tommytomato on Wed, 2009-02-04 07:58The City of Rockingham is porposing to undertake reconstruction of the
Palm Beach jetty early in 2009.
The design for the new Jetty incorporates improved recreational fishing & swimming facilities including a universal access low level ramp.
Palm Beach Jetty Dimensions
Length - 125m
Jetty Approach Width - 3.3m
Jetty Head Width -6.5m
A component of the redevelopment is Council's recognition of the Z Force Memorial included in the Palm Beach Foreshore Landscaping
TT ( karl )
It will be good to see the jetty come back, all those guys who used to fish there were up in arms about it been pulled down, it was becoming un safe to even be on the old Jetty.Looks like we will have a nice new one is place very soon
